Music: Longing Nostalgia
Spoiler:

A solitary clock hangs against a plasterboard wall, with its ticking the only other sound being heard in a dreary cube-shaped office, other than an old phonograph playing Classical music and a pen tapping in rhythm against a clipboard. The clipboard is being held by a woman in a blazer, who is sitting at the end of the room while looking over a set of papers. Everything about her is gray; her clothes, her skin, her hair… everything save for her contrasting red lips. In fact, everything in the office and around it are in perpetual monochromatic grayscale. This isn’t unusual however, it’s simply the way it has always been as far as anyone would ever be concerned.  The woman’s eyes are hidden, obscured by the swirling waves of her hair, the long glossy flocks ending in brazen points at the tips.

This was a world slumbering under a somber horizon, the ceaselessly achromous sky never knowing the meaning of night or day; imaginary words to all that heard them. Civilization had established an order, a society built upon labor with little time for recreation and art. For the most part, everything was under control. Everyone was under control. Those in power made sure aberrant anomalies in its population were erased and concealed from the public as to not disrupt the working flow of the citizens. A worker without distraction was a productive worker. This is what the people have always known, the concept hardwired into their morals.

The woman placed her clipboard to the side and crossed her legs, giving her attention to another woman who had just entered the room. “I’ve been expecting you,” the gray woman addressed her, motioning her hand to the chaise lounge next to her. “Please, make yourself comfortable.” The sole fact that her gaze was shrouded and fixed upon on the other woman was unnerving, though the music in the background wasn’t helping. She turned over at her clipboard once more. “So… your name is Uqwa?” she asked to confirm, her hand lifting up the page. The woman’s voice was apathetic and dull, almost mechanical in her deadpan voice, and yet the inflections in her voice appeared to bury a faint sadness from within.

Before the other woman had a chance to respond, the doorknob began to turn abruptly and a strange man peered in.  “…Are you ready to see me, doctor?” he interrupted. The woman became unresponsive as if she did not acknowledge him, the awkwardness becoming ever-increasing with each tick of the clock. “No, Mr. Scargrip. You are not scheduled for an appointment until tomorrow,” the woman in gray responded. “Oh… sorry,” he apologized as he excused himself from the room. “Now then,” the woman resumed. “You have come here seeking psychological counseling, and I am more than willing to accommodate you.

The gray woman pulled several sheets from the clipboard and handed it to the one named Uqwa. “If you would, please fill out the following form, marking your responses from ‘strongly disagree’, to ‘somewhat disagree’, to ‘neither agree or disagree’, to ‘somewhat agree’, or to ‘strongly agree’. You can have my word this will be the only form you will have to fill out in this session. Please answer truthfully as best you can as this will ease the process of the counseling.

Abrogation Empty Re: Abrogation

Post by Zerifachias Wed May 27, 2015 4:09 pm

"Yes, but it's pronounced Uqwa, not Uqwa," the young lady replied easily. She entered with little to no expectations, as everything here was all so very similar. Not a hint of color remained in the world, save for the doctor's red lips. Everything else was just gray, gray, gray. Even the flowers were gray. Uqwa knew this was an unchanging constant, but something inside her refused to believe that this was the true state of the world. And that something was driving her mad, mad enough to seek counseling.

Uqwa brushed aside her bangs with little effect. She had taken to styling her hair in a different manner every day to bring some contrast to the monotony in her life. It didn't help much. In fact, it almost made things worse, because she knew that it was the only thing about her appearance that could change. Without another word, Uqwa took the paper and pen from the psychiatrist and glanced down the page to read the questions listed. She had seen something like this before, on a personality test of sorts a few years ago. She began to wonder if any of the questions were similar to back then, and if her answer to them changed at all. She began writing.

1. You make friends easily.

-Disagree (Uqwa knew she didn't have many friends, but that was only because no one bothered talking to each other for some reason. She wasn't an unlikable person, it wasn't her fault everyone was gun shy.)

2. You feel a constant desire for something new.

-Strongly Agree (Uqwa saw no sense in lying to the psychiatrist. If she was truthful from the beginning, maybe, just maybe, her problems could be addressed. Patient confidentiality would hopefully protect her.)

3. Being adaptable is more important than being organized.

-Agree (Uqwa never saw the point in organizing something to be perfect in favor of finding new ways to do common tasks. If she could find a way to approach a problem in a different way and still succeed, she was happier than if she took the old route.)

4. Winning a debate is more important to you than the feelings of the others involved.

-Disagree (Uqwa wasn't necessarily interested in keeping the feelings of others unharmed so much as she disliked debating subjects. She much preferred people.)

5. You often feel the need to justify yourself to other people.

-Disagree (Uqwa answered to no man.)

6. Your keep your work environment tidy.

-Disagree (Wasn't this question already asked? About disorganizing or something? Uqwa was beginning to sense a pattern to these questions, and that unnerved her a little.)

7. You like being the center of attention.

-Agree (Having eyes on her was something she did enjoy a little bit. Even if she did something wrong, she enjoyed being the object of someone's attention, or a group of people. It meant she was different from the rest, she had some kind of individuality to speak of.)

8. You are more sensible than idealistic.

-Neither Agree nor Disagree (Uqwa knew herself to be a sensible kind of person, but she also held her ideals close to her heart. What was wrong with having ideals and the sense to not pursue the ones with a high failure rate?)

9. You normally make schedules for yourself.

-Disagree (Uqwa knew herself better than to make a schedule, for anything. She would put events and appointments on her calendar to remind herself, but other than that she never put anything down as law.)

10. You find it easy to relate to other people.

-Neither Agree or Disagree (It really depended on the person. This seemed more like a question to determine narcissism and empathy than anything else.)

11. Your mood can change rather quickly.

-Slightly Agree (Uqwa knew she was subject to bouts of happiness followed quickly by light sadness. It was not depression, nothing nearly as bad as that. But her mood swings usually only came once a month.)

Uqwa paused for a moment, looking down the list of questions again. She had to stop and think about each one as she read it, so this was taking a bit longer than she would have preferred. For a moment, Uqwa glanced up at the psychiatrist with her gray hair and red lips. She twirled the pen in her fingers and went back to her questions.

12. You rarely consider the effects your actions have on other people.

-Slightly Agree (Uqwa knew she wasn't that great of a person in general. She tended to hurt feelings more than mend them, and she was a bit oblivious to how other people reacted to what she did. Close friends though...if she had any, Uqwa would wager she would treasure more than anything in the world.)

13. You are often envious of others.

-Disagree (What was to be envious about? They have more gray than her? This seemed like a loaded question, but Uqwa answered honestly anyway. Hopefully it was the right answer.)

14. You are often lost in your own fantasies and ideas.

-Slightly Disagree (Uqwa had no inclination to daydream. She would prefer to see things as they were, and something within her told her that what she saw now was not how things were supposed to be. Maybe that was a fantasy all in itself, and maybe she was truly going mad, but that was what Uqwa felt.)

15. You prefer improvising over careful planning.

-Agree (Uqwa didn't feel particularly strong about this, but more so than not. Improvising was one thing she did every morning with her hair. Today she had dressed it up in a little bundle of fluffed strands with a bow keeping the ball together. Uqwa brushed a particularly long strand back over her ear, it was getting in the way.)

16. You often feel depressed and/or have thoughts of suicide.

-Strongly Disagree (Uqwa never once dreamed of suicide. It was the work of a coward, after all. Uqwa was no coward.)

17. Logic is more important than heart when it comes to making important decisions.

-Slightly Agree (Uqwa always took her feelings for granted in favor of level-headed decision making. Sometimes it made things worse. Sometimes it was the right decision. Sometimes it was both.)

18. You focus on possibilities rather than realities.

-Slightly Disagree (Here was another version of that question. How odd that there were multiples of these. Of course Uqwa cared about reality more than possibility. She was concerned that what the world showed now was not a reality, and that disturbed her greatly.)

19. You usually initiate conversations.

-Agree (Uqwa wasn't too talkative, but compared to others she was more likely to shoot first and ask questions.)

20. You are a relatively quiet and reserved person.

-Slightly Disagree (Quiet? Yeah, that was probably her. Reserved? Only when she was being quiet. She could gossip with a friend for hours if she had the chance to.)

Uqwa put the pen down and stared at her answers for a moment. It all seemed so meticulous to her, having to put ink to paper to give mediocre answers to monochrome questions. "Ma'am, I've finished." Uqwa said, handing the woman the paper she had so carefully filled out. She watched the psychiatrist carefully to see what happened next.

Uqwa gains the following A-Abilities.

Spoiler:

"My apologies, Uqwa," The psychiatrist gave the name the proper pronunciation this time and took the form to scan over it, clamping it back onto the clipboard when she was finished. "I think we are off to a great start. After all, just coming here shows your commitment and determination to the process." The woman uncrossed her legs for a second, only to cross them again with the opposite leg on top of the other this time. "Judging by some of your responses, I would guess that as of late you feel concerned that life isn't giving you everything it has to offer... and I get plenty of patients in the districts with such an ordeal," she hypothesized, conveniently failing to mention what became of such people. Patient confidentiality was indeed a double-edged sword. "Fear not... for at the end of this process, I assure you that you will feel as though everything is as it should be. At this point, she had been referring to the entire counseling as a "process" for a dubious amount of times. "Now then, in order to get this in motion, it would help a great deal for you to tell me about your life. Why don't we begin by examining when you started to feel this way?"

Music: Zero Horizon
Spoiler:

It had been a day like any other, and that was a day without a day. Had it not been for the system in place that recorded days in a full 99 hours, it would have been impossible to distinguish what segment of the day was which. It would just be an endless time frame spanning on indefinitely without end and without ability to reference historic or future tense. Supposedly, that would just be the same if applied to any chronological order of any other world if such worlds other than this one existed. Such a notion was preposterous and unheard of though, as everyone believed that nothing existed beyond their great cyanide sky. In a society driven entirely by labor, inhabitants would live in assigned apartment blocks according to the allocation of their profession's demographic. For the most part, the average citizen possessed a basic set of skills and would be located to work at mundane jobs such as construction or white-collar work in postal offices and corporations.

The kind of employment that would require an Executioner's set of skills would be the Precinct in District Alpha. Every now and then there would be situations where a citizen or otherwise would appear and behave outside of customary means to the extent where it would be considered disruptive if witnessed upon by society. They would need to be apprehended and eliminated permanently. Once dealt with, the Precinct would suppress the incident away from prying eyes as to avoid disturbing the working order, and the proper paperwork would be filed by The Chief and passed on to the necessary recipient... whoever that was.

The Chief himself was a scary man, towering above any average citizen with his bulking muscular build. It looked as though his fists could decimate any man to mere pulp with a single punch, with his cold demeanor alone ensuring that none of his underlings had any wayward thought to questioning his command. Though the majority of his work resided in the Precinct and its affairs, he was appointed the head of District Alpha. On this day, and on this particular hour, he had called Uqwa to his office. "Executioner" he addressed her without wasting a single moment, his voice bellowing such a baritone that it sounded almost like a low growl. "There  is  a  disturbance  on  18th  street.  Take  care  of  it  and  alert  the  sanitation  department  when  you  are  finished.  Go." With that, he waved Uqwa to leave his office and send her away on her job, using those few words.

Below The Chief's office and before the exit was the Precinct's staff office area next to the staff lounge, where those that didn't do work out in the field would sit at desks and file more paperwork. The room was filled with the sound of phones ringing, typing, and the noise of writing utensils scribbling against paper. The staff dressed in dress shirts and ties, ambling around to get to their stations while others stood in line in front of the coffee maker. They drank their coffee every day, at a specific points in the day, almost as if their lives depended on it. Everyone drank coffee, that's how it always was for them. The workers kept similar, flat hairstyles, and their eyes had dark circles around them like a pure metaphor for a crushed spirit. They seemed content at least; work was what they knew best.

The worker in front of the line turned and spotted Uqwa, stepping out to approach her. "Hello, Uqwa," he greeted with a slight wheeze. "Care for a daily cup of coffee?" He offered her a filled mug, the aroma of it suffusing into the air as it danced around the nostrils. The fragrance was crisp and slightly acrid, yet at the same time having the enticing savory redolence of the brew. In a way, the sensation it gave off insinuated that it was in some way synthetic... though nobody had ever taken notice.

"Yes sir," Uqwa confirmed, bowing her head slightly in recognition of her task. There would be no survivors. It would be a clean kill, like it always was. She left the office as quickly as she entered with her hand reaching back to touch the scythe she wore on her back. It was in compact mode, so it just looked like a metal backpack, but she knew, and everyone she worked with knew, what it was. She came across another worker, who greeted her by name and offered her coffee. Strange, she did not recognize this man, so how did he know her name?

"It's Uqwa, not Uqwa," Uqwa told him before holding up her hand to reject the mug. "And not today, I think. I must continue on to the front lines and deal with an immediate threat." Not to mention she hated this coffee. Every morning, people offered her coffee that she was forced to drink because 'everyone' did. She couldn't remember ever hating coffee so much before, but the stuff they served here at work seemed so horrid. "Besides, I had a standard brand this morning," Uqwa lied easily. That was something else she had gotten quite good at, lying without even breaking eye contact. It was important, especially in her line of work.

"Pardon me." Uqwa nodded to the man and shouldered her scythe-pack, giving body cues that she was not interested in conversation and wanted to leave.

“Oh… but how will you get through the day… without your coffee?” the voice of the man trailed weakly in the distance as Uqwa left him. 18th Street was not that far away from the Precinct, only residing a few blocks south of the station. In fact, the districts themselves were relatively small, as each one was connected to another by railway. As it had always been, the world as far as anyone knew was but a single city divided into four districts, governed by those appointed as “The Executives”. Beyond the city was uninhabitable terrain known as “The Wastelands”, where rumors foretell of unspeakable dangers that dwell in its vast mysteries. Nobody ever dared to venture into the Wastelands, as it was forbidden by The Executives themselves, and the Executives served the one and only entity known as “The Queen”. No citizen ever saw the face of the Queen, however the Executives would always insist that she indeed existed… no citizen ever dared to question the word of the Executives.

District Alpha spanned out into many sidewalks and roads, with various buildings lining up with them. Of course it had roads; however automobiles were only driven by those who could afford them… by which that meant that only the Executives drove them. A simple worker could never buy a car with the average salary, and any that could were questioned under the suspicion of illegitimately obtained funds with virtually every case resulting in their disappearance. The Executives had no time for lawbreakers, and order was of utmost importance. Without order, the foundation of society would cease to exist, and the rules of reality would be shattered.

It was always best to leave things be and not let one’s imagination ponder the reasoning for certain laws or strange happenings, such as why nobody ever buys newspapers, why all newspaper factories were abandoned, or how the newspaper racks always have newspapers with the current date on them despite nobody ever touching them. It is also nobody’s concern why sometimes faint screams can be heard from the fifteenth floor of the Polaris Apartment, when the entire floor is absolutely dilapidated and unoccupied with the elevators refusing to stop at it. Knowledge was a dangerous and unnecessary thing to have; work kept the mind busy.

Uqwa would finally arrive at her destination, with several children walked by in a single file line to their homes as they had just been dismissed from school. The Chief would never need to give a description on the targets as they were always easily identifiable by their behavior. This was proven once again as there was a worker in the alley between the grocery store and the Polaris Apartment shivering uncontrollably while he sat holding himself. “Too much work… work to death…” he murmured in fragments. “I don’t want to work anymore… there is more… more to living… than work.” As he spotted Uqwa, his head turned up at her and his pupils narrowed in fear. “Oh no… they’ve come for me… they know… I can’t… I can’t die here…”

The man rose to his feet as his eyes rolled to the back of his head; his mouth frothing a putrid smoke. He advanced towards Uqwa with the obvious intent to attack, his arms reaching for her. The man no longer spoke any words but instead let out lengthy, low groans. Like citizens, it wasn’t like Executioners to question the nature of their work as they all complied to The Chief’s orders. The Sanitation Department that consisted of one man reinforced the compliance by advising against wandering thoughts, though he was ironically one of the city’s many unquestioned mysteries as well due to the fact that nobody other than the Executioners and The Chief ever saw him. The target would inch closer and closer towards Uqwa, showing no signs of stopping.

Uqwa walked distant from the children, giving them enough space to pass by in their line. She hoped in her heart of hearts that her target was not among them. Today was a fortunate day for her, in that case, as none of them showed any signs of being Divergent. Not today, at least. But perhaps one day she may have to go after a child, one whom was unruly and sowed discord among its peers. Then she, or one of the other Executioners would be given the order to dispatch the child. Uqwa feared, but put the thought out of her mind. Fear was an illusion, there was peace in stability and order.

Uqwa heard the heavy panting before she saw the source. Down that alley there, in between the abandoned apartment complex and the store. Uqwa slid into the alley easily and immediately spotted the Divergent character. It was clear his mind was broken, even if there was a way to calm him, he would never be the same. He would be one to cause chaos in order if left unattended. Uqwa knew this was not the right way, so she felt little remorse for the man as she took the metal pack off her back and watched it transform into her scythe.

"Divergent, the reaper has come for you. Do not fear, do not struggle, and your death will be painless and swift," Uqwa promised. She glanced at the length of her weapon and the distance between the buildings in the alley. She would have enough room, more than enough, to use her weapon at the longest possible reach and swing. Good, she didn't want to chip her blade or the buildings. Uqwa gripped her scythe and readied herself to fight.

Uqwa starts in G-3

The Aberrant showed no signs of hesitation as if all reasoning had left it. The noxious fumes continued to billow from its mouth as any remaining semblance of humanity faded away. Nobody seemed to know what would cause such a thing to happen, and nobody wanted to ask. Executioners were trained to kill without a second thought, and a second thought is something they would never give. It wasn't important to know; it was only important that they did their job, just like everyone else. After all... how could anyone in this world function without being told what to do?

Uqwa took a deep breath, then let it all out at once in a big sigh. She tightened her grip on her scythe and readied herself for the battle. It was always something new and unexpected with Divergent, she could never tell what one of them was going to do. Sometimes they chased her and fought her, trying to kill her before she executed them. Sometimes they just sat there, blank, waiting, eyes devoid of any semblance of humanity. As to why this happened to only some of them...Uqwa had no way of knowing. She only hoped she would never become like that, for her own sake.

Seeing that this one was clearly going to fight back, Uqwa prepared. "So you resist? Then come!" Uqwa shouted at the clearly Divergent man. He would come to her first, then she would rend his body into pieces. Only two pieces, hopefully. She shuddered to think of Divergents who kept chasing after her, even after she split them in twine, like they did in her dreams.

The coffee didn't help.

Uqwa waits.

Enemy Phase 1

The Aberrant wasted no time in advancing, swaying clumsily as it walked. When it got close enough to Uqwa, it began retching out a cloud of the toxic gas that would burn at the touch. The vile smoke was almost tangible, like it was sandpaper grating away rigorously at the skin. The Aberrant would not respond to any of Uqwa's words... no Divergent ever did.

Uqwa put her hand to her mouth to avoid inhaling any of the gas, but that didn't do her any good. The Executioner could still feel her body weaken a little from the smog. Cyanide. She should have known as much. Protecting her lungs wouldn't do anything to guard against this kind of smoke. Uqwa put her hand back onto her scythe and held it up above her head, sending her own strength into her weapon as the black scythe that caused it to pulsate. She then swung her blade around her body, hitting the Divergent with the shock of her energy.

Uqwa wasn't finished with just that. She stopped her scythe short and switched the blade around to swing it back in the opposite direction. Blade met flesh in a clash of blood and the sound of steel on bone. Uqwa saw the blood flow, saw it splatter on the ground and paint the street alley.

Enemy Phase 2

The gas persisted in its violent surge, continually spreading its harmful toxins. Though Cyanide gas in this world was breathable, too much exposure to it would take its toll. The Divergent let out cries of pain with each strike Uqwa landed on it, with the second attack more severe than the first. The staggering only lasted a moment before it would attempt to retaliate. Uqwa blocked the attack with the metal pole connected to her scythe, but some of the attack still managed to get to her. That was fine, it hardly did a thing to her, even in her weakened state. Uqwa eyed the beast and shifted to the side in a quick hop, then doubled back and brought her scythe along with her this time, slamming the flat end of her blade into the side of the Divergent's head. That was bound to cause some damage, Uqwa didn't like pulling her punches in the first place.

It was becoming angry. The Divergent let out an unsettling shriek before the sound of its knuckles crunching painfully in its hands creak unnaturally, until the interdigital folds of its fingers split open releasing more noxious gas. The gas seeped out and formed into discernible shapes that resembled two-dimensional squares made outlined in a spectrum of color. These squares then began to launch towards Uqwa at high speed, the sharpness capable of cutting through skin.

Uqwa grunted a little bit from all the hits. She knew that this one would have something different up its sleeves, but this was something she was...not at all expecting. Still, there was no way she could lose here. She was too strong, her scythe was doing good work, though the Divergent seemed to be resisting her attack at certain intervals. Her first attack didn't hurt it much, but her next attack seemed devastating in comparison. Uqwa gripped her scythe tightly, she had to figure out when it was weakest.

Uqwa lifted her scythe and sent it straight down into the Divergent's shoulder. If it was not fast enough to dodge, the attack would crush into its shoulder. With this, she would be able to see if it could resist her attack, or fall to it. She also needed to think about taking a whetstone to the blade after this fight.

The Divergent's skin began to stiffen before the landing of Uqwa's attack, allowing it to withstand more of the pain that was being dished out upon it. The creature's voice bellowed through breaths of toxic smoke, while it hobbled towards Uqwa with unyielding malice. The blood on its face continued to drip down and paint its appearance until it had lost all semblance of physical humanity. Once in range, the Divergent would strike her with its stark hands.

She was right. Oh was she right. Even before she hit the abomination, she could see its flesh harden in response. Her scythe was able to penetrate its tough skin, but not nearly enough to cause significant damage. However, over the course of the fight, Uqwa knew the damage the once-man was taking. She calculated it all in her head, and she knew that this would be the last turn. She put herself at a distance from him, her maximum range where she could really swing her weapon's sharp blade around.

Her blade pulsed with the energy she sent through it. Uqwa swung her scythe around her body, a powerful shockwave overtaking the area surrounding her and impacting her foe. Follow up, Uqwa thought to herself, spinning her blade and her heel around. With great force behind her attack, Uqwa cut through the opposition, with full intent to knock the man's head off his body.

With the final strike, the creature wailed out one last cry before plummeting to the floor, completely motionless. The gas that had been perpetually spewing from its body had ceased as well, yet the ground was painted in the bloodshed. Blood covered the entire body of the Divergent in a horrific display, with one of its eyes still untouched and wide open, staring back at Uqwa. It could say nothing in its corrupted and lifeless state, but the eye continued to gaze into her... forlorn and yet curious. To be an Executioner was to have a heart nobody could ever know, forever destroying the cold truth with the even colder breath of death. Not a second too soon, Uqwa would hear a vehicle approaching... it was him.

Music: The Janitor Arrives
Spoiler:

A large garbage truck pulled up and parked by the curb, as the door opened to reveal a tall man in a bland, gray smock. His eeriness reached a multitude of levels as The Janitor was the sole man of the sanitation department and always showed up with impeccable timing whenever an Executioner finished their job, and The Janitor always did so without the need to be alerted. He always knew. Half of his face always seemed to be concealed behind a shade, and one could only imagine how a man of his enigmatic presence came to be. The Janitor wheeled out a mop trolley up by the corpse, and he dragged the lifeless Divergent and tossed it into the back of his truck. He then went back up to the mop trolley and began his work cleaning the blood. "Your job isn't finished yet," he claimed, addressing Uqwa though he was not facing her. "There is a situation at the Calvera Apartments that require your investigation. You know what must be done."

The Calvera Apartment as Uqwa would know, was not far from the location where she was currently at. It was a towering building sitting amidst a neighborhood that was nearly demolished for an abandoned construction project. The inhabitants had long since moved closer to the district's center in the housing options they were provided, so it would be a surprise to see anyone that was still in the old neighborhood. Then again as all Executioners knew, life was full of surprises. The apartment itself was a few blocks just west of 18th Street, surrounded by debris from collapsed buildings and the wistful melancholy of its shadow was cast upon the landscape where memories no longer spoke. It was forgotten, so what business did any creature have with it?

As the scene settled and the horrid corruption beast fell before her final strike, Uqwa felt a sudden unease overcome her senses. Just as the beast was falling she could smell its putrid final breath and heard the screeching of wheels. The janitor. Of course. He always came after Executioners finished their job. He always showed up on time, the exact moment the target fell. Uqwa at first wondered how he always managed to do it, but those thoughts were lost to her as normal occurrence now. He sometimes came with a second job, and Uqwa knew what to do once she received her orders.

"Understood." Uqwa spoke shortly, not bothering to thank him for his work or the message. This was not a job to be thankful for. And yet, thankless did not even begin to describe it. The Executioner tapped the ground with the pole of her scythe, causing the machine to compress and slide back into itself until it became an innocent, full-metal backpack. Uqwa shouldered her packed weapon and left the vicinity for her next objective.

All in a day's work.

Upon arrival of the destination, the building stood as it always did, a lost remnant amongst the wake of a fallen memory.

Music: Calvera Apartment
Spoiler:

The lone monument was still intact, held together by worn bricks. Everything about it seemed normal, other than the fact that strange noises could be heard from within. Through the windows, Uqwa could catch glimpses of figures in motion, heading towards the stairwell and ascending the steps. If one were to guess, it looked like they were making their way to the rooftop. Uqwa had the option to barge in through the front and begin apprehending the figures, however another option presented itself in the form of the ladders outside on the side of the buildings that would lead all the way to the top. Unfortunately, The Janitor was never specific in exactly what the disturbance was, as his cryptic messages often made things more confusing than they needed to be.

>Use the front door and confront the figures.
>Climb the ladders to the roof.

Uqwa sighed a little. Her work would never be done at this rate. If she climbed to the top of the building, she might be able to cut off the ne'er-do-wells on the roof and possibly even save some time. But if there were others involved and they escaped while she made a ruckus up top, or if they came to the aid of the others, she would be put in a bind right quick. While she didn't like the idea of dealing with these guys one floor at a time, she had to be thorough.

Even if it meant risking a few other lives. If the life of even one deviant escaped from her hands, they would just spread their corruption and try again. She had to be thorough. Uqwa reached for the door in front of her.

The door opened without resistance, and the main lobby of the apartment was well-kept, save for the dilapidated walls and dirt-stained flooring. There were only three figures remaining on the ground floor, and as it turned out they appeared to be normal citizens dressed in the approved attire for normal citizens as mandated by the executives. Upon closer inspection, their eyes seemed dull (duller than the already insipid eyes of Uqwa's coworkers) and almost lifeless, as if they were in some sort of trance. They did not turn around to face Uqwa nor did they acknowledge her presence. The people walked slowly, one by one up the stairs. The first man did so, and then the second. The last man momentarily turned and looked in Uqwa's direction and stared briefly before turning away, stepping foot on the first step of the stairs with the intent of following suit of the others. The apartment had six floors, and it was inconceivable for the elevator to still be in working order. Strangely enough, the beverage vending machine near the counter was still lit and plugged in, letting off a low hum which indicated it was still functional.

"Wait!" Uqwa called out, seeing the dim lit eyes but not really caring about what it might mean. These were not people who were Aberrant, not yet anyway, and unlikely to become such. Uqwa took hold of her scythe anyway, but did not unlock it, not yet. She ran after the man as he went to the stairwell. She quickly reached the man and quickly took hold of his wrist to stop him in his tracks. Uqwa took out a small card from her pocket and showed it to the man. "Uqwa Getsig, Executioner. I have questions, and I expect them answered.

"First question, what's going on here? Where are you all going?"

Music: Inspiring Call
Spoiler:

The man seemed to ignore Uqwa's presence, tugging away as if he did not know he was being grabbed. "The voice... the voice of green... it is calling. So soothing... I must go to it... it is calling," he droned listlessly. The subdued voice repeated the words over and over, while continuing to tug himself free from the grasp he could not acknowledge. Whatever was on the roof had some sort of control over these men, causing them to drift towards its source like a beacon. Despite the fact that these men were just about as dull and nearly lifeless as any average citizen, the behavior was unusual. At least a normal citizen would have responded more if Uqwa were to speak or interact with them... in the rare case Uqwa would want to. Nobody ever seemed to have anything interesting to talk about, it was always about their monotonous pencil pushing jobs and nothing else. That was the way things were meant to be, it seems. That was considered... normal. The remaining drifters seemed to have long disappeared out of sight, as they were presumably at the roof at this point.

Uqwa did not release the man from her grasp. Whatever was happening up on the roof was surely something very sinister to cause this in what was supposed to be a "healthy" person. The definition of normality changed long ago, and this man did not fit that description any longer, but he was not divergent, not yet. If Uqwa let him go to the rooftop...no, there was no point. She could get there by herself, and the best option would be to make sure this man could not reach the roof at all, whether by his will or not.

Uqwa yanked the man into her arms, tightening her arms around his neck in a sleeper's hold and holding him there until his body went limp. Then she grabbed a bit of rope from her toolkit and quickly tied the man's arms and legs together, not caring about the efficiency of the knot. He could not even pay attention to her, how could he then pay attention to a bit of rope? Uqwa left him at the foot of the stairs, he would be safe here. She hoped.

"Sorry about that," Uqwa told the so far still-unconscious man. "But keeping at least one of you alive is better than letting you go up there." Uqwa hesitated no longer and ran up the stairs, taking three steps at a time until she reached the very top and put her foot to the door of the rooftop with a powerful kick.
