Beyond

And in a swirling vortex of black cloth, the mask was gone, and they were alone. Silence crept for a while, as the four damned rose from the ground, at last able to investigate their surroundings. The first thing they noted was that they were naked and unarmed. The second thing, is that everything around them was dead. The place actually looked like a cross between a graveyard and a ruined town center. Tombstones and crumbling crypts littered the area, and many destroyed buildings could be seen in the background. Looking up, they could see the place was actually a pit, with black stone walls far away, and a gray sky with black clouds above. Then they saw the walls were cut with jagged stairways. It should be the layer thing the mask was talking about. The wall seemed to be a few hundreds yards away, but it was not that much of a run. So much for the first layer.
And then they noticed they were not alone. Bones and corpses were spread all around the ground, a few of them were not even dead, just agonizing and moaning. But in the shadows, not far away, four...things were moving. They were sniffing the air and drooling. They seemed vaguely human, but the look in their eyes was not invinting at all. A quick look to the sides located a few weapons close by, and a pile of VERY old and worn-looking cloth armour could be seen. Well, better than nothing, uh?
Hunters and Prey
Tier 1: The Graveyard
First Layer: The Rotten Pit - Field of Awakening.
Objectives: Eliminate all enemies.
Challenge: Gotta Catch 'em All! - Take all weapons and all armour, Loot all corpses and do something about all agonizing soldiers. It matters not if you help them or harm them for this Challenge, you just need to get them out of the battlefield.

There was no other way to describe how Rindell Connors felt besides 'like shit.' Even that happened to be an understatement in this case. How else was a dead person supposed to feel? Was he even feeling at all? The smiling mask had lent them bodies, so surely they could feel. A lent body. Rindell stood there in a stupor after the mysterious figure had departed. Shy and quiet he had been in the realm of the living, he couldn't help but feel embarrassed as he gazed upon his own nude body. Knowing that others could see him, he shivered. He had nothing to be ashamed of by any means, but it was still unsettling. He kept his icy blue eyes upon himself in fear that they might wander upon the naked forms of the others. Limbo. This was wear he found himself. With a borrowed body. No clothes. And a withering soul in dire need of ascension. If the vivid memories of his death had not been present, he'd think he were in some strange sort of nightmare.
But this was no dream. The moaning and wailing was too real. Something was approaching. Looking up, Rindell saw humanoid shapes in the distance. Disgusting. Would he look like them eventually? Would he lose his mind--lose his soul? There was much to fight for now. Standing about were the sources of the agonized sounds--other souls who seemed to be distraught, very unlike the bloodthirsty ones across the way. Was there reward to help these beings? Of course, maybe they knew something about this realm. Could they even communicate? "..." Rindell remained silent. What was there even to say? His social skills weren't the best at all, and being dead was not aiding in that at all.
Rindell starts at J4.
There were some odd items about, one particularly close that caught his eye. A book. The monsters across the way were still rather far. Could he reach it in time? At least he could cover his manhood with it until he could find something to put on. He was used to being elaborately dressed, but he'd settle for anything this time to prevent from feeling more shame than he already did. And so the plan was set. The first step in this crazy Limbo world was to find something to wear. The creatures quickly approaching could wait, and perhaps one of the others could help out the agonizing beings before them. She had awoken with a start, gasping and worried and utterly distressed. She hated the iron grip the darkness had on her lungs and to escape it was sweet, but to end up like this? In her mind this was worse than drowning in the thick air, choking on what should have been giving her life, dying without ever feeling that final release. To be dead, to be left in this state, she almost would have preferred to continue inhaling agony. Almost. She supposed that their situation could have been worse. They could have just been cast down to Hell and judged with the highest punishments–they could have been forced to endure torture forever. At least with this they had a chance.
Still, Tara would have preferred to not be gracing the others with her appearance au natural. Never one to be ashamed of her body, but also never one to shamelessly show herself off, she covered what little she could with her arms. "Quite a predicament..." she breathed quietly, doing her best to keep her eyes locked on faces rather than the nudeness. She found the only male's eyes drifting to their surroundings, and though she wished not to, she followed his gaze. The creatures and other 'human' souls here failed to spark anything in her other than loathing for their situation. Would they in turn end up like that? She hoped to Eden not.
And then her eyes settled on a pile of... rags? Well, it wasn't the best of clothing, but it would help her feel better if she had it. And then there was the sword none too far off from her. Her objectives quickly became clear. "Right then: clothing, sword, then figure out if I can do anything about... those..."

She was well aware of her current surroundings, and she didn't like them one bit. This rotting shithole of a world cannot sustain me. Kazu thought, her very bones hissing as if touched by acid. Kazu felt the skin on her arm. It was burning hot, as if it had been dipped in boiling water for a few seconds. Good, she was still in touch with her magic, though she needed some sort of catalyst to bring about her true powers.
She ignored her nakedness, her violet eyes scanning over the area, in search of something she could use as a medium for power. There were others around her who were also naked. She immediately did not trust them. Such was the way of a witch, trust no one who was not a heathen herself.

Death was an unpleasant feeling, slightly painful and agonizing even. However Krobelus had experienced far worse. Pushing herself up to a standing position Krobelus glanced around her to take in her surroundings. There were a few who were in the same situation as her, the mask did say that they were supposed to act as a group. Noticing that they were all bare Krobelus looked down at her own body and her eyes almost popped out of their sockets. Her body was nude and exposed, but that was not the reason for her shock. Rather, her skin was pale white and absent of the abnormalities of her living vessel. Had death severed their connection?
Her question was answered almost immediately. Krobelus felt an excruciating pain searing through her body. She fell to her hands and knees, spots of light blue appearing on her fair, pale white skin. They were small and only a few had appeared, but they began to slowly spread across the woman's body like some kind of plague. As the discoloration made its way across her skin it changed first to a darker shade of blue and then continued to darken until it reached a purple color. In mere seconds her entire body had changed color, however it seemed her transformation had stopped there.
Krobelus stood back up, the pain receding as she looked over her body again. Of course death wouldn't have been enough, she was a part of the nether realms and it a part of her now. She fixed her eyes on the aberrations that blocked their path, there was no way they would stop her. She had given her body to the nether realms and foresaw a future in ruins, and she would live to witness this future with her own eyes even if it meant throwing the rest of her body to the nether.

Knowing she would have to uncover herself to effectively get over to the rags, Tara made a mad dash for the pile without a second thought as to whether or not anyone was staring at her. It only took her a couple moments to reach the pile, which she immediately plucked the most together rag and set about covering herself. Executing his plan, Rindell dashed off to the side and nabbed the book hurriedly. It didn't seem to be in the best of shape, but that didn't matter in the least bit. He used the book to cover his groin, effectively shielding his genitals from the view of the others...at least for now. He turned to see what they were up to--if they were trying to find ways of covering themselves as well. He noticed one of the ladies had already garbed herself in some rags. There still looked like there were a lot left. Should he go ahead and procure some as clothing? It was rather inconvenient having to keep a book in front of him, not to mention his butt was still in perfect view of anyone who deigned catch a glimpse of it. "..." There was no doubt that he'd have to reach that pile. He kept his eyes focused upon it such that they would not wander. The other women would most likely feel flustered if they were ogled at--he knew he would be. But it seemed like everyone was otherwise distracted--lost in thought or making mad dashes for makeshift clothes. Covering himself probably wasn't necessary but it definitely made himself feel more comfortable.

Sighing so quietly that the nonexistent breeze could quash the sound, Rindell kept his next step in his plan of action in mind. There were still a lot to deal with. The people playing this game at a second chance. The wailing souls. The bloodthirsty ones getting steadily closer. This...wasn't what he was used to. Back in the realm of the living, he wasn't much for video games, and he knew this was pretty similar to the subject matter that some were based upon. It made him regret not delving into the gaming world now; perhaps he'd have a clue as to what to do. For now he would keep grasping at straws, perhaps following in the shadows of the others--observing what they do, but not too closely. Glancing away from the pile of rags, Rindell rolled his eyes to himself and blushed a bit. This ordeal would not stop being awkward until everyone was clothed.

Kazu casually walked forward, ignoring the suffering soul she passed. It's safety was not her concern, and it would be foolish to think she would do anything for it. The nether realm threatened the very stability of her body, she could not waste any time or effort on meaningless tasks like saving someone already dead. Kazu's eyes were locked onto the stick protruding from the ground instead. She grabbed it and gave it a yank, pulling the thing out of the ground and the surrounding rubble. It wasn't even close to a replacement for a scepter, but it would have to do.

"I can feel my power growing again," Kazu murmured almost silently, her eyes widening as she felt the power of the nether realm coursing through her body. As she held her new weapon, two purple shadows leaked out of the pores of her skin, circling the length of her staff. The nether realm has gifted her use of her power. Good, good. This was all going well.
Kazu's gaze turned to the helpless soul next to her. It wouldn't even take any magic to finish this one off. A thought crossed her mind, the death creature from before said she could rip souls out of others if she so desired. and with her current state, she desired nothing more than to gain more power. "If this is a survival game, then I guess you're losing, and I'm winning," Kazu said darkly, smirking at the helpless man beneath her.

Krobelus moves to cell H-2
Taking another look around her Krobelus noticed a pile or rags and a mace lying around. She could cover herself with those rags later, it wasn't like she minded the fact that her body was exposed. The first thing to do however, was to arm herself. Making her way over to the mace she picked up the old rusted weapon and picked it up. It wasn't in the best of conditions but it was at least something. Not to mention that the weapon was rarely used anyway, but it was nice to have in case one of the aberrations came too close to her.

The time has finally come. The crooked staff in her hand was now filled with magic from Kazu's connection to the nether realm. Her body cooled down ever so slightly from the release of her horrible aura. The mage beneath her was obviously still connected to a realm not anything like the nether. It disgusted Kazu to see such a thing. She raised her staff in the air, collecting dark energy particles from her surroundings. A small orb of shadow formed at the very tip of the staff.
"You're beyond help," Kazu whispered almost silently, her purple eyes tinted with evil. She held back a cough, her form in this world was not quite as strong as she was used to. Of course, her old form was much more corrupt. Even her regular magic attacks seemed to have weakened. "Now, give me your soul!" With that, the orb fell, exploding on the helpless mage and destroying his form.

Successfully clothed and efficiently covered from currently unpresent ogling eyes, Tara shifted from foot to foot uncomfortably still. Even now that she was clothed, she could not help but feel vulnerable–a feeling she loathed with all of her being. Her eyes darted over to the shabby sword she had taken note of before; she couldn't reach the damn thing now, and it'd take a little while longer before she could. Not to mention there was a disgusting creature lingering nearby: it would likely be able to attack her fairly soon and without a sword she lacked a way to really fight back. She wasn't like those damn monks back home that fought hand-to-hand.

"Hmph. Guess I better get the lead out." she finally muttered dejectedly, making a mad dash towards the weapon. However, as she ran she noticed a rather disgusting corpse right near her foot. She paused, not liking the dismembered look of the body one bit. She should have kept going, but there was something on it... she couldn't tell what. Reluctantly, she leaned down and tried to pry it free–if she couldn't get the sword, maybe she could get a hand on this... it'd be better than doing nothing.

Drawing ever nearer to the pile of clothes, Rindell made his way in an attempt to close himself. He noticed that he was near another one of his naked companions and kept his eyes focused on the ground. Attempts to make conversation with her would most likely fail tremendously and grow immensely awkward. As such, he remained intent to reach his goal of getting some rags of his own to cover himself with. He really just needed enough to cover his crotch and butt. He'd be fine otherwise. The blush upon his cheeks intensified. Never in his wildest dreams had he ever thought this would be a problem he'd be having. Then again, never had he dreamt he'd die and get a second chance of life either, and yet here he was.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed one of the other women preying on the weakened souls in need of aid--the mask had told them that they could do that. "But it would leave a stain..." Rindell muttered to himself quietly and shivered at the thought. It made him think about karma and retribution, how every negative action would build up and come back around like a boomerang to knock the aggressor senseless. That one girl might be fine with having that sort of sword hovering over her head, but Rindell wouldn't be taking any chances like that unless he absolutely had to.

Krobelus moves to cell I-2
The aberrations were moving toward the group, and one of them seemed to be targeting her specifically. In fact, each one of them seemed to have a focus on a different person. They don't seem to be too smart, so perhaps they won't be mentally capable of going after one person all at once. They were definitely faster than her, so should she be pursued by even two of them it would be impossible for her to survive for long.
Aside from those things that were obviously trying to eat them, Krobelus fixed her attention on the pile of rags. Though she didn't mind having her body exposed even just a layer of cloth between her body and the claws of those things would be helpful.

Kazu approaches the mage donned in wide hat and worn robes and doesn't even give him a second look, bursting shadow energy through his chest. She saw a surge of bluish energy leave the executed mage and enter her, and she immediately felt renewed, like she was back into her old living self. Merely a second later, however, a piercing pain ran across her chest, like her heart had stopped beating for a moment. The pain was over quickly, but left an unpleasant taste in her mouth.
Tara saw a dismembered corpse and decided to investigate it. The thing was so torn and scattered that it was hard to even call it a single corpse. When she ducked to touch it, the body dispersed into a small swarm of floating tiny orbs, like fireflies. The things went right into her chest and disapeared. She felt somewhat energized.
Rindell and Krobellus shifted their position a bit, but didn't run into anything. The gaze of the humanoid beasts on their bodies was highly unsettling.
Kazu gains 1 Soul Level.
Kazu is now Incarnated!

Kazu clutched her chest, gasping for air as the stabbing pain hit her heart. Her eyes rolled upward and she shivered with delight, her gasp becoming a moan of pleasure as the pain rolled through the rest of her body and slowly disappeared. She could do without the acidic taste in her mouth, but the rest of it was pleasure from torture. She was always the masochistic type. Anything else just made her sick to her stomach.
Now that she was back to her old self, while she was alive at least, she felt much better. The annoying headache went away rather quickly, and she could feel her own body as normal as it could be. She shivered again, finally realizing that she was naked and should probably do something about it. A single opening in her skin could unleash all the fury of the nether realm. Or not. Kazu was fairly certain she could keep the nether's power in check without skin or flesh.
Kazu noticed that one of the other girls had managed to find something to put on. Curious, and suspicious, she drew closer, drawing herself behind a nearby tombstone. There was also the issue of monsters here. One was in range, and seemed to have a scent for her. Kazu raised her staff and pointed it at the odd creature, obviously a resident of this realm, and began charging her power. Another large orb began to form at the tip of her staff, like the one before, only the energy much more condensed and hot. Kazu wouldn't be surprised if those unfortunate souls nearby could feel the heat of her magic emanating from the orb. With a quick swing, Kazu flung the orb of magic at the creature, which exploding into purple flames upon contact.

Kazu immediately shot her eyes around, looking for the person closest to the monster she attacked. The girl who had gotten covered up first seemed to be the closest of the three others here. "You there!" Kazu barked, glaring at the woman, "Find your weapon and hit that thing for me!" Kazu pointed at the creature she just hit with her energy with her staff. The creature seemed to be glowing, and purple particles were coming off of it. "My magic leaves seeds of corruption behind! Ignite them quickly or it will disappear!"

Kazu immediately shot her eyes around, looking for the person closest to the monster she attacked. The girl who had gotten covered up first seemed to be the closest of the three others here. "You there!" Kazu barked, glaring at the woman, "Find your weapon and hit that thing for me!" Kazu pointed at the creature she just hit with her energy with her staff. The creature seemed to be glowing, and purple particles were coming off of it. "My magic leaves seeds of corruption behind! Ignite them quickly or it will disappear!"

The abominations hungering for their newly gained forms drew nearer and nearer, and now people were starting to lunge into action. They wielded their weapons...and had access to amazing abilities. Were they even human? They certainly didn't come from any place Rindell originated from. The grip on his notebook tightened--the only thing covering him up. From within, he felt a strange pulse of power. He could feel it alight upon his fingertips and dance along the nerves in his arms. Was it fate that he had picked this item up over any of the others? Everyone seemed to have their designated weapon, so was this his? Feeling compelled to open the notebook, he removed it from its place near his crotch and opened it up. The thing was stained and the words within were nearly unrecognizable. Flipping through the pages, he stopped at a certain one, running a single finger across the luckily legible words.
"No." The word escaped his mouth, and a firm expression settled upon his face. He looked up from the notebook and gazed directly at the abomination nearest him. He could feel his heart racing. This would have to work. "Caught in the present, allow regrets to weigh you down. The pursuit of your dreams is over," Rindell chanted, opening his hand with the palm towards the ground. A stream of strange symbols wound its way around his arm before pouring into the soil, surging along the ground and stopping only when it finally reached the abomination. The stream leaped upwards and twirled around the target, hovering in the air for a mere moment before snapping tight, catching the ghoulish creature in its grasp.

True be it that he felt a bit drained, but at least he would live to pursue his second chance at life now...not that his life before was all that extravagant. There was something about getting this opportunity that made him not wish to waste it. Would he do anything differently if he reached the realm of the living once more? There was so much to contemplate, and yet it felt like there was hardly any time to do so. The man still felt so exposed, but knew that he'd need the book to defend himself, so for anyone who wished to gaze, they would be able to do so, but with everyone fighting for their second chance, he felt relieved and believed that was the last thing on anyone's mind.

Tara ran to the blade buried in the ground and pulled it up. The sword was worn and in terrible shape, but should be able to cut...a little.
Rindell summons words of power to rend his foe. The symbols fail to hold it into place, but they adhere to it's skin and sear her slowly. A nearby monster can be seen flinching in pain, as a consequence of Krobellus' tether.

The beasts at last reach their targets and start lashing out. Tara is safe from the attack, as she backed away for a weapon. Kazu and Rindell only see a flash as their chasers toss bandages at them, wrapping their arms. They feel an oppressing force pulling their Celiac Plexus, but Kazu is able to resist it on force of will. Rindell is not that lucky, and feels a bit of his strengh coming out and feeding the creature. He feels unprotected, like some layer of his mind was removed. In the meanwhile, the strange masked beast gazes at Krobellus from rather far away, opens his mouth and screams. To the others, it was nothing more than a loud cry, but for the Prophet, it was like a knife hacking into her mind. Fortunately, Krobelus had a very resistant will, and was able to resist with only minimal damage.

Empowered, but now slightly frightened, Rindell leaped back a few feet, trying to distance himself from the approaching ghoul. The words seemed to just peel from its body, not longer keeping it bound. At that moment he realized it apparently was not a guaranteed effect. He needed something more dependable because the ghoul was gaining on him rather quickly. Though he moved with grace, he did not move very quickly; that thing was going to catch him, and that was the last thing he wanted. Flipping through the pages once more, Rindell searched for anything else that could probably help him out of this rather terrifying predicament, and only when he found a solitary phrase of faded words on a different page did he finally come to a stop.
Rindell moves to J3.
"The pain is swift. Pray your death might be the same," Rindell chanted, though the words came out so fast, and the next thing the guy knew, his hand jerked up into the air, palm glowing. Short streams of the strange symbols from before surged out of his palm like bullets from a gun, flying through the air at high speed and embedding themselves in their intended target. A look of surprise was still plastered on Rindell's face as he gazed at his palm, the light fading but a small bit of smoke lazily drifting upwards into the air. A few scorch marks were present and he touched them gingerly. They didn't hurt. It seemed as though it was just ash. His skin was fine which was a good thing. He drew in a breath as soon as he realized he hadn't breathed since the assault began.
Oh he definitely had power. He just didn't know what to make of it at this point.

With blade in hand, dented though it may be, Tara swiftly darted over to the enemy that had attacked the mage. Wasting not a moment, the Adept Blade shifted her blade into both hands before thrusting it at the target. The blade made a surprisingly clean cut, although it certainly did not do justice to her skills. "Better than nothing, I guess..." she muttered, readying the blade once more.
