Not wanting to bend down, Vendetta quickly kicked a pile of leaves, revealing a loose tree branch. Unfortunately, she had to bend down to pick it up. She sighed and threw the branch behind her, hoping to form a pile of branches with the others.

"Okay, that's fine then." Authur smiled. It would be a bit dissipointing if Marya got hurt on the day they were supposed to hang out. Still, there was work to be done, and then they could go to the mall.

Seeing that the others had been pricked by pinecones once more, Vendetta was a little hesitant when it came to searching the final pile of foliage, yet she mustered up enough bravery to shove her hand into the pile and pull out a fine tree branch.

Though her hands were hurting a lot, Marya smiled at the pile of branches they had formed. That's when Marya's mom came out of the house, a pleased look on her face. "Hey, nice job, you three," she said kindly. "I think you all deserve a reward." She reached into her pocket and pulled out her wallet. She took three twenty dollar bills and handed one to each of the kids. "I assume you three are going to the mall, right? Would you like a ride? I don't think both Marya and Vendetta will fit on your motorcycle, will they, Authur?" She gave the boy a gentle smile.

Authur smiled back at Marya's mom. "No, but I've been thinkin' about getting a side car. What d'you think?"

His hand was still bleeding, so he tried to wipe it on his jacket. He made a nice smear and caused a shock of pain to shoot through his hand. "OWW! Da-dang! Ah, sorry . . . you got a napkin or towel, or something? There were some pretty nasty pinecones out here . . . "

Marya's mom laughed at Authur's sidecar comment. "I think I'd feel more comfortable driving my own daughter," she said lightly. "No offense intended of course."

Marya sighed. "Mom, we hurt our hands on some pinecones, so could you make with the repairs already," she said impatiently, her hands feeling as if they were on fire.

Marya's mom raised an eyebrow questioningly. "What are you talking about dear? Your hands look fine to me. And so do your friends's hands," she said, confusion in her voice.

Now, it was Marya's turn to be confused. She looked down at her hands and gasped; they were fine. "W-what?" was all she could manage as she held them up to her face. "B-but we found some pinecones a-and they pricked our hands and cut them up," she tried to explain. She looked around frantically, but there was not a single pinecone in sight. Had they thrown them all away?

"Myself as well." Vendetta examined her fingers, which were completely unscathed. She then turned her head towards the backyard, attempting to wonder what might've happened. Paranormal activity? . . . She turned back towards Marya's mother, No. . . It couldn't be. . .

"I would be extremely grateful if we could ride in your car to get to the mall, Mrs. Liddell." Vendetta bowed towards the woman.
