Once, there was a vast land that stretched infinitely across the dimension of Sultika, barren with crags, towering valleys, and the existence of beings who were composed of absolute Mana in its purest forms. The terrene body of the world lie nested under the horizon of the bespangled  cosmic sky, from which the progeny of these shapeless bodies were born. They were called the "First Race,"  and though they were sentient, their knowledge of existence and the world was but rudimentary, and they lived aimlessly and without purpose... for a time. To guide the adrift race, eight stars fell to the world and took physical form. Each of the stars represented an element of the world and were gifted with perfect awareness - an insight that would be passed on to the First Race.

As time passed and with more inherited knowledge, the First Race would begin to take shape themselves, becoming various aspects of the land to form lush plains, trees, and flowing streams. The land was now truly alive. The stars continued to watch over the progress of Sultika, witnessing the creation of beasts and eventually humanity. Humans were believed by the stars to be the pinnacle of the world's creation, and would be given the knowledge of the stars, just as the First Race did. With knowledge, humanity would develop and grow, learning to think and to shape societies and creations of their own. However, humans would inevitably be overcome with greed. Humanity strove to become like the stars, and sought the ability to do so by any means necessary. The humans turned on one another, bred jealousy and hatred amongst their own kind - and eventually war.

Mournful of what the world had become, the eight stars left Sultika. To this day, the story of creation is forgotten by many, regarded as a mere fairy tale. Only a few still believe in the Children of the Stars.

Winddrift City - Cat's Eye Lounge

Music: Swanky Swing Time
Spoiler:

Multi-colored lights shimmered around the room of the club, one of the more sketchier hangouts of Winddrift City. Talk of the Cat's Eye Lounge being owned by a mafia family was the common word passed around the city, and by the looks of the regular visitors, it was hard to dispute such a claim. High socialites mingled in with the shady suits on the upper floors, while the ground floor hosted the patronage of the more common residents of the city. University students, underpaid office workers, and the like would all come together and lose themselves in the music and the liquor.

Lumbering through the crowd were two individuals; one was a young woman of titian hair and jade green eyes who had an irritated look about her, and the other was a Beastman of white and red fur. Though Beastfolke were uncommon, they weren't entirely unheard of, and nobody in this day and age would bat an eye at the presence of one. The Beastman seemed to be in higher spirits than the woman, bobbing his head with the rhythm of the music as they walked.

Heritage D2b3018875"Oi, I love this song. You should dance with me, little one."
Heritage 3225c5089a"We aren't here for pleasure, Mishka. We're supposed to keep an eye out for the one that responded."
Heritage D2b3018875"So uptight, little Freya. You should loosen up a little. I bet you are good dancer. Maybe attract nice boyfriend in crowd with moves, yes?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"Ugh! What kind of girl do you think I am?"
Heritage D2b3018875"Well with that whip, people may get wrong idea. Eheheheheh."
Heritage 3225c5089a"Grr..."
Heritage D2b3018875"Relax, little one! I kid, I kid! We here on business, yes. Mishka has not forgotten."
Heritage 3225c5089a"Why did you decide to meet this person here, of all places?"
Heritage D2b3018875"What? I know bartender. Discount drinks while we wait! Is good, no?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"Uh-huh, sure. And just how did you call them here?"
Heritage D2b3018875"I followed them home one day and leave behind mysterious letter to see us. I put on letter 'free cookies' to sweeten deal. Mishka is genius."
Heritage 3225c5089a"Wow. Real foolproof. I'm sure this person is only meeting us here to set us up for cops. Just how is this person supposed to find us, anyway?"
Heritage D2b3018875"I put on letter to look for grouchy woman and handsome Beastman. Should be easy."
Heritage 3225c5089a"The extent of your lexicon is truly phenomenal. Just what's so special about this person anyway?"
Heritage D2b3018875"Patience, little Freya. All things will come in time. For now have seat with Mishka. I order us drinks while we wait. Oi, Kaya! Hit me with usual!"

The two seated down at one of the velvet booths as Mishka signaled the bartender, while Freya's eyes scrutinized the crowd to see if she could find just who Mishka had tracked down a few days prior.

The music rolled through the club that night like hedonistic incense, the bass pulsing so hard that the floor vibrated with each beat the stereo pumped out. Usually, these types of environments were home to Daniel on his time away from the dull time spent at work - however, something was different tonight. The familiar excitement that Daniel Reisa usually got from coming by the Cat's Eye Lounge was tinged with bitter nervousness and confusion. He tried to be nondescript so that he could just blend into the mass of dancing bodies, or amidst the sea of coworkers he had back at the office - this way he could avoid confusion. Try as he may, though, somebody had managed to find where lived and indicated him to meet the party here at the club tonight. With such a straightforward approach, certainly there couldn't be much amiss at first thought, but upon closer examination of the mysterious letter that was dropped in front of Daniel's doorstep, there were a multitude of things wrong with the damn thing.

As much as his mind was telling him to just ignore the correspondence, his gut propelled him through the throng of dancers and those who were well aware it was way past five. As much as he professed to others that he hated this kind of environment, this kind of place was where Daniel thrived most. Being able to lose himself and just have fun, even if for a couple of hours, was what got him up in the morning to go about his dreary life. Contrary to the colorful surroundings of Winddrift City, his life was monotonous, and nothing ever really differed, except for each night that he chose to go to the club. These goings, though a bit expensive on his wallet, were worth every dime he spent if he got to have a good time and see good women. Trying to recall who exactly it was he needed to meet here tonight, he pulled the mysterious letter that he had saved from his doorstep from his pocket, giving it a quick reread.

Grouchy woman and handsome Beastman, huh? I see plenty of grouchy women, but I think a Beastfolke would stand out pretty well... This shouldn't take long.

Stuffing the letter back in his pocket, he casually looked around the establishment to see if he could find a couple that matched the description in the letter, but wasn't really coming up with anything. Just about any booth that was filled had some sort of combination of people, be they human or otherwise. For the current moment, he started dancing with the crowd as if this were just any visit to the Cat's Eye. Letting some tension loose would do to help him break the ice when the time came. As the minutes passed, Daniel kept looking across each of the tables and across the floor to see if he could find the couple he was looking for. Eventually, he could see fur on an impressive figure. Across from him was a woman that was kind of slouched. Wow. A Beastfolke, live in person. This didn't happen everyday. This had to be the couple he was looking for.

Daniel gathered himself and started over towards the booth that the two were seated at. It took a little bit of a walk, but eventually he made it through the traffic and got to the tableside. Daniel cleared his throat and spoke over the music playing through the club. "Hi. I'm Daniel Reisa. It's not very easy to find a guy like me, but you did it." He pulled the letter from his pocket and dropped it on the table. He looked between both the woman and the beastman. "Now what do you want with me? I'm sure it wasn't just to have a good time."

Freya gave Daniel a stare for a moment before turning to Mishka, who was downing an entire bottle of vodka like nobody's business. She nudged him in the side with her elbow, almost causing him to spit up his drink.

Heritage 3225c5089a"You're the one that brought him here, Mishka. You tell him what's going on."
Heritage D2b3018875"Gah, Freya, you could have let me finish my drink first! Mhm... so you are Daniel, yes? Have a seat, there is much to tell you."
Heritage 3225c5089a"I'm Freya, by the way."
Heritage D2b3018875"Yes, and I am Mishka. Do not mind Freya here, she may look grumpy, but she is nice girl. Anyway. Daniel, you may not realize this, but you are very special person. But what makes you special is what is going to put you in danger."
Heritage 3225c5089a"Are you familiar with Duple Corp? That company that's been around Winddrift for about ten years now?"
Heritage D2b3018875"Duple Corp is a scientific research company independent from the government. They say they do research for good of the city, but is all lies. Duple Corp is full of bad men."
Heritage 3225c5089a"Their research is pretty shady; involving the likes of cybernetic weapons manufacturing to genetic experimentation - as in creating modified humans. There's a lot going on underneath the surface, but the public turns a blind eye to their activities. We suspect they are receiving funding from an outside source, we just don't know who yet. Part of that funding probably goes to tipping off the authorities."
Heritage D2b3018875"You may be wondering what this has to do with you."
Heritage 3225c5089a"There's been an increase in the number of reports lately of people who have turned up missing."
Heritage D2b3018875"Wait one second, little Freya. How does one turn up missing?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"...Because nobody knows where you are when they realize you aren't there?"
Heritage D2b3018875"So are you telling me you can appear and disappear at the same time?
Heritage 3225c5089a"No! You can't appear and disappear at the same time!"
Heritage D2b3018875"You cannot be gone from one place and show up somewhere else entirely. So when you turn up, you are not missing. And when you are missing, you do not turn up."
Heritage 3225c5089a"I... damn."
Heritage D2b3018875"What were we talking about again?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"You threw me off my train of thought here, so I forgot. Ugh, let me back-track for a second. Oh yeah. We believe these reports of missing people are related to Duple Corp, as Mishka says a majority of these people had something in common; something you share with them as well."
Heritage D2b3018875"Daniel. There is a dormant power that runs through your blood, it is something I can sense. It is this power that will make you a target for Duple Corp. Fear not, if you stick with us, we will protect you. In return, you help us expose Duple Corp to the country for who they are. What do you say, my friend?"

Daniel took a seat next to Freya as Mishka motioned. It was probably in his best interest that he didn't piss the Beastfolke off - anyone that can hold their liquor like that was a force to be reckoned with. "Don't mind if I do, I guess. Nice to meet you both..." Daniel remarked absentmindedly as the two of them began to launch into an explanation of how they had found him through his veil of nondescription. Seriously, he thought that blending in was his specialty, but these two had seemingly found him with no explanation. Maybe they could teach him how to blend in better... With some apprehension, Daniel listened to the back and forth banter between Freya and Mishka as both got him caught up to speed with his situation that he had apparently been in outside of his knowledge. They were trying to get him to believe so much bullshit. Maybe they had been drinking before he got there. Certainly that's what this was. This had to be the correct explanation.

"Look," Daniel chuckled as he started to get up, "I don't know who you were actually looking for tonight, but I can assure you that I'm not this person. Sure, Duple Corp is a privately owned company, but their actions have been to promote cheaper consumer medications - something that I agree with. They couldn't possibly be doing anything bad - and I'm not special. I'm just an average office worker that likes to have fun every now and then. I've cut myself before, I'm pretty sure that my blood is just as red as Freya's or your own." He addressed Mishka specifically as he was the one making the most strange claims. "I don't believe I need protecting, nor do I believe that Duple Corp has a scandal that bad. I'm sorry, I just don't think I'm the guy you're looking for."

Daniel finished rising from the booth, gave the two an apologetic wave, and turned to leave. Maybe I have enough time to dance for another few minutes before I need to head home. Man, those two had something going on...

Heritage 3225c5089a"'Promote cheaper medicine'? 'Average office worker'? Ugh, he couldn't be any more of a sheep."
Heritage D2b3018875"Should I go after him, Freya?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"No. I can already tell he's going to be a stubborn one. If you chase him down, he'll just keep resisting and you'll end up making a scene. Just let him go."
Heritage D2b3018875"So what should we do, then?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"This isn't a total loss. You said you know where he lives, right? We'll just have to keep a distant but watchful eye on him. Sooner or later, Duple Corp will find him, and when they do, they'll probably send their goons. We can make our move when they do, and hopefully get a lead onto what they're planning. This Daniel guy may probably be more inclined to believe us when he finds himself in actual danger. In the meantime, we just have to sit back and wait."
Heritage D2b3018875"So... Mishka can have more drinks?"
Heritage 3225c5089a"Do what you want. I'm going home. I need to meet up with Japhet tomorrow."
Heritage D2b3018875"Very well. Good night, my little devochka."
Heritage 3225c5089a"Mhm. Night."

Mishka would help himself to another round, as Freya left the crowd that reeked of overdone perfume and cologne, rolling her eyes as she passed Daniel one last time on her way out. One of the patrons on the dancefloor seemed to be either performing one of the strangest moves known to man or was having a seizure. "Aww yeah, this party's kickin'!" the young man shouted, grinding up against some random inebriated girl. He then caught sight of Daniel and stopped to wave. "Oh hey, I know you! Don't you work in Office 3E? Man, did you finish those TPS reports? Fuckin' Hamberg's on my ass again about mine. Fuck working at Glotech, am I right?"

"Hmm?" Daniel had started back on the dance floor for a couple of minutes when he heard his name being called out. Confused, he looked towards the source of the noise, finding a familiar face spasming next to a chick that was way out of his league. Ew, it was Sam. He was pretty awkward, and seeing him try to be cool at a club was kind of sad. Daniel had to give it to him, though, at least he was trying - but maybe he was trying a bit too hard. "Yup, it's me." Daniel waved back towards the spasmatic colleague at large. "Isn't that you, Sam? It's been months since I've seen you... How long has it been since you transferred?"

Daniel started over towards Sam as he was letting his stress out about his everyday life. Admittedly, most people that submitted to the pressure of everyday life working in a cube farm usually needed to let out some stress from time to time outside of the earshot of their boss. Working in a dull cell for eight hours every day can start getting to a person - that's why Daniel made it a point to make sure that his life outside of the office was as fun and criminal as he could get away with - if he didn't, he might go crazy. "Yeah, I'm still here. It took me a while, but I managed to get everything taken care of. There's only three members in my department after you were transferred."

Daniel started bobbing again to the music. "Sorry to hear that. Glotech can be a pain in the ass sometimes," Daniel reminisced, "but at least I've got a job, right? It can always be worse." He stuck his tongue out at Sam for a brief moment before returning back to having fun.

"Ha ha yeah," Sam concurred, still keeping up his erratic rhythm. "Oh yeah, did you hear about that new game they're comin' out with? What was it... uhh... oh yeah! Eternal Dream: Online! I didn't get accepted as a beta tester but the hype is so fuckin' real, man. Bro, we should totally get on that shit when it's fully released. VR-gaming is the fucking future. But yeah, if you wanna do somethin' later give me a holler on Exanet. I know all the hottest restaurants in Winddrift." Everyone who was anybody in the gaming community knew about the anticipated title that was said to "change the face of gaming forever". The company itself however, had been under fire for an incident that happened four years ago with the initial alpha build. The first playtesters were reported to have completely immersed into the game and were never able to log out - a setback the developers have claimed to have worked out as they continue to press their project forward.

Of course, there were plenty of social media coverage on Exanet, the world's most ubiquitous medium allowing anyone to connect to the internet, social networks, messengers, forum boards, and news articles with their phones and home computers. Society had never seemed so connected and yet detached at the same time. Everyone seemed to be feeding the work machine, and their self-inflicted ignorance could not afford a single care in the world. This was the pinnacle of stagnation.

"That sounds like a rather cliché cartoon plot that I've heard of before... but I think I'm just imagining things." Daniel looked around and noticed that Freya and Mishka had disappeared from the club altogether. Good... riddance? They were really strange people. "Shoemaker's been riding my ass trying to bring my 'productivity' up lately, so I'm not sure that I'll get to have much free time over the next couple of weeks, but if this game comes out this year, I'll definitely be sure to try it with you. Nothing could possibly go wrong, right?" He stuck his tongue out and looked for the time. "Wow... it's getting pretty late. I'll probably need to take you up on that dinner offer, I should be heading home. Have a good night, Sam, it was nice talking to you."

With a wave, Daniel started back the way he came, towards the exit of the club, bobbing and weaving through people that were oblivious of time's passage and just trying to let go of reality, even if just for a few minutes. He envied those guys. They got to be a part of something that wasn't dull work for a change. He never got to have such luxury. What Daniel would give to have a vacation to do absolutely nothing with. To kick back and relax and do whatever he'd like without having the consequences that came with working for such a large company as a more senior employee. Sometimes, being an adult was not all that it was hyped up to be when one was a kid...

Music: Never A Dull Moment
Spoiler:

Winddrift was never the kind of city that slept when everyone else did. There was a great number of graveyard shifts that generated enough traffic to start its own nocturnal community; there just wasn't a single moment where there wasn't a person manning a cash register or watching over a digital screen of some sort. The quietest part of town was the common residential district known as Blue Avalon, a colossal apartment complex that rivaled the height of a skyscraper. It wasn't the most ostentatious of dwellings, as it was constructed and furnished with minimal detail, only providing appliances and services to fit the needs of an average proletarian worker. Nobody seemed to admit the existence of a social stratum of castes, however many residents of Blue Avalon came to terms with the fact that they were being put in their place. At the very least, Blue Avalon sat next to Xacshire Park, one of the few strips of nature in this plugged-in city that many would visit when they wanted peace of mind.

Freya stood outside the club in the front lot, though she did not take notice of Daniel. Instead, her attention was fixed onto the sea of neon and noise of the city - wistful eyes half-lidded and her lips marginally parted as she lost herself between two realities. One was the world that stood in front of her, a town that was always on the go without a moment's rest. The everyday pedestrians came in droves and were a boring lot, almost to the point where they were colorless and faceless to her. She watched the flitting silhouettes pass her by, either exiting or entering the Cat's Eye Lounge with those that were leaving heading towards the Wrisfeld Train Station on Commute Road. When people were tired of walking from place to place and didn't want to put up with vehicular traffic, they would often purchase a ticket for the Wrisfeld Train, as Commute Road surrounded the entire city and was a simple way to get from the residential districts to the recreational districts.

The other reality was a vision of a yearning nostalgia - how Winddrift used to be before it went full-on industrial and corporate; a world she wished to be a part of again. In an instance, all the noise faded away and Freya relived the memories of her summer melancholies to the ephemeral days where she could stop and watch the leaves change when the serotinal season shifted into autumn. Perhaps if Duple Corp could be brought to an end, everything would return the way it used to be. Freya stood by her motorcycle with her helmet in hand, thinking about the encounter with Daniel. Admittedly, she wasn't surprised that he was skeptical of them, but to be as ignorant as to believe the guise concealing their ulterior purpose? Daniel didn't even seem curious as to ask what made him so special, and Freya was beginning to question that herself.

He seemed to be just like another shadow in the crowd; no different from the rest... but Mishka seemed so certain. Mishka didn't take the liberty of filling Freya in on the details of the whole situation, as he seemed to make a habit of withholding information that Freya would have been more than interested in knowing. Freya almost felt guilty about using someone who she considered as bromidic as Daniel for bait, but she held onto the notion that it was something that must be done. Reaching into her bag and peering over at her phone for the time, Freya realized she lingered around long enough and placed on her helmet. The young woman took her seat, gripped the throttle, and rode off into the starless night.

Daniel smoothly exited the Cat's Eye without a look back. As much as he wanted to stay and have some more fun, he felt some bad vibes from those strange people. A Beastfolke had approached him and called him "special". No chance of that being true. It just couldn't be. At least the woman that the large guy toted with him was quite a looker. She also didn't seem to be quite as crazy, although she seemed to share the beast man's belief that Duple Corp was hiding a conspiracy. Well, all companies had their own dirty little secrets that they keep in house, but certainly it couldn't be as bad as human experimentation. That was fodder for sci-fi movies, not real life.

Daniel shook his head as he started towards the Wrisfield train station. It was probably better for him to call it quits early so that he could get into work early in the morning. He still wasn't done with the sudden pile of inbound paperwork that had been thrown on his desk the morning before, and he'd be nagged at if it wasn't all gone by the end of tomorrow afternoon. He was hit with a sudden pang to go back in the club for just a little while longer, but he shook off the urge. That was strange. With more determination, Daniel set off towards the train station to head back to his apartment. It was probably safer to just not be out alone at night, especially considering the type of people that were unemployed and were out at that time of night. It gave him chills up his spine just thinking about it.

As he neared the ticket counter, Daniel could hear the sound of a loud, revving motorcycle. He turned towards the sound, startled, but couldn't find a source. He was so easily spooked after that strange encounter in the club. So many heebie jeebies. There was a small line in front of the ticket counter. Daniel joined the line and waited as it dwindled. Finally, he stood in front of a counter and asked for passage to the Blue Avalon complex. It wasn't much, but it was home.

The attendant nodded and printed off a ticket for one trip to Blue Avalon. Daniel's phone would buzz, depicting several notifications from Exanet. It wasn't anything extraordinary; just pictures that Sam was already posting to his social feed of his night at the lounge as well as random advertisements and a single news post reporting on a person who allegedly went missing. Despite the station's efforts to keep a clean work environment, some hooligan managed to spray paint in giant letters, the words "VERGIL'S POP FILTER" into the wall behind the arriving train. There were times when Winddrift would prove to be a strange place, and yet this strangeness would become familiar - and in turn, no longer strange.

Daniel was lead to the train where he would be taken to Blue Avalon, and among the other passengers, some of them could be recognized from Glotech. Trivial conversations could be heard about on the train, none of which would strike any particular interest.

"Man, tonight was so sick! I think tomorrow I'm gonna hit up the arcades in Yisten!"
"Hell yeah, dude! Did you hear about the new machine they're bringing in?"
"Brah, I was all over that shit when I saw the pictures on Exanet. 'Abrogation', the hypest shit to come to Starfall. I hear it's where you play as some random office worker trying to escape this scythe-wielding psycho bitch. Her name's Uqwa I think."
"I thought it was pronounced Uqwa?"
"Man who cares? I'm gonna be feeding all my quarters into that machine. Just wait and see my initials on the leaderboard."
"Ha ha, whatever, man."

~

"So did you know? Sixela's going to be at Juke's Box next week!"
"Ohmigosh, I LOVE Sixela. Her hair is so cute! I was at one of her shows last year, and it. Was. Life-changing."
"Right?! And guess what? I GOT US TICKETS. WE GET TO SEE HER LIVE."
"YOU BITCH, NO YOU DIDN'T."
"I SO TOTES DID."
"OH MY GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE WE GET TO SEE SIXELA LIVE AGAIN."

~

"So uh..."
"What's up, dude?"
"Vergil's pop filter."
"What?"
"Vergil's pop filter."
"The hell is that?"
"Damn, I was hoping you'd know. I've been seeing that phrase everywhere: tagged on walls, people posting it on Exanet forums, and I don't know what it means. It's weird, every time I ask someone what it means, they don't know either and say they heard it somewhere else. People keep talking about it, and it's driving me crazy. Nobody knows where it came from."
"Maybe it's just some stupid fad."
"I dunno man. I just feel there's a greater meaning to this and I can't take not knowing what it is."
"Yeah well, try not to lose any sleep over it."
"What if it's like a secret password to some secret hangout? I'm just gonna start saying it around town randomly and see if I get a reaction."
"That kind of stupid thinking is probably how it spread in the first place."

The train would come to a halt at Daniel's destination: Blue Avalon. Home, such as it was. The paved path was lit, allowing Daniel to easily navigate to his apartment block with ease. Block 612, just the same as Daniel had left it; equipped with the standard cot and potted plant that all the others had, as well as the necessary kitchen appliances and whatever furnishings Daniel had decorated the place with. A good view of Xacshire Park and the rest of the residential district could be seen from the windows. As soon as Daniel took a step into his abode, his phone would buzz again. This time, he had received a strange e-mail.

On the train ride home, Daniel felt his phone vibrate. Pulling it from his pocket, it just showed Exanet notifications, mainly from Sam being silly. He liked the guy, but sometimes he was just too much. Rolling his eyes, Daniel couldn't really keep his thoughts away from how bad work was going to be for the next couple of weeks. There had been a steady increase of workflow over the past few weeks, but it had been getting worse with the past few days. He was worried that he couldn't keep up with what his boss wanted him to do, and with only two other people in his department, it was pretty much expected to put in some unpaid overtime in order to even come close to finishing everything for a given week. It really made time spent at places like the Cat's Eye something to look forward to. It was a shame that this time was interrupted by some creepy guy who thought that he was "special". Yeah right.

There was some idle chatter as the train took him home, but there wasn't really anything that interesting to take note of. Eventually, the train finally arrived at its intended destination, and he filed out of the car with the rest of the passengers. Some people were flowing straight towards the front of the complex, while others were going towards Xacshire Park. He thought of going to the park briefly, but it really was late. As he was thinking of breaking suit and going towards the nature, his phone buzzed again. Frowning, he looked at his phone to see what else Sam was up to. This time, it was an email though, from an unknown address. Those didn't really happen often. "Keep your eyes open." The email was literally two sentences. Daniel's frown got deeper as he deleted the email. He thought that he had kept his address hidden, but apparently not well enough. Hopefully his phone didn't catch a virus or something.

In a nondescript manner, all thoughts of visiting nature left his head, and Daniel retreated with the rest of the crowd that was filtering into the complex and moved towards his identical living space to get a good night's rest. Lord knew that he would need it.

Spoiler:

Morning. The sun's marigold rays bled through the blinds into the apartment. Other residents of the complex were already up and about, judging from the sound of footsteps overhead. If it wasn't the sun that woke Daniel up, chances are it was going to be the trampling session of the tenants on the upper floor. To add to the average worker's experience in Blue Avalon, the fact that Daniel's refrigerator was empty happened to be the icing on the proverbial cake. Someone had forgotten to stock the cupboards with Winddrift FDA approved boxes of cereal - and by which, it should be obvious that sole tenant of Daniel's apartment block was none other than the young man that signed the lease. Getting caught up in work apparently causes one to forget to feed themselves.

Outside into the corridor was one of Daniel's neighbors; a wiry kind of woman only slightly older than Daniel was, though not quite reaching that thirty mark by a few years. Her jet-black hair glinted in the light like a violet corundum, with her long pigtails billowing about in the morning breeze along with her fur trimmed coat. With a cigarette in her mouth, she turns down to face her tabby cat which is pacing about through her door.

"Come on, Kiwi. Do you want out, or do you want to stay inside? You do this every morning," she grumbled. Kiwi meowed playfully before going back inside, brushing himself against her leg along the way. The woman shut the door behind her after the mischievous cat made up his mind, and her magenta eyes shifted over to Daniel. "Oh hey, what's up," she greeted, blowing a puff of smoke through her teeth. In case Daniel had any intention to not make himself sound like a complete jackass, he would do well to remember that the woman's name was "Mia".

Light began to filter in through Daniel's apartment window the next day. There were people obviously romping about upstairs given the amount of earthshaking noise they were making, but Daniel had gotten used to this. Every morning for the past two years since he had finally gotten through his higher education he woke up to one of those two things, provided the weather wasn't terrible or something didn't happen to the people upstairs. Rubbing his eyes, he sat up and looked around as if something may have changed about his indistinct living area. Nothing had changed. Nothing would change, either, unless he made an effort to do something about it, but he was rather indifferent. As long as he was paying the bills and not wanting to kill himself over his line of work, he was perfectly fine.

Standing, Daniel stretched a bit before noticing that he hadn't even changed out of what he was wearing the previous night before passing out in his rather unadorned bed. A slight inconvenience, but nothing that couldn't be rectified. Taking care of his morning pleasantries, Daniel got dressed for work and was picking up his essentials before heading to the front door of his small living space. There wasn't really much in the way of entertainment within his living space - why have material possessions when there are plenty of options to have fun that didn't cost him a cent?

He opened his front door to find his neighbor scolding her cat about being indecisive. The stench of used tobacco was thick in the hallway. Daniel was never a fan of cigarettes - they never really gave him any sort of buzz, whereas alcohol really did. Besides, there were all sorts of bad things that happened to smokers eventually. They may enjoy it now, but give it some time and they'll all wish they hadn't. His neighbor greeted him as they made eye contact. He hadn't really intended to interact with anyone - he was a bit behind schedule on making sure he got to work on time. "Ah. Morning..." Daniel drifted off trying to remember the woman's name. He was really bad with names unless he saw them a lot. The only reason he remembered Sam's at all was because he was a rather annoying presence on social media. Then it came to him. "Mia. How are you doing?" As he stepped outside and locked his door, his stomach audibly growled. "Mmm, I'm starving..." he thought aloud. It'd probably be a good idea to make sure I get at least a bit of food to keep at home so that I can eat breakfast on the odd occasion I actually wake up in the morning...

Despite the cicada song coming from Xacshire park, the sound of Daniel's stomach was audible enough for Mia to hear, with her eyebrow quirked in response. "I'm doin' alright," Mia replied, taking another drag on her cigarette. "You on the other hand look like you could use a bite. I don't ever see you coming home with any groceries - you aren't neglecting to take care of yourself, are you?" Such a thing wasn't unheard of for someone to do in Blue Avalon, as there were many tenants struggling to make ends meet. Working for the soul-crushing conglomerates and being ordered what to do, and how to do it on a daily basis often drove people to lose the ability to function on their own.

Many people preferred it this way; willingly allowing themselves to be treated as cattle. The corporate wheels were greased in the blood, sweat, and tears of its laborers, and in return they'd earn just enough to make it through the month. Just what was it that allowed the wealthy to stay on top? How did it come to be that there could exist an elite few that could earn a manifold of the average salary at a fraction of the effort? How can one be satisfied knowing they were relegated to mediocrity by the societal lottery? Perhaps there was no answer.

"Come on, why don't we stop by Milo's Cafe?" Mia suggested. "I don't wanna stand by and watch you starve or anything."

"I try to at least keep food in the refrigerator, but lately I just haven't had time. Work's been really stiff these past few days; I'm not sure what Shoemaker wants that I haven't already given." Daniel slyly slid his phone from his pocket to check the time. 8:15 AM. If he cut this conversation short, he may be about fifteen minutes early to work, which should give him a head start on the massive amount of paperwork he needed to process that was stuck in yesterday's backlog. Work work work work work, there never really seemed to be any kind of distraction that helped alleviate the pressure outside of the occasional nightly outing to the Cat's Eye. Even if those creeps kind of ruined it for him, he still had a good time.

Daniel looked at Mia as she suggested heading to Milo's Cafe, trying to hide his disdain when he caught another whiff of the secondhand smoke. He liked the woman well enough, but cigarettes weren't his thing. The offer was nice, but he really needed to get to work. They had been cutting people left and right from his department, and he would really rather not be the next to go because of something as trivial as breakfast. "I appreciate the offer, but I really need to get going for work." He finished closing the door and turned to lock it. "I overslept like usual and now I'm running late."

He started to leave the threshold towards the front of the complex. "Maybe some--" His stomach insistently growled in protest, as if it were commanding him to eat breakfast. "Agh, what the hell, sure, why not? I need to make it quick though. What are you thinking of getting?"

Mia blinked several times to process what Daniel had told her. "Shoemaker?" she repeated, her face beginning to crack up. "Your boss' name is 'Shoemaker'? Pfffffft! Ahahahahahaha! Motherfucking 'Shoemaker'?! Aaaaahahaha... oh, it's too much! I'm sorry! Ahem." She dropped the cigarette to the ground and put it out under her heel. "I'm sure... pfft... Shoemaker... can manage without you for a while. Let's go, we'll take my car." Mia guided Daniel to the parking lot, where they reached her impressive luxury vehicle. An old model, but still in prime condition - Mia prided herself in taking care of her things. Of course, nobody at Blue Avalon could reasonably afford such a car, and the age of it was a dead giveaway that it had to be a hand-me-down.

Mia climbed into the driver's seat and waited for Daniel to join her side. Leather upholstery. Either the last generation was living it up in style, or Mia had it made and was keeping it a secret from prying eyes. The refreshing stream of air rushed in through the air conditioner, but the radio wasn't in working of order. This was to be expected when modern radio is broadcasted via Exanet, something older cars were incompatible with. Without much delay, they would arrive at the cafe.

A friendly waitress greeted Mia as they walked in, the two seemingly familiar with each other. Her chipper smile was complimented by her smoky blue eyes, while her fair blonde hair was tied into a neat ponytail. "Heya, Mia! You still up? Didn't take you for a morning person. I always thought you were nocturnal." Mia would shrug and respond, "Yeah well, I had to work another double shift at the Ivory Palace. You know how it is in the Yisten District. I actually just got off work about an hour ago and went home to check on Kiwi. I figured I'd stop by before heading back and becoming intimately acquainted with my bed." The waitress frowned in sympathy. "Aww, sorry to hear that! I hope your boss isn't working you too hard."

"Raul? Nah, he's really cool. Best boss I've ever had, actually. He's letting me take a few days off after last night, so it's all good."

"So... who's your friend?"

"Oh right! This is Daniel. Daniel, this is Naya."

"Nice to meet'cha! So are you two..."

"Ahahaha, no. We've both live next to each other at Blue Avalon and passed by each other a few times. We've only talked a little bit, actually."

"Well, I think it's good that you're meeting people outside of work. Every time I try to get you to hang out in your free time, you're always cooped in your room playing video games or browsing image boards on Exanet."

"Priorities. I have them."

"Ugh, girl, you need to exist! Get out there and meet some guys! Live it up!"

"I've met plenty of guys at my workplace, and I've seen them do what they interpret as 'living it up'. Take it from me, it's an overrated experience."

"Oh, well I do go on. Go ahead and sit anywhere, I'll grab the menus for you."

When Mia and Daniel chose a booth, Naya brought them their menus and walked away to give them both time to decide what they wanted. "Sorry about keeping you waiting like that," Mia apologized. "When Naya pulls you into a conversation, you kinda lose track of everything. Your stomach must be killing you." She flipped over a few pages in the laminated menu listlessly, glossing over the various pictures of items since she had a good idea of what she already wanted. "This place is famous for their blueberry pancakes," she suggested. "It's what I usually get, and they always pick me up when I'm having a bad day. For their coffee, your best bet is to go with the vanilla creamer. If you're looking for a more hearty breakfast, there's the omelet, bacon, and sausage platter. Don't worry about it, it's on me."

Daniel wasn't sure why Mia reacted the way she did about his boss' name. Shoemaker was a perfectly reasonable last name to have in his opinion, he didn't really think it was funny, but maybe Mia had her own sense of humor that he just couldn't really understand. "Well, Shoemaker is his last name. First name is Kevin, I think, but I'm not really close to the guy, nor do I really care to be." At least, he thought his boss' first name was Kevin. In all likelihood it wasn't, given his bad habit to forget names he didn't really use often. "Maybe today'll be the day he doesn't notice that I don't come into work on time. I don't think I'd make it through a whole eight hour shift without eating something. I'm sure he'll understand..." Inklings of anxiety were flitting through his mind, but his stomach was drowning them out. He followed Mia to her car - which was unexpectedly nice. He didn't think that many people owned cars in this part of the city, let alone something as nice as this one. It was dawning on Daniel that he really didn't know all that much about Mia after all, even though they had been neighbors since he had moved in a couple of years ago.

He climbed into the passenger's seat when Mia offered and took relief in the air conditioning that blew through the vents. He didn't have too much to say to her on the way to the cafe, so the ride was mostly silent. It was a nice retreat to just enjoy the scenery for a bit - if one could call it that, what with the sheer number of skyscrapers threatening to completely blot out the skyline. Now that he had made the decision to eat, he was rather looking forward to having a hot meal without being hunched over paperwork and talking to an interesting woman. That redheaded chick from the other night also had potential... if that burly beastkin weren't with her, maybe that could've gone somewhere as well. His thoughts continued to drift as they sped towards the cafe.

-----~-----

As Daniel walked into Milo's Cafe with Mia, he noticed how the first waitress he saw immediately took towards Mia, as if the two knew each other. She had a really cute smile, and nice eyes. He stared at the waitress for a moment, appraising her, appreciating a good view. The two women prattled on for a bit, and Daniel smiled and nodded when he was cued to. There really wasn't much room to interject any conversation of his own between them. Besides, he was too hungry to think of too much to say that was remotely intelligent. Come to think of it, the last time he had eaten anything was before he had went to the Cat's Eye the night before, and even that wasn't much. He did take note that Naya the friendly waitress thought that Daniel was going out with Mia, which he hadn't really considered himself. He took a look at Mia when she said that. Video games, social media... Mia does seem like she could be my kind of girl, doesn't she?

"Oh, well I do go on. Go ahead and sit anywhere, I'll grab the menus for you."

Daniel snapped out of his musings and followed Mia to a booth near the front door. Mia apologized for Naya's rambling. No worries," Daniel chuckled, "Sam, a friend of mine, is exactly the same way. I consider wearing earplugs half the time when I go out with him." Naya came back with the menus and Daniel thanked her, scanning through the various breakfast food that the cafe had to offer. Pretty much all standard fare, though he had never been here for breakfast before since he never was responsible enough to wake up early in the morning. He flipped to the page with blueberry pancakes on Mia's suggestion, but when she mentioned paying for him, he looked up at her. "Oh please, you don't need to do that for me. I have a little bit of money to spend on food, I'd feel bad."

"Trust me, Naya has a way of getting what she wants to say across. If you popped in earplugs, she'd probably pantomime at you. She's fluent with sign language, you know," Mia mused, playfully flipping a page of the menu back and forth with her finger. "She's good people, though. If you get on good terms with her, you'll get to know her connections. She has quite the extensive network." When Daniel mentioned that Mia did not have to pay for him, a look of skepticism formed on her face. "Oh, come on, you aren't one of those chivalrous types... are you?" she questioned, leaning the side of her head against her hand. "Talk about old-fashioned. Personally, I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, and food definitely tastes better when it's free. Besides, I'm the one that dragged you away from work. It's the least I can do." Mia closed the menu; a signal for Naya to come back to the table. "Trust me, you aren't imposing. If you really feel so bad about it, then how about you pay me back by telling me about yourself? Like... what do you for work? I mean, I'd be interested in knowing what I'm keeping you from."

Naya made it to the table, notepad and pen in hand. "Are we all set?" she prepared. "Yeah, I'll have the octopus," she answered with a straight face.

"Umm..."

"Yeah, and some frog legs, too. And you know what? A whole goat!" Her voice perked up with enthusiasm, as she slammed her fist on the table. "Is the goat in season?"

"Honey, I think you've got the wrong-"

"Just fuckin' with ya, Naya. I'll have the usual. Blueberry pancakes and a pitcher of coffee. Vanilla creamer."

"Okay, now that sounds like something the Mia I know would order. I'll have the right out for you. What about you, Daniel?"

Daniel listened to Mia as she noted that Naya was practically her version of Sam. "Yeah, I can tell she has a good heart." Among other good things... He slyly looked after Naya as she retreated to give Mia and himself some time to think. "I'm curious what kind of contacts she has, maybe she could get me into a job that isn't quite as demanding as the one I have!" He chuckled and absentmindedly stared in the kitchen's general direction until he heard her trying to refuse him paying for his meal. Daniel blushed with embarrassment as Mia called his actions "chivalrous". He was just trying to be polite, and look good in case there was anything to hit off here, he wasn't trying to be silly. "I-it's not like that really. You're being really nice to me and I don't want to impose on you or anything when I haven't done anything for you, you know?"

Before he could protest any further, Naya had come back to their table while Daniel wasn't watching with notepad in hand, ready to take their orders. Mia was making a show out of hers, obviously enjoying herself. He appreciated the time that she was buying him, but he couldn't really decide what he wanted to eat. When Naya asked Daniel what he wanted to order, he didn't have an answer. Winging it, he attempted to flash a charming smile at Naya. Hopefully he could impress her so they could chat later. "I'll have what Mia's having. Thanks, Naya." He nodded in Mia's direction as he said that. Was it bad to be trying to impress two women at the same time? Perhaps, but he really was starting to take keen to the both of them. They seemed nice enough, and he hadn't had enough time for himself in a really long time.

"Two orders of blueberry pancakes and a big pitcher of coffee, coming up," Naya confirmed, jotting down the order. The waitress didn't seem to pay any particular attention to Daniel's smile, as not many people were impressed by such a simple gesture. Naya tore the sheet off the notepad and left the table to deliver it to the kitchen in the back. "Jeez, it's not like I'm going to think you're a freeloader or anything, if that's what you're worried about," Mia assured Daniel. "Look, Naya and I are pretty close. If I were to tell her not to take your money so I can pay for this, then she's gonna let me. So you can keep insisting all you want, it's not really going to do you any good. Rather than waste your breath trying to argue over something you can't control, why don't we talk about something more worthwhile? That sound good?"

Mia's fingers thrummed on the table in rhythmical order, as she brought up her previous idea. "So about telling me about yourself," she started. "Where do you work, exactly? What's... heh... Shoemaker making you do all day? I mean, it's kinda weird that we haven't actually sat down and actually talked for as long as we've been living next to each other, but better late than never. Plus, Naya was kinda right about me needing to 'exist' outside of work. I talk to my cat, but he isn't actually one for conversation. I swear, Naya looked like her eyes were going to pop out of her head when I didn't come here alone for once." The waitress returned, setting down the plates of pancakes and the full carafe.

"Mhm... I thought I heard my name. Were you guys talking about meeeee?" Naya asked in her sing-song voice.

"Nah, you're just paranoid. Thanks for bringing us our food, though," Mia teased.

"Okaaaaaaay, let me know if you two need anything else." And with that, Naya ambled merrily into the back once again. Mia began cutting into her pancakes and filled her mug while she waited for Daniel to answer.

Daniel was a tad bit miffed when he saw that Naya didn't really notice his gesture of interest. He'd have to try harder in the future if he wanted to make sure that his point clearly came across. Mia had then noted that even if he had wanted to try and pay for himself, she knew the waitress and Naya would refuse to let him pay for his meal. "I guess you've got a point there, Mia. At least let me tip, though!" He fidgeted a bit as his stomach growled again. The smell of pancakes was wafting through the restaurant from the kitchen, and he was already practically drooling all over himself. "Mmm, those pancakes smell really good..." He started getting lost in finally being able to eat something.

Mia started drumming her fingernails on the table, which kind of brought him back to reality. She mentioned having Daniel tell her a bit about himself, and he wasn't really trying to hide anything after all. His only concern was that he was just so bland and unoriginal. Usually in the city, people had some sort of hobby that they got to integrate into their work, but he was just an ordinary office worker that rarely saw the light of day once he retreated into his cubicle. "Yeah, it's really strange. You'd think that as neighbors we would've done this sooner, perhaps when I didn't have work." Daniel chuckled a bit, relaxing more into his seat as he was talking with Mia. He didn't realize just how uptight and tense he had gotten thinking about what might happen if he didn't go in on time. This outing was probably really good for him in the long term.

"I make it sound really terrible, but all things considered, working for Glotech isn't all bad. It gets the bills paid and it keeps me fed for the most part. Shoemaker's not a bad guy, either, he just likes to hold the reins tight." Daniel sighed and leaned on the table. "Things have been difficult what with people turning over faster than we get new hires, so there's only two other guys in QA with me now. If I remember right, I still have half a stack of TPS reports to work through for our next procedures meeting... which is after lunch today." Daniel leaned back, palm covering his face. "I honestly think I'll go insane if I keep being stretched to the brim like this. What I wouldn't give to just take a detour more often than once every six months or something...

By that point, Naya came back to the booth with her singsongy voice. Mia had already taken the lead on addressing her, so Daniel just sat back taking a deep whiff of the pancakes. Mia was right, if they tasted half as good as they smelled, they'd be divine, at least, compared to the fare he was used to eating at home alone. "Mmm, this smells great! Thanks again, Naya." He didn't even wait for the coffee to be set down before he started tearing into the first pancake. It burned his tongue a bit, but he didn't really care. It tasted great and he'd be satisfied for a while. "Wow, this is really good. I need to come here more often." His mouth was mostly full of pancake by this point, but when he finally inhaled the first pancake, he took a moment to try and remember his manners. Naya had already sauntered away by that point.

A bit embarrassed by just how hungry he had gotten, he started to blush and eat a lot slower. "But yes, that's basically my adult life in a nutshell. What about you, what do you do with yourself when you're not here or talking to your cat?"

"'Fraid I got the tip covered too," Mia declined. "Really. Don't worry about it." Daniel's persistence was getting a little annoying, but Mia couldn't complain as she was the one that extended the invitation to begin with. Naya returned to set the pancakes while Daniel told Mia of his profession. "So you're a pencil pusher, huh? I'd be surprised if half the people in this city weren't working some kind of desk job," she commented, cutting into her pancakes with her silverware in a civilized and orderly manner. Then came Daniel returning the question. "Gee, when you put it that way, you make me sound like a total loser," she remarked. "Well, I used to work at a grocery a few years ago. Wasn't really enough so I started moonlighting as a bartender at the Ivory Palace. I was making much more over there then I was at the grocery, especially with the tips, so I just dropped the grocery job altogether and worked at the bar full-time. I actually met Naya there when she first dropped by for a drink."

"There it is agaaaaaaain," Naya's voice rang over the counter.

"It goes without saying that she's got a real ear for gossip."

Naya passed by the booth with a smirk as she opened the front door for some other arriving customers, greeting them and then seating them to a table. Mia sipped her mug of coffee and finished her pancakes, reaching into her coat afterwards. She grabbed out her pack of cigarettes and placed one in her mouth to light it, and then held the carton out towards Daniel. "Want one?" she offered. Naya cleared her throat and gave a look at Mia like a mother ready to give her child a stern talking-to. "Can't smoke here, Mia," she informed her.

"Serious?"

"You know you're my bestie and I don't normally mind when there's nobody else here, but the traffic's starting to pick up, and I really don't want to hear complaints from the other customers. Besides, it doesn't look like Daniel over here likes it either. I can pick up on these things, you know."

"Fine. Just pass us the check, would you?" Mia conceded, putting it out and tossing it in the waste bin behind her. Naya went back to tending her rounds, making her way for the register as Mia brought up her concern.

"Does smoking really bother you?"

"Mmm, if you say so." Mia's insistence on not letting Daniel pay for his portion was off-putting, but free food was free, and it really tasted great. He couldn't really put her down for that. He poured himself a mug of coffee and creamed it as Mia told him a bit about herself as well. Huh, I didn't know people made a decent living bartending. He continued eating and nodding where appropriate. Naya seemed to have a supernatural ear as she somehow heard her name in passing and started coming over towards their table. "I should say so." Daniel agreed and chuckled as Naya passed by. He was having a hard time choosing which woman to pay attention to, but that wasn't entirely his fault since Naya was such a stunning presence that always seemed to have her ear right in between Mia and himself.

Mia offered Daniel a cigarette as she lit her own. Smoking wasn't really his thing, but he never really made that clear to her. As he was going to say no, Naya came back by like a mother hen catching her chick in the cookie jar. Naya sternly informed Mia that smoking wasn't allowed in the restaurant. Daniel breathed an internal sigh of relief as the two women exchanged words, until Naya in particular mentioned Daniel's distaste for smoking. Wait, how did she know that? I've barely met this woman and I've never mentioned it! As Naya went back to the register, Daniel had wide eyes as he turned back to Mia. "Eh, smoking just isn't my thing. I could never get over the smell, and it never really did anything for me that a good drink couldn't. There's also all of the conspiracy theories that smoking is worse for you than various ODs, but I could care less." He finished off the last of his pancakes and started chasing them down with coffee. Man, I feel a lot better now. I can't believe I let myself get that hungry.

"Fair enough. I'll keep that in mind whenever I'm around you from now on," Mia assured, finishing off the rest of her plate. "I'll take care of this check, c'mon," Mia said as she directed Daniel to follow her to register, but not before leaving the tip. The woman grabbed a bill from her wallet and slapped it on the table, revealing that it had been entirely defaced with marker, depicting profanities and phallic drawings scrawled all over the surface. "This is why I wanted to take care of the tip too," Mia grinned. "See, a couple of months ago some guy gave me this as a tip at the bar. As a joke I gave it to Naya the next time I visited this place, and then she went right up and gave it back when she visited my workplace. We've been giving each other that same bill as a tip back and forth ever since. It's kind of our thing. That bill will probably come right back to me the next time Naya comes to the Ivory Palace."

At the register, Naya rang up the total to which Mia paid off. Naya nodded at the both of them as she handed Mia the receipt. "Did you enjoy your meal?" she beamed, a smile that could light up the whole room. "Well I order it almost every time so-"

"Well of course I know you enjoyed it Mia," Naya interrupted in a sassy but playful demeanor. "Otherwise you wouldn't keep coming here. I was asking Daniel."

"Pfft, like I come here for the food. You should know by now I only come here for the hot waitresses."

"This is me rolling my eyes, Mia. Do not be alarmed and think that I am having a stroke."
