Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos
~A SilvxZeri Roleplay~

Calista's Diary

4 / 14 / 212X – 13th Hour of Night

There's something wrong here... terribly wrong. I can feel it––this... awfulness––hanging in the air around me. I've felt it for years, maybe two or three, but I can never prove it. I'm the only one who notices it. Everyone else just piddles about like everything is perfectly fine––that the shorter hours of daylight and bumps in the night are natural. Everyone acts that I'm crazy, but I'm not. I can feel it! . . . whatever this is...

- - - - -

4 / 15 / 212X – 4th Hour of Light

In the veritable middle of its day, Motz seemed fairly typically. Citizens shopped in the market, conversed at the local tavern, and went about on their merry way as if all the light around them wasn't going to disappear in just three short hours. Perhaps one could chalk it up to the small town growing accustomed to the strange disappearance of radiance, but then again, how could a world so accustomed to the element only three years ago have gotten used to sparse periods of the stuff? Certainly there was more going on then met the eye, but little could be said for anyone who dared to raise the question; such people were deemed heretics, and heretics rarely remained in small towns for long. As soon as they revealed themselves, the extensive nights would gobble them up and all who remained pleasantly oblivious to the lacking day would continue along the status quo.

This is not to mean that unspoken questioners did not exist, quite the contrary, many chose to uphold the facade of naivety simply because they did not wish to follow the same path as their braver compatriots. After all, who would want to be swallowed by the night never to be seen again? No one in their right mind, naturally. This thought, however, did not stop them from existing, and therefore they questioned in silence, hidden away behind the masks of ignorance evermore to ponder the situation the world as they knew it fell into.

The same could not be said for Calista S. Reynolds.

Daughter of the wealthiest benefactor in all of Motz, Calista was the sole person in town who had openly shared her questions (albeit only with her closest friends and family) and not been whisked away in the haze of night. The others may have been perfectly alright with letting things play out as they had, but she could not sit passively. She constantly argued with her father over her feelings––terrible concentrations of negativity, as she called them––often demanding that something be done. Her questions could not remain unanswered just as this world could not remain in the dark as it had (for far too long by her opinion.) Her father, however, offered her the same reply each and every time the subject arose: There is nothing wrong here, please do not speak of such things.

Every time this reply confronted her, she would bite her tongue and concede to her father. But the questions would burn endlessly in her mind, and as such she would ask the same of others. Most times people would encourage her to focus her mind elsewhere, but she would persist in the necessity of discovering just what had happened. Her desire for the truth and the knowledge the grand design ran unerring. Because of this (and the fact that she had never been devoured by the maw of shadows,) rumors spread that she, herself, may have been the direct cause of this darkness plaguing the land––these rumors, however, went unnoticed by all except the silent heretics. And they would never speak a word.

All except for one.

It would be on her return to the small town after many a year out traveling that she would acknowledge the young woman's questions and encourage her to find the answers. This is where our story begins.

Motz. A quiet, out-of-the-way city where nothing happened. Or so it seemed. It appeared to be a quiet place, but it didn't always use to be like that. Something was missing. Something important. It was as if there was a cloud over the city, like the people had forgotten something very important. To the people who lived in the city, all was well, there was nothing to worry about. But the very fact that there was nothing to worry about made one young woman worry incessantly.

She sat outside a small coffee shop in the city, enjoying some hot cocoa while shivering in the cold. She couldn't stand this country and it's cold. She wished she could go someplace warmer. But no, there was something she had to do here, and she would get it done as quickly as possible. But first, she had to warm up as much as possible, hence the hot drink.

She shivered. Placing her empty cup down, she ran her hand through her hair, which was white as snow. She could feel the odd glances at her hair and her pale skin from miles away. But she didn't care. If Samira cared about her appearance, she would have dyed her hair red a long time ago. She wore a black jacket and black jeans, trying her best to absorb as much heat as she could in this insufferable cold. At least it wasn't snowing.

Samira stood up and glanced around. "Alright Samira, time to get moving," she murmured to herself, doing her best to heat her body by moving around, talking to herself, and shivering. She was headed towards the mansion of a rather wealthy family. She had been there a few times before, so it wasn't as if she wasn't an unwelcome guest. Samira believed that the family rather liked her, but her business wasn't necessarily with the family so much as it was with their daughter, Calista Reynolds.

At the doors to the mansion, Samira hesitated for a moment, wondering if knocking would even notify the residents within. Still, it was the polite thing to do. Clearing her throat, Samira fingered the small pouch at her side, drawing a card from the pouch. "Top card says," Samira murmured, looking at the card she drew. Three. Samira's lucky number. Feeling a bit more relaxed, Samira put the card back into her pouch, raised her fist, and knocked on the mansion doors.

No sooner than Samira had finished knocking did the polished wooden door swing open, a man fancily dressed in butler's attire holding it open with a bow. From further within, the card dealer could see quite well that several maids were rushing about tidying up in last minute preparations. This, however, held little import to the young woman, for the true focus of attention remained with a rather tall man garbed in a dark suit; he stood further back than the butler, talking with one of the servants before his storm-cloud-colored eyes settled on her. The instant that they did, he smiled.

"Samira, my child, it has been too long!" he exclaimed, sweeping over to the door and dismissing the butler who had opened it with a wave of his hand. "Come in, come in," he said whilst ushering her in. "We've been awaiting your arrival; I didn't quite believe Calista at first when she said she felt you would be here today, but she insisted you would be, and, as I'm sure you know, I could never allow a visit of yours to be tarnished by lack of preparations." He spoke with such vigor, a certain light in his eyes dancing as he swiftly led them to the drawing room. It seemed a whirl around the card dealer as he placed them each in a chair and ordered the curtains drawn, fireplace lit, doors closed, and Calista's presence all within just a few moments. The servants, however, were more than used to this pace when such guests as Samira did arrive on the premises, and, as such, moved without faltering.

It was no sooner that they had sat down that the two were alone. "Tell me, my child, where on earth have you been all this time? I have worried for you a great deal in your absence. Not a letter in so many months! I feared something might have happened to you." His words shot off like a spray of bullets, but there lay no doubt in the world he did not sincerely mean each one. There simply was something about the gentle creases on his forehead, the sparkle in his eyes, and warmness of his voice that implied, at least as far as Samira was concerned, that he genuinely cared for her.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

"Yes sir." Samira smiled as she was greeted by the father of Calista, the girl that she was really hoping to see. But knowing her father, there was no escaping this. Curse Calista for being so in tune with what Samira does. Samira wouldn't be surprised if Calista knew exactly what Samira was up to these past few months. She wasn't sure how long she had been gone, but it had been quite a long time. And just like the time away from home, it took almost no time at all for the two of them to get settled down, alone for now.

"Well, you know me," Samira said guiltily. She knew that she wasn't keeping in proper contact with the family, but considering what Samira was doing, it wasn't like she could put that all in a letter, in case unfriendly eyes caught it. "I've been around the world, there really wasn't much time to sit down and write a letter." Samira opened the pouch around her waist and took out a deck of cards, red and white in colored checkers. After giving the deck a shuffle, she dealt a few cards across the table and to herself. She wanted to test her luck again.

Four threes and an ace, right off the bat. Why was her luck so good today? Samira shivered again, though not from the cold, it was quite warm in the manor. There was something foul in the air, Samira was never this lucky. She expected to get cards back from the old man, so she was ready to trade from the top of the deck at any time.

"How's Calista been?" Samira asked, keeping herself neutral. She didn't want to expose her intentions right away. She already knew how her father would react.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Silver Sun Feb 16, 2014 12:47 pm

Calista's father nodded intently as the card dealer explained herself, a small smile spreading on the corners of his mouth as she began fiddling with the cards she always kept with her. He did not appear the slightest bit disappointed by her rather wishy-washy explanation as to why she had not written; on the contrary, he seemed just as delighted as ever. Although, if one were like Samira or even the currently non-present Calista, one would know that this simply was the man's manner. He rarely, if ever, allowed himself to be offset by less than favorable circumstance. The only time he ever showed emotion that wasn't positive was when Calista spoke to him of. . . those matters.

Such thoughts, however, currently dwelled elsewhere, outside of the aged man's mind. They remained so when Samira had spoken of Calista's current state; the wellbeing of his daughter did not directly relate to such negative instances anyhow. "If I could speak for her, I should say she's been doing quite well. Been painting quite a bit recently, quite talented if I do say so myself." Another smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, although this faltered slightly and he looked to the door which remained closed. "I do fear for her future, though. You see, my child, she has come of age where it is time for her to settle down––start her own life. I do not see such things happening anytime soon." The slightest bit of a frown. "She has many suitors, as I'm sure you must have as well my dear, but she takes to none. Perhaps you could talk to her? Help her see that many of these young men are proper gentlemen, ones that she should cons––"

He stopped speaking immediately as the door opened and his daughter quietly stepped into the room. Dressed in her usual dark gown, Calista looked the part of a princess, Mr. Reynold's doing no doubt. Regardless, there was little liveliness in her form, that is, until her icy-colored eyes found their way to Samira. Instantly a grin almost as wide as her father's spread on her face. "Samira," she greeted warmly, "I just knew today would be the day."

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Samira couldn't help but giggle when Mr. Reynolds started speaking of suitors and settling down. The Calista she knew would think of settling down as droll, complacent. She was still giggling when the door opened, but stopped upon seeing Calista enter. She wanted to say something to Reynolds, but with Calista here it would be better not to, for his sake more than for Calista's. She wasn't surprised to hear that Calista was expecting her, the girl's ability for divination was quite an amazing trait. Samira did stand up and gather her cards again. She glanced at the cards she had dealt to Mr. Reynolds. It was but a mix of different cards, a junk hand. That didn't bode well.

"Calista, dear sister," Samira smiled as she put her deck away. She didn't want to fiddle around with her cards now that Calista was here. She called Calista her sister because of how close they were, having known each other for a long time. Samira hardly remembered life without Calista there. But these past few months without the girl have been...difficult. "It's good to see you."

Samira walked closer to Calista, taking in the girl's appearance. She looked the part of the pampered child of the Reynolds family. The snow-white hair on both of their heads alone could make them blood sisters. "Papa Reynolds," Samira said, looking over at the older man. "It was nice to see you again. If you don't mind I'd like to speak with Calista for a bit."

Silently, to Calista, Samira spoke, "if you have a place where we can't be overheard, that would be great."

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

At this notion, Mr. Reynolds chuckled. "Of course, of course! Just let any of our servants know if you require anything, my dear! I'm certain they will attend to you posthaste." He smile for the umpteenth time, standing and gently placing a hand on the card dealer's shoulder for but a moment before taking his leave. His leaving, however, did not ease the tension that had gathered in Calista's shoulders upon hearing what Samira could have only spoken to her. In fact, she remained just as aware as ever that her father could potentially be listening at every moment.

Regardless, she did not say a word, merely nodded in Samira's direction and guided the already familiar card dealer to her room. "There is no such place in this house," Calista warned in a hushed whisper, "but, seeing as I'm not allowed to leave after the third hour, this will have to do." Her nerves remained like steel, but her face offered not a glimpse of it. Truth be told that she had been rather worried about her "sister's" arrival back in Motz, but she did not wish for her worry to appear noticeable. Whatever Samira needed to talk with her about––though she was fairly certain she knew what––there was little need to appear unable to handle it.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:22 pm

Samira entered quietly, taking note of the room which she was familiar with. This certainly wasn't the first time Samira had been in Calista's room, and depending on how today went, hopefully not the last time. She took a quick look around, wondering if they should sit down and talk or remain standing. It didn't really matter, but Samira wanted to be sure that they were comfortable as they were. Thinking no more of it, Samira tok a step closer to Calista, so that even with quiet voices they could still hear each other clearly.

"Ever since I left, I've kept in mind what you've been saying all this time," Samira began, her voice a low whisper. She ran a hand through her own white hair, trying to form the words she wanted to say. "I've been to a whole lot of places, and I keep feeling like something is wrong. What it is, I don't know, but the very fact that you seem the least affected by these changes makes me believe that..." Samira stopped, unwilling to speak more than that. If Papa Reynolds heard her speaking like this...she couldn't imagine what he would say. It was a scary prospect.

"There is something disconcerting about all of this, and I need your help to figure this out." Samira finished, pleading Calista with her eyes, ruby gems as they were.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Silver Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:47 pm

Calista's eyes widened to a whole new degree as Samira closed the, admittedly, small gap between them. However, nothing could compare to the shock that broke through her usual stoic as the card dealer bared the thoughts that had been plaguing her mind. The reason she had been gone all this time? Why, it was the very same reason Calista, herself, had been so adamant all this time about doing just that. Leaving. Finding answers. Doing what no one else in the town of Motz would!

Nevertheless, the young heiress forced the adrenaline rushing through her veins to a halt. Her face returned to the calm serenity everyone in town had grown accustomed to just as they had grown acquainted with the endless hours of night. If her father were to get on to the plans that had already started screaming themselves out in her head, there would be no going with Samira. As it were, there might not be any more Samira in her life. Period.

She mentally silenced the flurry of thought and spoke, "I appreciate your coming home; more than ever do I appreciate seeing your face and hearing your voice." Calista took a moment to pause, icy orbs darting to the door behind which she could feel a servant stopping all motion for the moment. Eavesdropping, no doubt. The young woman's eyes returned to her dearest friend, her veritable sister bound by everything but blood. "Now is not the time," she answered, her voice at a normal volume, "but I am certain that this engagement will be fruitful one." There suddenly came about a ruckus behind the doorway, and all at once Calista knew that her plan was in full motion. Nothing could stand in her and Samira's way now.

Still, she glanced back from the door (as her eyes had pinned to it when the servant had moved) and nodded slightly. From her lips came three mouthed words: Follow my lead.

No sooner had the servant vaulted off did Mr Reynolds "oh so casually" disrupt their little talk. He buzzed with an energy that abnormal, even for one as lively as him. Once again he moved them to the drawing room, and there they were served tea and crumpets composed of only the finest ingredients. The fourth hour turned quickly to the fifth and then the sixth. No sooner had they spent most of the day conversing over nonsense with the wealthy gentleman did they settle to dinner in the most extravagant dining room in all of Motz.

As more and more food piled itself onto the table, Mr. Reynolds chattered ceaselessly until finally he seemed about to burst with excitement. How such dull topics as knitting and molding had gotten him into such good spirits was beyond the waitresses and cooks around him, but Calista and Samira could only sit in silent knowing. The silence that followed for all of the three seconds Mr. Reynolds remained contained felt like bliss.

"Samira, my dear child, you mentioned nothing this morning of good news. Forgive my asking, but it has come to my attention that something extremely pleasing happened to you during your travels; please, share with us, who have treated you as only family could, what this was formally. My darling Calista is a proper confidante, yes, but such news should be relayed to all for proper celebration, no?"

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 3:32 pm

Samira, too, heard someone stop just outside the room. Had they heard what she said? No, that wasn't possible. Samira had spoken in a voice so quiet she was surprised that Calista had heard her properly. But Calista's next words made her turn red. And a pale face like her turning to the color of her eyes was something to behold. "Eh?" Samira barely managed to stutter out, but her words were drowned by the crashing outside the room. Engagement? Calista didn't mean...but the words she formed silently could only tell Samira one thing. Calista had planned this all along, and by now Papa Reynolds probably thought she was getting married.

Quietly, very quietly, Samira murmured a death wish over Calista for what she did. "Why couldn't you be the one getting married?" She forced herself to stay quiet, but it was already too late. Whatever Calista was planning was already set in motion. "This had better be a good plan, Calista," Samira grumbled. She'd play along, but she would have to think very quickly to figure out what to tell Papa Reynolds.

After becoming settled in (again) with Papa Reynolds at the table, Samira expected to hear the question come up. It didn't until a few hours later, which was a little later than Samira would have thought possible. Papa Reynolds wasn't exactly the type of person to contain his excitement over something, and though he was obviously very pleased, he was still holding himself back. His acting could definitely use some work.

"I, uhm," Samira began, stumbling over her words already as she began to turn red again. Not quite the color of her eyes, but only a few shades away. "I met a guy in Freccka, you see," Samira began, swallowing a lump in her throat as she tried to make herself speak. "He helped me out when I ran into some trouble a-and decided to accompany me when I told him I was out traveling. Things...happened...and he um...p-proposed." Samira spoke the last word softly, as if it was going to kill her. Never before had she been so embarrassed. She was going to kill Calista for this.

"His name is Rémi Victors," Samira, on the fly, came up with a French-sounding name. It was actually the name of a guy she had met in France, but they were not that close. Just acquaintances, is all. "Nothing's been planned...yet"

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Mr. Reynolds hung on Samira's every word, Calista sitting silently to the side memorizing the conversation verbatim on the off chance they might need it. The latter had to give it to her friend, despite the stuttering she seemed at least somewhat convincing. Of course, whether or not it worked was not a worry in the young girl's mind––her father had always been a tad gullible. From the corner of her eye, she could see that gears were spinning in his head; he was picturing every moment as Samira described it. Nothing, however, could prepare either of them for what happened when silence hung in the room again.

"Nothing planned?" he questioned with mock shock, a scary glimmer in his gray eyes. A smile framed his face as always. "That's wonderful, my child, simply wonderful!" he exclaimed gleefully, practically vibrating in his seats as he looked to Calista. She offered a smile, but he hardly noticed it; his eyes had already returned to Samira. "Leave it to me," he began cheerfully, "I'll take care of everything! The food, the decor, the reception. Everything. We can hold the ceremony right here; only the proper thing to do for our family, no?"

Calista thought she might die right then and there. She had figured her father would be ecstatic, but this far exceeded anything she could have thought of. And poor Samira! She had no right to be embarrassed like this, but there was little the young heiress could do. Unable to do anything, she glanced in Samira's direction apologetically.

"Here?" Samira squeaked, shaking her head quickly when she heard how high-pitched her voice had become. "I, uh...I guess we could have it here?" Samira questioned, her face turning an even darker shade of red. She glanced over at Calista to see the apology written across the girl's face. Samira gave her a look of murder that lasted for less of a split-second, quick enough for Calista to notice, but not enough for Papa Reynolds.

"But can we give it a little time?" Samira asked as politely as she could, "I don't want to rush into this. I-I mean, it's a long travel from here to there." Samira referred to the distance it took to get from where Freccka is to where they were in Reuss. It was quite a distance and would take more than a day or two on land. Plus, anything that Samira could do to delay the disappointing lie she was weaving from being revealed, the better.

There was the slightest flash of being hurt across Mr. Reynold's face, but as quick as it came, it was gone. "Of course, of course, my child," he responded swiftly, waving his arms to bring in several attendants. All at once the table cleared and Calista's father stood, smiling as always. "We can talk all about it tomorrow, my sweet little Samira," he added, moving to wrap her in a quick embrace. "I'll have my attendants draw up a list for your review tomorrow. For now, rest, my dear, I'm sure the excitement and travel has tired you. As always, you may stay with Calista in her room; if you need anything let one of the servants know."

And just like that, he was gone, off to plan a wedding that wasn't happening.

Samira accepted the embrace quietly, knowing that, unless Calista had something planned, there would be no getting out of this. Not with Papa Reynolds' enthusiasm and persistence. As soon as he was out of sight and earshot, Samira turned on Calista. She closed in on the girl until their faces were barely inches away. Samira made sure that the fire in her ruby stare was focused on Calista's own sapphire eyes. If looks could kill, Samira would have the whole house on fire.

"You'd better have a foolproof plan to get me out of this, Calista," Samira swore, holding a finger up and poking the other girl in the chest. "And you'd better count on it that retribution is coming. Marriage? That was the best thing you could come up with? You couldn't try something a little less embarrassing? You know how your father is, and when he finds out, he's going to hate me forever." Samira made sure to keep her voice low, but also made sure that her voice was a hiss. She was not pleased in the slightest.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Silver Sun Feb 16, 2014 6:16 pm

Not a sound filled the room. No footsteps, no dusting, no waiting upon, not even the usual sound of Calista's father moving about. If neither Samira nor Calista needed to breathe, the room would have been dead silent. Despite the finger pressed into her frame, Calista, for once, shared her father's wide smile. She said nothing for the longest time, merely smiling until, "do you not hear that?" Her voice held a hint of lightheartedness deep within. "None of the attendants are about," she explained after a moment, dropping the smile, but keeping her voice fairly upbeat and quiet.

Before Samira could answer her, however, Calista immediately grabbed a hold of her friend and dragged her off to her room, silently urging the girl to watch as none of the maids or butlers remained about the house. All of the servants––every single worker––had been gathered to Mr. Reynold's study to work out the details for the false wedding. Could Samira not see how wonderful this opportunity was? Sure, marriage might not have been the least embarrassing scape goat, but it worked miracles. The second the young heiress had pulled her friend into her room, she settled them near the windowsill.

"I apologize, sister, but can you not see? It worked wonders. The whole house will be confined to that one room straight through till morn!" she whispered excitedly, looking to the door out of habit rather than necessity. "This is our chance," she continued quickly, turning her head ever so slightly to a rather strong looking rope made out of linen sheets. "We'll never find anything cooped up in here, but now––right now––we have a chance to leave. We have a chance to, at the very least, scope out what these feelings are."

She delicately pushed the sill open, allowing the final beam of light to enter before it suddenly cut to cold blackness. No warning, just darkness. "If we find something to show my father he'll forget about this marriage in no time; if not, then I will think of something. I promise." Her lips finally came to a halt and she sat there watching her friend, hoping to whatever divine power remained above that she would be forgiven for acting so hastily.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 6:28 pm

"Yes, it's wonderful," Samira said, sarcasim poisoned in her voice. "Now Papa Reynolds is gonna hate me forever for lying to him like that. This isn't something to joke about, Calista! You know we can't ever come back here now, right?" Samira asked, watching as Calista completely ignored her and continued talking as if this was the greatest day of her life. Of course, being the only heir to the Reynolds family, she wasn't allowed much freedom. Given the chance, of course she would be excited, but...

"If all of the servants are in the study," Samira started, "couldn't we just walk out the front door?" The idea of jumping out the window using bedsheets as a rope seemed much too cliche for Samira. Especially with the lie about her getting married. When the cold entered the room, she immediately shivered. "This country is too cold. Lets just go and move south. The warmer it is, the happier I'll be." Samira shook her head, bringing her coat up around her shoulders. She was ready to go, staying here only risked them being unable to leave.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

"There are dogs," Calista retorted immediately, grabbing the rope quickly tying it to the end of her bed post. "Now quit complaining," she ordered, testing the rope before getting up onto the sill. When no direct response came immediately, the young heiress  began to shimmy her way down the amateur line and soon settled on the ground. "Come on!" she called up as loudly as she could without being overheard by someone or something else.

- - - - -

4 / 15 / 212X – 1st Hour of Night

With Calista's father completely unaware, the duo soon found themselves outside the mansion. No sooner than they had left its walls did they find themselves scurrying away from Motz like prisoners in a jailbreak. What they were looking for exactly could not be described, but for the longest time they wandered along the dirt path leading out of town, simply going wherever felt sort of right.

There was no noise save for the sound of their own breathing, had it not been for each others company the utter darkness would have been terribly frightening. Thankfully neither walked this path alone. Neither could admit they were scared, at least.... not as scared as they would have been entirely alone. Who wouldn't be? The stories of people traveling in the night for the very same purpose generally held misfortune.

Nevertheless, the duo remained strong, following their path until a random gust of wind blew through the night. Calista halted, a prickly feeling traveling all over her body––she could feel something terribly wrong coming from off the trail to the left. "Samira," she whispered, "I feel something." Without awaiting a reply as she was apt to do, the young heiress shuffled a few feet off the trail, the prickly feeling turning to a knot of nausea in her stomach. "Whatever it is, it feels awful. Can you feel it too?"

Little did she know, there were things waiting to go bump in the wretched night.

Things waiting for souls just like the two of them.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 7:13 pm

"What's that, Calista?" Samira asked, still a little salty from the whole exchange earlier and her...supposed...marriage. She shivered in the cold, they weren't properly dressed for this, Samira especially. She needed another three or four jackets to keep her satisfied. She kept telling herself that the reason she left was because she couldn't stand the incessant cold of this country. "You feel something? Because I feel something too. I feel cold." Samira laced her last word with as much poison as she could muster. "Ugh, what I would do for a mug of hot chocolate..." Samira murmured, mostly to herself.

She definitely did sense that something was off about the road. There were...things...waiting for them. Samira couldn't see them at the moment, thanks to the dark of the night, but she knew that they were there. She reached into her pouch and took out her deck of cards. "Stay behind me, sister," Samira said quietly, readying herself to draw.

Samira starts at C-8

"We can get you a new coat when we get to the next town," Calista muttered under her breath, knowing full well that Samira did not truly mean the harshness behind her words. The girl was just aggravated with their means of escape. She would cool off eventually.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 7:44 pm

Samira drew her first card. She was a lucky one, the first card was a three, her favorite number. She took a step forward, approaching a rock that was blocking the run-down road, expecting to find...well, she didn't know what she expected to find. But what she did find was something that did not appear normal. Some sort of quadruped that had been horribly disfigured and turned into something that was not normal.

"The hell is that thing?" Samira asked in shock, staring down at the spirit-thing in near horror. She readied her wrist and flicked her card at the spirit. Her first throw was always powerful, she could feel her wrist snap into place as her card shot from her hand. Normally, one wouldn't expect paper to do much against...well, anything, but Samira's throwing arm was particularly strong. Years of playing poker and blackjack made her that much more flexible.

"What?" Calista called out as Samira moved off the path. Whatever the card dealer had seen, it clearly was deemed the enemy––Samira would not have thrown one of her cards at it otherwise. Disregarding her friend's warning, the heiress moved in front of her only to get a clear look at some disfigured quadrupedal... thing. She cringed a bit at the sight of its bleeding frame––Samira's card had brutalized whatever the hell it was––but quickly whipped out a knife from the folds of her dress. In seconds it found purchase in the creature's body.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 8:16 pm

It was dead. At least Samira thought it was dead. The thing didn't move after Calista stabbed it. Of course it was her card that had done the most damage. These things weren't all that sturdy, whatever they were. Samira held up her cards, ready to attack again, but saw that one of the things had turned...somewhat intangible, and attacked Calista. Like that, Samira doubted she would be able to kill it, but there was still one other that she could sense hanging around.

"Calista, stay behind me," Samira said, putting a hand on her sister's shoulder. "You shouldn't be getting hit like that, let me soak up the damage these things are dealing." Samira wasn't a big fan of pain, but she wasn't scared of it. She didn't fear pain because her cards had a special magic to them, a magic that allowed her to steal the life force of those she struck. It seemed like a rather malicious ability, but Samira didn't dwell on that too much. She did what she had to to stay alive.

Samira held up a card and threw it into the dark. She had spotted the other spirit lurking about and with incredible aim, was able to pinpoint it's exact location. Samira didn't know if she hit it, but if she did, the thing would certainly feel the punch of her throw.

Out of nowhere a limb flew at her, stabbing her in the side without warning. "Gah!" Calista grunted, practically dropping the knife she had stabbed the other creature with in favor of bringing her hand to her fresh bruise. "Yeah... let's stick with that plan..." the young woman muttered, falling back behind her friend.

Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos Empty Re: Crisis Core: Resonance of Chaos

Post by Zerifachias Sun Feb 16, 2014 8:57 pm

Well okay. That didn't actually hurt at all. Samira was honestly surprised at how much these things...tickled...her. Their attacks were extremely lackluster and overall they didn't seem at all sturdy enough to survive more than two hits. The idea that damage could add up over time definitely applied to Calista, but it was a different story for Samira, as Calista would soon find out. Samira raised her hand, glancing at the seven card before throwing it into the body of the already-weakened spirit.

As soon as the card so much as touched the thing, a dark red substance immediately escaped from the card and leashed back onto Samira. Her snow-white hair glowed for an instant, and every one of her injuries disappeared entirely. So one hit was enough to restore her health to it's maximum level? That was almost disappointing. No remnant of stinging or pain remained.

Samira attacks (3)! 6 Atk DMG!

Samira will restore 5 HP from Blood Cards if successful!

Lucky Three activates on the next Basic Attack!

Calista casts Fortune Flare on 2! 8 Int Fire Damage! INTANGIBLE! Chance of Burn!

Seeing how Samira effectively finished off the last tangible creature in existence, Calista turned her attention to the equally creepy translucent one nearby. It twitched rather violently all of a sudden. Calista almost wretched. "I don't know what these things are, but they're starting to creep me out," she muttered, lighting a small burst of flame in the palm of her hand. A simple flick of the wrist and the ball of flame flew at the the creature, bursting upon impact and disrupting its spiritual form.
