Once, in an era so long-lost and desolate, mothers taught their children of the mythical land of Advena -- a wild and estranged land filled with twisted elemental creatures and vile and beasts of the night, who lurked and turned in the darkest boughs of the Nightwood and the most frightening depths of the Crystalline Falls. An epoch passed, and then so did another, and parents continued to gossip the epic of Advena, and their children whimsied and fantasized about the stories they were told, and the endless tales never died.

The year is 1817, and the fabled tale of the Rose of Revolution has engrained its words into the imaginations of carpenters, students, engineers, farmers, and government associates alike. Living in a society fueled by the advancement of steam technology and the eternal suppression of godlike spirits, Canthan people have developed an industrial dependence on the sacred energy emitted by the magical beasts they have constrained; this energy has been dubbed "Cantus" by society.

In contrast to the medieval and primitive learning institutions integrated into the population by the Advenian government, Cantha has developed a particularly intricate and intense learning system in which the majority of society must complete eight studious years of college in pursuit of their declared study sect of choice. In the Ravynfel Institution of Wallen, Cantha, a distinct group of hard-working students of various levels of professionalism discover a dark secret, abruptly altering their steadily-crafted world view for the better or the worse.

Hey guys! I'm back! I'm probably not going to be participating in too many RPs now that I have other things I need to focus on, but I would love to participate in 2 or three of them and run another one or two. Anywho, this RP has one specific requirement as far as character creation goes. Your character must be 16-24 years of age in order to fit the "college student" persona the plot "sneak peek" hints at.

The profile page is particularly standard for a statistical RP, but I would also like you to tell me what your character would like to major in. This is not important at all, but I'm curious.

Ashes of sulphur caked Jacqueline's caliced palm as she frantically scurried from the rapidly growing vines of an eldritch abomination, having miraculously (using the word loosely) conjured the alchemic monstrosity within the boundaries of her own personal dormitory seconds earlier. She might've awoken the young man over in Dormitory 301 with her clamoring and the menacing groggling of whatever tentacle-beast she had crafted, but such temporary predicaments amounted to nothing when compared to the true menacing threat -- the potential damage the plant could cause to Ravynfel.

Jars of liquidized silver and hunks of nucleosynthesized germanium spattered across Jacqueline's floor in an uncouth, yet awkwardly successful attempt at confining the monstrosity within her sleeping quarters. Imprisoned within the gray-plastered walls of her chemical-coated and strangely radioactive washroom, Jacqueline, puzzled yet as pretentiously astute and unaware of her own egregious errors as always, simply waited. That across-the-hall guy (Jacqueline thought his name to be "Karmen," or perhaps "Carmel" or something akin to that), who our studious failure of a botanist had once considered a minor inconvenience, was now Jacqueline's only hope for escape.

She could only wait, sitting in that typically faux and pretending stature on that cold, metallic toilet, in some sort of desperate hope that her vegetable buddy (who was probably squirting some sort of hyperacidic juice all over Jacqueline's bed at this point) had awoken Karmen.

Ah, yes, Karmen was his name. He had always been the "heroic" (he's not very heroic) one who would smack some sense into Jacqueline whenever one of her plant friends (or "fiends," as Karmen called them) grew out of control. At least, that's what Jacqueline thought. But we don't like to talk about what Jacqueline thinks about, because often times that leads to hydrogenated squirrels and toxic watermelon children.

The engineering quarters were strangely quiet, with students peacefully working on their personal projects. Nothing but the calm hissing of small steam pumps and arcing electricity, added to the occasional clockwork...

thud

Apparently, someone was working on something a little bigger than the others. Well, finding out who was a simple matter of looking around and seeing whoever is not on si-

THUD

Students looked around, nervous. This one was louder. Or maybe closer. Neither of the options was very promissing. Everyone seemed to be on sight. Except...where was that nutjob with the giant sword?

THUD

A nearby wall burst into dust and pebbles under the force of the answer crashing through it and rolling on the floor, coming to a stop in the middle of the common room. The girl was quick to get on her feet and put her brassiere back into place, before too much information could be seen. Sallete Deschain started to swipe the dust off her shorts and jacket, under the startled and accusing glare of her peers. There was no point in trying to clean the bare skin, the sweat made sure the dirt would be stuck until she took a bath.

-Before anyone asks, I'm working on a project. An AAWU, Automated Assembly Work Unit, to help me on the other works. There was an...unexpected issue.

The sound of a wall coming down, or maybe a hole being enlarged caught the attention of the many students present. Sallete finished her (little) clothing and proceeded to her short hair.

-Oh, it seems it tracked me. Guess I got the navigation system right. I believe anyone who is not used to fighting should leave this room, but I'd be thrilled to have a little help.

A red laser beam cut the wall, making the hole large enough for the authomaton to come in. The four-legged robot quickly identified its target inside, while most students quickly got out of the scene, not a too uncommon need these days. Sallete crouched and took her huge Engine Sword in hands, the monstrous weapon starting on into a faint huming.

Angie Turner, a short girl with a knack for mechanics, stood on the far side of the room, welding together pieces of steel. She had all the proper safety measures taken care of, the headgear, the gloves, the heavy coat. She was protected from the intense heat of the welding torch and the sparks that flew off of it. Tufts of her gray hair stuck up in a random fashion, the results of her constantly rubbing her head with her gloves. It wasn't lice, just a thinking habit.

She didn't notice any disturbance until the second time, which is when she stopped what she was doing to look up. Curious, Angie turned off her welding torch and set it aside carefully. She lifted her mask to reveal a beautiful, face with flawless, yet dirty, face. Angie once told a friend from the science department that her make-up was dirt, and her deodorant was sweat. Reddish-brown eyes looked around curiously, other students were also stopping their work.

Another thud and a crash later, and the wall to the engineering department grew a new hole. Angie had to admit she was not surprised to see that Sallete (she often called her Sally for short) was the culprit. Another one of her inventions gone awry, apparently. Angie's lips quirked up in a smirk when she saw the girl. One of these days, the engineering department is going to learn to never leave the mechanics without supervision.

"Sally!" Angie called, just as the mechanized unit crashed through the open hole, making it bigger with, of all things, a laser. "Where the hell did you get the materials to make a laser!?" Angie shouted, unable to contain her laughter. Angie took off her mask and her overcoat, leaving her in a grey tank top and her workman's pants. She also switched gloves, to those more comfortable and snug. She walked over to Sally, cracking her knuckles.

"Seriously, Sally. You need to stop making these giant contraptions," Angie scolded, not bothering to hide her amused expression. "One day you'll end up making this whole place a ruin. People of the future will dig up these ruins and wonder how we became extinct. All they'll find is giant plates of steel and iron welded together in the form of some giant beast."

Revolution: Inverse Empty Re: Revolution: Inverse

Post by Masquerade Thu Nov 01, 2012 1:46 pm

The sound of tweeting birds was crushed beneath the immense raucous coming from across the hall. A dreary Karmen scratched his head and put down the "interesting" magazine he was reading, sighing. Granted he was awake already, but he knew that if he had tried to get some more sleep earlier, this would have been his alarm clock. The raucous wasn't unfounded. He already knew where the commotion was occurring, and that was in the room of Jacqueline who delved way too much into her study of botany to the point where floral abominations weren't uncommon. That was not a good thing. Wearing nothing but black silk boxers, Karmen clambered out of bed and took his time reaching his closet, pulling out a set of black, feathered robes. He crawled into them, smoothing them out so they looked at least somewhat decent. His hair was going to have to wait. Shuffling across the floor, he opened his door only for the cacophony across the hall to become louder. Two sleepy eyes blinked it off and he crossed the hall apprehensively, not even bothering to knock on the door. It was likely he would not have been heard anyway.

"Jacqueline?! What have you done this time?!" Karmen shouted as he crossed the threshold into her dorm room only to catch sight of the problem which was very disheartening. "I'm not even going to ask," he muttered to himself, stretching a bit. He materialized a thick tome--naught more than a fantasy novel with avian heroes, but with the hidden wisdom resting within, he could draw power from it in the form of magic. We have a healthy exchange going here: I get fruit and seeds for my birds, and I save her from her twisted tentacle fetish monsters, he thought simply, going farther into the room. He looked about, but Jacqueline herself was nowhere to be seen. He wondered if he was expected to solo the thing.

Wouldn't be the first time, Karmen thought with a shrug, keeping his now fierce gaze focused on the plant creature. It wasn't necessarily right for him to be used to this sort of thing. What kind of college student was subjected by force to situations of this accord? Not the mundane sort, of course. Karmen hardly knew Jacqueline. Two things he did know: his birds loved her fruit and seeds, and she was great at getting herself into trouble through her studies. And he knew her name. He was hoping that she had learned his by now. If it weren't for the fact that she lived across the hall from him, he wouldn't have stepped in to help the first time or any subsequent time, but if he didn't help her, no one would and the noise would merely persist. So he did help. And now he was helping once more, waiting for the girl to show herself.

Having finished her assignment several hours ago, Dirge had chosen to play in a stairwell of the science dormitories. The acoustics were, as always, amazing, but she could not help feeling there was something off. She remembered any other time she played in the stairwell the echo was smooth and fluid; today it felt distorted. Her natural composure itself was also abnormal. Her muscles were unbearably tight, her jaw was especially rigid. A rather loud crash caused her to stop mid-bar and swiftly turn towards the upstairs.

Her lips pursed into a tight line before she dashed up the stairs, noticing a young man not much younger than her calmly stepping into another dorm. She did not call out to him, rather she quickened her pace and slipped in also. Despite his calm demeanor something was obviously wrong, and though it was none of her business she felt need to check it out. It had been a pretty loud crash after all.

Vanessa was nearly speechless when she heard that loud crash, turned to see the wall breaking, and then watched the cause of said crash landing only a few feet beside her. She didn't even need to see the short blonde hair and the girl's lack of clothing to know it was her friend Satelle. Who else would make such a huge ruckus? She was about to ask Satelle what went wrong this time when the girl answered the question before she even asked: giant automated robots. Said robots immediately burst through the same wall that Satelle had crashed through (the place is going to be in ruins after this, again) and Vanessa had a hard time believing those things would be able to help with anything besides breaking things.

"How many times has this happened this month now Satelle? You seriously need to have some safety measures." Vanessa said, lightly smacking her friend upside the head, "And how the hell did you expect this thing with a laser to help you with any kind of work?" She let out a sigh and made her way to the pieces of the mechanical suit lying on the table beside her current project. She readied herself for combat fairly quickly, since her work clothes was the same form-fitting outfit she wore within the combat suit and the cannon which practically replaced her right forearm could easily be slipped on before it locked into place. "Alright, let's do this." Vanessa sighed again as she grabbed the helmet on the table and pull it over her head, "This is starting to become routine for me."

She could hear something normal amidst all of the groggling and the splashes and the ooze, and it sounded like the "Carmel" kind of normal. Instantly toppling off of the toilet and spattering all sorts of chemicals all over the floor, Jacqueline ecstatically slammed her ear against the door to get a closer inspection. It didn't help much, but she thought it did.

"Carmel is that you!? Thank goodness you've come! I've encountered a slight problem with my most recent experiment!" She stammered sheepishly against the door, not wishing to expose her helplessness to her colleague, but that probably wasn't too successful. "I would love to name that piece of celery 'Garfunkel' or maybe even 'Cosmo', but I might need to put him down if he doesn't calm himself!"

She opened the bathroom door with apprehension, examining her surroundings with care as she quietly stepped into her saliva-coated dormitory. Stumbling and tripping her way over to Karmen with a childish sort of excitement, she quickly embraced the young man, sharing all of that sulphuric radiation she had collected during her noisy endeavors.

"We probably have to put him down, don't we?" Jacqueline sighed, with that smoky-sciency breath of hers, "It's a shame."

A voice sounded from the bathroom, and Karmen didn't even have to hear it clearly to know who it was. Apparently, the bathroom had been Jacqueline's source of sanctuary instead of running directly out of the dorm room and across the hall to garner Karmen's assistance. She was lucky that he wasn't in class or doing research. It turned out to be the same old, same old. This monstrous abomination was supposedly some kind of pet. In what universe would something like this be kept as a pet? Before he could think more on the matter, he turned his head to take notice of another person who had meandered into the room...by mistake? She looked familiar. Ignoring the sound of the bathroom door opening, he inquired quickly: "Do I know you?" The answer was forced to wait as Karmen found himself trapped in the embrace of the botanist, the smell of chemicals blasting up his nostrils and making him nauseous. How she dealt with all this shit was completely beyond him. There was no fathoming it. This is why he preferred never to be around her, let alone enter her disgusting room which was a complete wreck at the moment.

"Ugh, you wreak," Karmen wasted no time in expressing his obvious disgust. He placed his hands firmly on Jacqueline's shoulders and pushed her back, even though the distance didn't help. The sulfurous stench had already settled in his nose and it planned to linger there for at least a little while. Scratching the back of his head, he realized he'd have to take a shower soon; he didn't want to smell like rotten eggs and who knows what else. He wasn't too intent to investigate exactly what the stench was reminiscent of. "The name is Karmen, not 'Carmel', by the way. Getting closer, I suppose," he stated, pointing at the plant monster. "And that is getting put down. We don't really have another choice at this point." How does one calm a raging, floral tentacle beast? Karmen shook his head. "You have the oddest fetish, Jacqueline," the ornithologist muttered under his breath. He turned to gaze at the other girl that he thought he knew from somewhere. "And you volunteered yourself for some eradication, so I hope you're ready," he told her with a rather listless look. She could run if she wanted to; he didn't really care what she did, but the extra help would definitely be appreciated.

Entirely disregarding Karmen's criticisms and suggestions, Jacqueline's eyes suddenly shifted to the doorway, where a familiar face stood. Jacqueline couldn't quite read her expression, but that was fine. She briefly, yet unsuccessfully brushed herself up after being shoved out of Karmen's grasp, and then threw herself at Dirge, who was most likely quite unsuspecting of the attack.

"Oh, I'm so glad you're here, Surge!" She wrapped her arms around the young maiden, whipping her back and forth with her intense and friendly grip. "You should probably stick around and help Carmel and I clean up after Cosmo."

She truly did ignore Karmen. Entirely.

Dirge's nose scrunched up as the smell of chemicals hit her nose. Despite being a chemistry major she never did have a taste for hands-on part of the job. The knowledge it provided was her main target for taking the courses she did; one could never know when they might need it. It was only second after the noxious fumes hit her that she realized where she was, and her pursed lips formed a frown. "Oh Jackie..." she murmured, eyes darting over to the young man she spotted just moment earlier. Now that she got a better look, he was familiar.

"Do I know you?" he asked quickly, but her reply was forced to wait. Jacqueline's sudden embrace and exclamation cutting her off. Dirge's frown flashed to a look of confusion before she quietly chuckled. Carmel? Interesting name. However, the young man quickly corrected her. Karmen. That seemed to fit. She was about to join them when she felt her friend suddenly cling to her and call her 'Surge.' The violinist ignored her completely, gaze returning to the somewhat familiar face.

"I am quite prepared," she responded, "and to answer your previous question: Yes. I believe so. You're quite familiar yourself."

Angie starts at I-7

"Hey Nessa!" Angie called to the combat-suit-wearing engineer, waving a little. They were all friends, of course. Sally's constant experiments and mechanoids helped with that. Through this experience, Angie got to know the both of them. Sally was the eccentric risk-taker that always put them in danger. Nessa was the combat engineer that helped dispose of the menaces as they came. Angie supported them in any way she could, whether it was from digging up materials with her energy or by blowing shit up.

Angie was quite adept and blowing shit up.

"Come on, Nessa," Angie said teasingly when she saw the engineer whack the other. "We're all friends here, a few machines like these are easy for us engineers to handle."

Karmen starts at H6.

Karmen was certainly glad the attention was off of him, seeing that 'Surge' was now the subject of her craziness, if it could even be called that. A burst of feathers blasted outwards, drifting lazily through the air after the initial burst. A dark aura surrounded his form as he leafed through his tome, two black birds perched upon his shoulders, one on each shoulder. Their heads twitched as they gazed about with glowing red eyes, their main targets being the plant monster ahead of them and the subtle spores. Karmen kept his ears open as 'Surge' gave her response. "Perhaps we've met in passing. The name's Karmen. And I take it your name's not 'Surge', right?" he spoke calmly, a tinge of lightheartedness weighing on his voice. Others might be baffled by his lack of panic, but this had become somewhat typical for him which once again was a horrible inevitability. Perhaps one of these days he'd request a change in dorm rooms. Until that day came, however, he would be the hero time and time again, something he didn't really care for. He much preferred to sleep and read questionable material.

"Jacqueline, you really need to start getting names down," Karmen stated simply with somewhat of an exasperated sigh. The battle hadn't begun, and he was tired just from being in close contact to Jacqueline. There was also no telling what those chemicals were doing to him, but Jacqueline seemed okay enough...well, normal for her would be a better turn of phrase. She was far from mentally sound if this abomination was her idea of a pet. Perhaps what she had pictured in her mind's eye was smaller, cuter, and less lethal, but that was something Karmen would never care to know. Jacqueline's mind was like a forbidden zone, and it was likely to remain that way.

Sallete was about to answer Angie's question about the laser when Vanessa smacked her in the head. The girl rubbed the place, even though the hit didn't really hurt, or wasn't meant to, and looked her friend clad in battle suit.

-Hey, how do you expect a robot to be able to help WITHOUT a laser and multiple clawed limbs? That's like a rifle without a grenade launcher: utterly pointless.

She then looked at Angie an listened to her. The three friends, taming down another mechanical horror from her workshop. Girl, were these fun days. The weapon specialist had a wide smile across her dust-covered face, the blue eyes shining like a pair of sapphires when the last two AAWU entered the room and the three coordinated into attack position.

-Alright, try not to damage the laser cannons in their heads too much, those parts were hard as hell to come by, and I was expecting to salvage what I could. It's showtime, girls.

Vanessa starts at cell H-3

Of course Angie was in a good mood. That girl didn't seem to be bothered by the fact that they constantly had to clean up after Sallete's various messes. But Vanessa on the other hand felt like she was constantly being her friend's babysitter, having to get her out of all the trouble she got herself in. Especially since the girl didn't seem to like taking advice that would help her not put the three of them in this situation. Still, as much trouble as these little problems are, they were actually fairly enjoyable (even though she'd never actually admit this).

"Well first of all it'd be a slight problem when the robots in question malfunction and try to kill you." Vanessa responded, "Now if you made it less dangerous or actually took some safety measures maybe we wouldn't have this issue." When Sallete mentioned the laser cannons, Vanessa held back another sigh. She had a pretty good idea where her friend got those parts. "I'll try not to harm the lasers but I can't promise anything." Vanessa replied.

"No," Dirge responded whilst lifting her violin to its natural resting place. "My name is not 'Surge,' it is Tethys, but you may call me Dirge. In any other situation it would be a pleasure, I'm sure." she added simply, bringing her bow to the strings. Without saying anything more to her new acquaintance, Dirge began to play a fast-paced melody. She could feel energy building inside her as she did, and she knew that the others could feel it too. The rush of energy, the beat of their hearts quickening, the urge to make haste were all effects of her music. The consequences of her tune only increased as the piece came to a close.

Karmen moves to G5.

"Yeah, under better circumstances," Karmen said with a meager grimace, feeling somewhat more spry and full of vigor than normal. It had to have been Dirge's playing. There was nothing else that he could attribute it to other than natural adrenaline, but that wasn't very likely. Dirge was manipulating Cantus through music which was certainly a rather unique ability, but so was his own. He took a few steps, shielding the girls with his own body despite not being the most sturdy fighter around. He pointed at the large plant, ignoring the spores for the moment. One of the birds on his shoulder flew straight for the acid-spewing, tentacle-waving abomination, crashing into it and exploding on contact. The dark aura surrounding Karmen's form began to writhe and another black bird appeared on his vacant shoulder.

"That's not going to be enough, is it?" he stated simply, raising both arms. His aura lashed out, a dark wind surrounding him before going out of control, blowing all over the dorm room. From the wisps of wind surging about, a murder of crows appeared and swarmed, converging on the plant with what could only be denoted as complete persistence and disregard for their own well-being, and especially the well-being of the enemy. They scratched and pecked, scratched and pecked. Slowly, they began to disperse and the wind died down. Everything became calm, and Karmen didn't bother with the collateral damage. As long as Jacqueline's tentacle pet was still alive, the dorm room would only become worse in terms of its condition which was beyond deplorable as it was. Then again, he pictured Jacqueline's room to always be a complete mess anyway with all of her sick, chemical experiments.

-Oh, the killing part was a simple miscalculation for the scanning algorithm. Could happen to anyone. Don't make such a fuzz out of it, gray-eyes.

Sallete rests her Engine Sword horizontally, running her hand across the handle until she came by a small spining button. A short spin and a press made the engine roar with the raging sound of ignition. Smoke started coming out of the machinery, while the edge of the blade started shining deep red with incandescence.

Vanessa moves to cell I-2

"Yes, you say that every day." Vanessa responded to her friend with a sigh, "And flattery is going to get you nowhere Sallete."

Vanessa backed away from the killer robots and as she stopped at what she judged to be a safer distance the girl retrieved a metal cylindrical capsule roughly the size of her palm. Inserting it into a slot within the cannon that was her right forearm she waited a moment for the cannon to draw enough energy from the reactor before taking aim.

"I'll take care of the one on the left."

Angie grinned at her two friends as they bickered. They were like an old married couple, and of course Angie didn't want to miss any of the fun. "Don't forget me, you two," Angie said as she put her goggles on to protect her eyes. "Let me gussy up a bit here, and I'll be beautiful." Angie dropped to her knees and planted her hands on the ground, focusing her energy on digging up material from the earth beneath her. When she was ready, Angie slowly raised her hands off the ground, drawing a thin sliver of pure material from the ground.

Angie compressed the material with her gloves and managed to contain most of the explosion that resulted. A black and brown powder escaped and went everywhere, covering Angie's face and bare skin. She wiped the powder away from her goggles and grinned at her creation. A small, black grenade. Angie stood up and stepped forward, hurling the grenade as hard and far as she could. The little device landed and slid over to where the closest machine was, sliding until it was directly beneath it. In the next moment, a huge explosion overwhelmed the machine and bits of steel and dirt went flying.

"Woohoo!" Angie cheered, pumping her fist in the air. Her smile spread from ear-to-ear, even though the explosion didn't completely destroy the machine. "That's what I'm talkin' about!"

Jacqueline waits.

"Your tunes are exceptionally well-played today, Nurgle!"
Jacqueline exclaimed as she clapped her hands together ecstatically, skipping with the excitement of a young child, greatly contrasting Karmen's realistic, yet brooding attitude, "Don'tchoo worry, Carmel. Cosmo has a specially designed weakness to flames. I programmed him that way incase I needed to put him down! I'm glad I think ahead a whole lot, because I'm sure he would've done something bad if I hadn't."

Jacqueline held out her hand in front of her bosom, "Cantus spark, Rosefire!" On queue, her palm sprouted into a fantastic flurry of rosepetals, which furiously twirled and swirled over to the eldritch monstrosity. "I certainly hope this doesn't react with the phosphorus in my closet!" With a snap of her finger, the storm of flowers erupted into a bonfire of smoldering hot, almost magma-like fire.

And that day, Jacqueline discovered nature's paramount weakness to fire.
