Marks of Eternia

The Kingdoms of Volentia and Livadi. Born to the world of Materstella and nurtured on the six islands of the southern Calestis Sea mostly untouched by tragedy or chaos. The people of these kingdoms live peacefully, although not solely of their own accord. Truth be told, the Magic Council operates as a neutral third party––born of a people long since lost to time––which keeps the two kingdoms from war. Without their influence the conflict would certainly feed the humble lands to the ravenous oceans that surround them; armageddon ensured by the mystical forces of Eternia, the true dimension of the world, once stirred by the powers of aggression.
The humans, however, have little to fear. In such an era of tranquility, the mysterious energies that swell beneath the rocky surface of their shores and the rolling waves have no reason to bring about the downfall of man. Their worries instead lie with the dangers that toil in their homelands and in the oceans. Monsters and dangerous creatures of all sort have always been an issue for both Kingdoms––for many years the people of these societies cowered in fear that their lives would come to an abrupt end at the fangs or claws or even ether of these malevolent beings. But fear would bring them strength.
In the earliest annals of their history, both Kingdoms reacted to the then-rising populations of monsters. Livadi gathered all who could muster the courage and with rudimentary weapons drove back the beasts that threatened their homes. As time passed this practice became standard and today every citizen of the Livadien Kingdom joins the military at the tender age of fourteen. For seven years they train their minds and bodies to quickly eradicate the creatures they once feared. Many continue their service after their required term––many of the people find themselves empowered by the strength they've honed themselves. No one from Livadi likes to accept help when it comes to a matter of self-defense.
Volentia, on the other hand, took to their faith and found an answer in the Heavenly Father and his Earthly Beloved, Ptrio and Maati. With their blessings, the people of the early Volentiam Kingdom smote the beasts from their homeland and raised a grand castle at the site of the initial purification. Castle Valencia, as it is known today, became a safe haven for all the people as the Heavenly Father himself raised a great wall which would keep them protected from the monster threat. However, when the wall was finally built he left one of his followers, a man who's name is disputed among the Ancients, to do two things. First, he was to venture to the land of the Magi far west from his new dwelling on Paterra, where he learn their ways of combat. Secondly, he was to take their teachings and construct a grand Academy for the purpose of training the future Guardians of the land when the great wall would not alone stand as mankind's only aegis.
That man agreed. It is in the halls of his Academy that our story begins.

Dawn. In the courtyard of the Academy for the Future Guardians of Volentia, a lone woman stood watching as the sun free of its cloud cage in the east. Its first golden rays danced through the air and swept across her face; a cooling breeze filled with the smell of the sea––even this far inland––washed across her body, blowing a single loose strand of the tall woman's dark brown hair free from the confines of a neatly crafted bun. Her gauntleted hand drew it back into place, settling on the hilt of a sword at her hip.
"Today is the day," she said aloud to no one, a small smile gracing her strong face. It fit nicely despite the unusual nature it seemed to give off in contrast to her powerful figure. Her dark blue-green eyes drifted from the rays of glorious golden light and landed on the dormitory to her right. Her smile widened just a bit. "My first class' trial shall begins in an hour," she continued proudly––no one could hear the slight ring of her voice. The voice of a woman who could hold no greater happiness. "They shall pass," she stated, seemingly in conclusion. "I'm certain of it."
A single rooster cawed the hour as loud as its little heart would allow it to.
In the boys' section of the dormitory, a single groan of discontent echoed from under a sea of blankets. Disgruntled murmurs of needing more rest and doing anything for five more minutes of nighttime wafted from the source––these of course were met with a sigh from the other inhabitant of the particular dorm room. The boy in question, who had been up at least a half an hour before the rooster had even bothered to make a peep, currently stood at the sink splashing cold water on his face. He had heard his roommate's moans of protest and couldn't believe that the usually energetic nature of his... whatever they were... was absent on today of all days.
"Come on, Jason," the boy remarked sourly, drying his face with a cloth. "Cut the crap and get up already." This, of course, was met with a pillow tossed haphazardly in his direction. The slender teen dodged it easily and crossed his arms over his chest.
"What did I tell you about my name, Parks?" the boy still beneath the sheets retorted, his hand returning to his cocoon of warmth. The other boy, named Parks, shook his head.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever," he said flippantly, waving his hand as if to push the topic away. He turned his attention away from the half-asleep mass of sheets and focused his bright green eyes on the mirror in front of him. He took a nearby comb to his hair, gently undoing the unnatural tangles and knots created by his rather restless night. "Listen, I don't care what you want to be called right, get up. Our exam is in approximately forty-five minutes and I'm not going to get in trouble because you're late." The boy expertly parried the resulting pillow, grasping it himself and chucking it back at the offending hand. He slipped the comb back into its original resting place.
"Wait. . . What?!"
All of a sudden a flurry of movement––the sheets rose from the bed wrapped around the mostly naked teenage boy who now seemed fully alert. "The exam's today?!" he half-shrieked, eliciting a chuckle from the scrawnier, shorter boy who now stood right in front of him.
"Yep," he said through a giggle. "Wouldn't want to upset Headmaster Alessia, would you?"
"Of course not!" the taller boy retorted, scrambling to throw on clothes as he unraveled the sheets from around his toned figure. Parks glanced at him briefly, a slight hint of appreciation in his eyes and a reddening of his cheeks as the sheets slipped revealing that the older teen was not mostly naked, but rather fully naked. And struggling to put pants on his torso at the moment. When the older boy suddenly whipped around to face him, Parks quickly averted his gaze.
"T-those are your pants, Jace," he offered awkwardly, choosing to retie his shoes although they certainly didn't need it.
"Shit!" Jace cursed, completely ignoring the fact that he was showing off his assets. He struggled to get the garments off of himself for a few minutes until finally he managed to slip free. With a little more tact, he shrugged into his clothes properly and quickly finished his morning routine. By the time he had wrapped his signature red headband around his head, Parks incredible blush had faded. "You ready to go or what?"
"Uhh... sure..."
The duo swiftly left their rooms and reported to the training grounds, finding themselves as the first ones there. Curious.

A light from the outside shone through the tiny crack in the window to lie upon the face of a girl. Morning's first light was what awoke the creature lying motionless in her bed. Quietly, she rose and gave a silent yawn. For a moment, she paused, listening to the breathing around her, brown eyes slowly but surely waking. She could see much, even in the little light available to her. Quietly she shifted herself around and placed her bare feet on the ground, slipping into pink slippers that lie at her bedside. On the other side of the room, two other girls were asleep in their own beds, bunk beds. They had the only three-person dorm in the academy, lucky them. As the older of the three, she got the single bed. That, and she had the habit of waking up very early.
Alisentra, though preferring to be called Ali, quietly moved to her drawers, where she found a sleeveless shirt and light track pants to put on. As silently as she could, she removed her pajamas and put on the light clothes, strapping on sturdy, but breathable, shoes. She did not like to wake the other two girls up while she did her morning routine, and would much prefer having a single room, but that was not possible at the moment. Still, she usually managed to slip away without either of them waking.
Ali came outside and breathed in deeply, taking in all the fresh morning air, crisp and cool, even in summer. Then, she shook her hair, tying it all up into a bun so it would not get in her face, and took off at a light jog. If it was up to her, she would run for hours on end, every day if she could. Years of conditioning and training gave her incredible stamina, and her perseverance was nothing to laugh at either. Confidence in her own abilities was what drove her so fearlessly, but on occasion that confidence would fail her when she approached tasks she was not ready for.
Still, Alisentra knew now that there was very little she could not do, and even less she could not do with assistance. She was more ready than she could ever be. Today was the big day after all, and just knowing that made her smile. Ali was not nervous, not in the slightest bit. Why should she be? She's passed every test the academy has thrown at her, despite her hiccups. But every mistake is a lesson, and Ali drilled herself until she could no longer stand so that she would never make the same mistake again. So far, it has worked out.
Alisentra watched the sun rise on the horizon, and after the second loop, decided she should cut her run short on account of it being a different day. It was a shame, she wasn't even sweating yet, but felt comfortably warm despite the chill in the air. She returned to the dorm room quietly, in case the others had not yet wakened. Once there, she stripped herself naked, throwing everything into a small basket with her family's insignia of a howling wolf engraved on the cover. Her parents loved to put their family's coat of arms on everything. She even had a tattoo on her chest, just above her bosom, depicting the very same wolf. Ali disappeared into the showers, still warm from her run but slowly feeling the chill creep up her legs and arms.
Ali came back, all wrapped in a pink towel and running a thick comb through her long, brown hair. The length of it reached her breast, but she never let it past that point. It would have to be cut soon, she realized. Ali glanced over at the bunks and paused, cringing as she tore through a knot in her hair. Despite all her training and conditioning, hair knots still hurt like a bitch. She would wake them once she was ready to go. They still had over an hour before they were required, she didn't want to wake either of them too early, lest they become grumpy with her.
Ali donned her favorite suit of armor, a light steel that favored shoulder, breast, and hip protection than her sides or stomach, where mail rested. She clipped her sword belt around her waist, which kept the armor from shifting too much, and grabbed onto the sword, sheathed by her bedside. Just in case, she packed two knives as well, one on the right side of her belt, and another one, much smaller, to her leather boot. Ali attached the sheath to her belt and tapped the steel hilt. Perfect.
"Are you two awake yet?" Ali dared to ask, her voice gentle and sweet, like a mother whispering to her children. "There is but a little over an hour left before we must be at the training grounds for our exam."

Not long after the rooster's sound the relative peace and quiet of the girls' dorm was shattered as if someone took a hammer and slammed directly into it. Loud, quick footsteps and even louder, frantic shouting could be heard coming from one of the rooms.
"Oh no! I'm gonna be late! No! No! No! Miss Alessia is gonna fail me! What do I do? I'M GONNA FAAAAAAAAIL!"
The source of all the commotion was a short girl by the name of Tonelli Fairfield, barely reaching five foot if even that, scampering around her room scrambling to get herself ready for the day. She had on a white shirt that looked haphazardly tossed on, with numerous wrinkles and folds and several buttons near the top and bottom being left unbuttoned revealing her creamy white skin. Below was a skirt also unbuttoned, causing it to hang loosely off one side, remaining in place for the moment but threatening to fall down at any time.
Tonelli's arms were raised running a brush through her long, black hair. It fell all the way down to her hips yet still remained smooth and soft, bearing a luster that almost radiates health and showed just how much effort the small girl put into its care. It was for good reason too. Given her height and her...lacking figure it was the only part of herself she could be proud of.
Her twin-colored eyes darted frantically around the room with her head spinning as she tried to recall what else she needed. Clothes, hair, the silver gauntlet that rested upon her desk, her naked roommate putting on armor, her jacket- Wait, what was that second-to-last one?
Tonelli stopped her scampering around as her gaze fixed on Ali showing a look of curiosity and confusion. "Ali? What are you-" The smaller girl began before stopping when her roommate spoke, her expression turning from worried and confused to one of surprise, "A-An hour? I thought our exam started when the rooster crowed!"

A nightly commune with the stars. The moon wasn't full, and what a shame it was, but the stars always shone so brightly in the night sky over the dormitory, and well over the entire campus. It was such a sight to see, but so many had no appreciation for it. A lone woman sat perched upon an edge of the roof of the dormitory building, looking out over a magnificent courtyard--perfectly kept sidewalks, roomy ornate wooden benches, beautiful flowers that drank in the light of the celestial bodies. The woman, Sophia, drank in this light as well, holding tight her quaint pink garments, their long sleeves with their white frills keeping her warm in the chill of the night. The high breeze whipped her long red skirt about, the frills beneath it brushing her legs and the elegant floral markings sewn onto it dancing whimsically. She regretted not tying up her straight black hair this night, but she liked to keep it down. She played with a strand thoughtlessly as she gazed up at the sky.
This was a nightly thing. How could Sophia learn the secrets of the Astros if she did not commune with the stars? Her instrument, a globe-like object with a golden skeletal frame and a black light hovering in the center, sat beside her on the rooftop. She let the hair slip from her grasp and picked it up--her star globe. She raised it up and pinpoints of light appeared on an invisible spherical surface. It caused her to smile. "How will the test go tomorrow, o great Astros? Will you peer on my trial through the daylight sky? Will you remain in my heart and give me strength?" Her voice was soft and tender, and her soul quivered with the amount of faith she had in the stars. She felt a warmth in her heart; that would be her answer. There would be no mistaking it. She was to pass this test. She couldn't help but feel excited about it.
Calmly, Sophia set her star globe down on the rooftop once more, the pinpoints of light vanishing one by one until it returned to its original appearance. From her vantage point, she noticed Alisentra was departing for her morning run. Sophia's dark red eyes kept trained on the woman as she jogged. This was also a routine thing. This woman could run for hours and hours. Sophia found it a curious thing, but supposed it was why Alisentra was in such good condition. Sophia decided that the stars had received enough attention. Perhaps she would watch Ali as she continued on and on. A smile set on Sophia's face as she did, not a thought troubling her mind. It was hypnotizing. Unfortunately, it did not last that long this morning. Perhaps Ali was reserving herself for the impending exam.
"Oh, I haven't slept tonight." Ali went inside so Sophia redirected her gaze towards the sky. How could she sleep when she had to commune with the stars? And her classes kept her busy during the day? She blinked wearily but smiled nonetheless. "Ah well, it will be okay as it always is," she sighed contentedly and stood up. She remained standing, gazing up at the stars for a little while longer before deciding it was probably time to head down. Crouching slightly, she leapt off the roof and gently floated down, touching the ground in a smooth wave of light. She entered the building and returned to her room, although she was quickly made aware of some commotion coming from her room that sounded an awful lot like Tonelli.
Sophia opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind her, her star globe tucked under her arm. "Of course I'm awake." Sophia meandered over to the bed. She claimed the top bunk seeing as how she had no use for it; it would be easier for Tonelli to use the bottom one. She climbed up the ladder and pulled back the blankets to not reveal a body, but a mass of pillows. She cautiously stepped back down the ladder and focused her gaze on Alisentra. "Shouldn't you know by now, Ali?" That warm smile she had earlier while watching the girl appeared on her face. "I believe there is great luck on our side. The stars have said as such." She gave her star globe a gentle trusty pat.
This was a nightly thing. How could Sophia learn the secrets of the Astros if she did not commune with the stars? Her instrument, a globe-like object with a golden skeletal frame and a black light hovering in the center, sat beside her on the rooftop. She let the hair slip from her grasp and picked it up--her star globe. She raised it up and pinpoints of light appeared on an invisible spherical surface. It caused her to smile. "How will the test go tomorrow, o great Astros? Will you peer on my trial through the daylight sky? Will you remain in my heart and give me strength?" Her voice was soft and tender, and her soul quivered with the amount of faith she had in the stars. She felt a warmth in her heart; that would be her answer. There would be no mistaking it. She was to pass this test. She couldn't help but feel excited about it.
Calmly, Sophia set her star globe down on the rooftop once more, the pinpoints of light vanishing one by one until it returned to its original appearance. From her vantage point, she noticed Alisentra was departing for her morning run. Sophia's dark red eyes kept trained on the woman as she jogged. This was also a routine thing. This woman could run for hours and hours. Sophia found it a curious thing, but supposed it was why Alisentra was in such good condition. Sophia decided that the stars had received enough attention. Perhaps she would watch Ali as she continued on and on. A smile set on Sophia's face as she did, not a thought troubling her mind. It was hypnotizing. Unfortunately, it did not last that long this morning. Perhaps Ali was reserving herself for the impending exam.
"Oh, I haven't slept tonight." Ali went inside so Sophia redirected her gaze towards the sky. How could she sleep when she had to commune with the stars? And her classes kept her busy during the day? She blinked wearily but smiled nonetheless. "Ah well, it will be okay as it always is," she sighed contentedly and stood up. She remained standing, gazing up at the stars for a little while longer before deciding it was probably time to head down. Crouching slightly, she leapt off the roof and gently floated down, touching the ground in a smooth wave of light. She entered the building and returned to her room, although she was quickly made aware of some commotion coming from her room that sounded an awful lot like Tonelli.
Sophia opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind her, her star globe tucked under her arm. "Of course I'm awake." Sophia meandered over to the bed. She claimed the top bunk seeing as how she had no use for it; it would be easier for Tonelli to use the bottom one. She climbed up the ladder and pulled back the blankets to not reveal a body, but a mass of pillows. She cautiously stepped back down the ladder and focused her gaze on Alisentra. "Shouldn't you know by now, Ali?" That warm smile she had earlier while watching the girl appeared on her face. "I believe there is great luck on our side. The stars have said as such." She gave her star globe a gentle trusty pat.

Alisentra watched as Tonelli, the poor girl, rushed around the room fretting and worrying. She was glad to give the girl some pause, at least. Ali walked over to the girl, who was much shorter than she, and knelt down in front of the girl. "We have time, Toni," Ali cooed with a smile. She reached up and fixed the girl's buttons and straitened her skirt. "There, no need to worry, okay?" Ali knew not to touch the girl's hair. She took such good care of it, and Ali did not know much about hair-care, only enough to keep her own manageable.
And of course Sophia wasn't asleep. That girl hardly ever did sleep. Alisentra worried, but her worry seemed a bit misplaced. The girl went by well enough with little to no sleep. Ali herself wasn't exactly a night owl like her, but she did not tend to sleep for very long. "I really should know by now, shouldn't I, Sophia?" Ali sighed and pushed herself back up, straightening her back so her posture did not stress her. "And though it is nice to know we have a bit of luck on our side, I think it's our own abilities that will see us through this."
Alisentra did not wish to offend, of course, that was not her goal. But she never put much stock into destiny or luck, or any of that. Her family considered that to be trifling matters, but after living with Sophia for a short time, Ali could see that there was a certain magic behind the stars. At least for Sophia, anyway. "I'm heading out now. We still have a bit of time to spare, but I'd like to be there sooner rather than later." Alisentra nodded to the two girls, smiled, then headed to the door. Whether they followed or not was up to them, but she was headed to the training grounds now, and would arrive shortly.
When she did, she found that the two boys that she had become less-than familiar with were already there. The boys showing up the girls, that was a rare sight indeed. Perhaps they were only nervous and wanted to arrive early? Ali had to commend them for their timing. When the boys saw her, she smiled and let her hand rest on the hilt of her sword. She was ready, and was silently asking them the same question.

It took a moment for Tonelli to process the older woman's words and for that moment she stood dumbfounded, blinking a few times before realizing how dumb she must have been acting and a soft, embarrassed blush settling onto her cheeks. "I'm sorry Ali...thank you." She spoke keeping eye contact with Ali as she fixed her clothing, returning her gentle smile with a slight smile of her own.
Her eyes quickly shifted to the door when Sophia entered, following the girl to her bed. "Morning Sophia." Throughout their time together in the dorm Tonelli had never seen the girl sleep, not even once, which made her wonder how in the world she stopped herself from passing out in the middle of the day. More importantly it made Tonelli rather envious of how good the girl looked even without sleep compared to her who would be a complete mess if she didn't get enough rest. Tonelli was the type of person who needed a lot of sleep, often spending upwards of eleven or twelve hours each day in bed. She was also the type of person who could sleep through the end of the world. The moment her head hit the pillow she would be out. The two girls couldn't be further apart in their sleeping habit if they wanted.
"And I take it that means you're ready for our exam today?" Tonelli giggled. She didn't believe much in stars or fate, not since she had been a child the age of ten who thought that her horoscope determined everything in her life. What little faith she retained in such ideas was only because of Sophia who seemed to have some kind of mystical power about her.
"Hey! Wait for me!" Tonelli shouted as she broke off into a run out of the room after the older girl, only to double back and return to the dorm to retrieve the gauntlet resting on her desk. She slipped the metal device onto her hand, giving it a soft pat once it locked in place then grabbing her large black jacket. Even before Tonelli threw it on herself it became evident that the piece of clothing was far too large for the girl's small form, yet it seemed that Tonelli never went out without it. "C'mon Sophia! We don't want to be late!"
Once out the dorm Tonelli broke into a sprint toward the training ground. The girl was very fast despite her short stature and skinny legs and she caught up with Ali just as they both arrived. She noticed the two boys of their group already present as she stopped to catch her breath, exhaling puffs of mist into the chilly morning air. "Morning...Jace...Parks..." Tonelli spoke in between heavy breaths.

Sophia was a bit saddened to see that Alisentra wasted no time in idle chatter. Then again, it was a very important day after all. There was no time to waste. Lateness would mean all their training to this very day would be for nothing. In the real world, lateness was unacceptable. Lateness could mean the very difference between life...and death. Tonelli greeted her but it wasn't long before the short girl had grabbed what she needed and took off as well leaving Sophia alone in the room. "I am more than ready for the exam, Tonelli. More than you know," Sophia said to nobody around, taking a moment to stare at the opposite wall before turning and heading to the door, a strange shadow lingering where she originally stood before fading away into nothingness.
The stargazing beauty strode peacefully to the training grounds. Everyone was in such a hurry but there was plenty of time left. Time management was important if you really wanted to get things done. Being early was fabulous; you would not miss what you meant to see. However, that time could have been used on something else. Sophia kept a stern gaze on her face causing people she passed to shy away. She wasn't the type to commune with people other than those she knew. Had she not been forced to dorm with Alisentra and Tonelli, there was a huge chance she would not have come to be friendly towards them. Upon reaching the training ground, she took note of two other figures: Parks and Jace, neither of whom she particularly cared for one way or the other. Of course, her two dorm mates were there as well. She came to a stop behind them, stroking her star globe, the dark sphere in the center seeming to dim the daylight surrounding it as if siphoning it inwards.
"Good morning, Parks. Jace," Sophia gave a brief greeting as a courtesy. After all, they were testing together and had done some training together as well. "This exam will be a breeze. The stars watch over us even in the day," she commented to Ali. "You know you have my support." Her voice chimed now. It seemed she was ready to get this over with. The eagerness just now suffused her form whereas everyone else had been panicking, anxious, and so forth long before. It may have been just standing there on the grounds that gave her the feeling. Despite knowing they would all succeed, there was still the excitement of getting to that success. Just how would they attain victory? That was the thrilling part.

The two boys had been bickering quietly between one another. Jace insisted that they had arrived too early––that was time they could have spent resting! Parks, however, refused to listen to the older boy's trivial complaints. So what if they were the first ones to arrive? It just meant they would definitely be there on time for the exam; promptness, if nothing else, mattered most of all.
But Jace refused to see things that way.
"I'm telling you dude," he huffed, arms crossed over his chest, "this isn't gonna go well if we're tired!" Parks offered no comment in response. He chose instead to nod in Ali's direction as she approached; Jace's gaze quickly fell to the older girl and he bit his lower lip in frustration. How much of his complaining had she just heard? Hopefully none, but the look on her face didn't seem all to ignorant. She seemed to silently question him, in fact.
"Uhh... yeah. We're good. Ready as ever!" Jace commented with a faltering enthusiasm. Parks snorted. The older boy glared. He opened his mouth to speak again when Tonelli suddenly sped up behind the fencer, offering a greeting in between heavy breaths. He shrugged his shoulders and nodded at the girl.
"I told you we weren't the only ones in a hurry," Parks muttered under his breath, smiling at both of his classmates. This earned him a punch in the shoulder, but he shrugged it off. "I assume you're..." he trailed off as Sophia strolled onto the ground casually, his eyes locked on the weird globe in her hands. He didn't know what it was about the thing, but it gave him the creeps. Sophia in general, as polite as she was, scared him a little. Divining fate through the power of the stars... the whole thing just seemed unnatural to him. But he voiced none of this opinion, listening intently as the older girl assured them all of her support. The scrawny teen opened his mouth to respond, but a different voice echoed in the grounds.
"It's good to know you have such faith," Alessia called out, appearing from behind the group without a sound despite wearing a full suit of armor. "It pleases me to know that I made the right decision in accepting you five." Her voice was light. Jovial. The look on her face beamed pride as she took a moment to look each of her students dead in the eyes. She could feel her heart swell as each of them seemed prepared––even if it was to varying degrees––for her trial. But the moment passed before long and her smile faded into oblivion.
"My students," she began, her voice powerful and authoritative. "Today you embark as a class specially chosen to become the next Guardians of Volentia. The exam I shall administer today shall act as proof that you are fit to taken on the title of First Rank Initiates of the Academy. Should you pass you shall be able to accept requests from the board in the lobby and leave our hallowed halls to take your first steps as the Champions of the Volentiam Kingdom. I have no doubt of any of your abilities and I am ready to see what your prior training has taught you." She swiftly drew a sword from its place on her hip and took a battle stance across from her five pupils.
"At this moment I am no longer your Headmaster, but your proctor. This is your time. The exam begins now!"

She felt so good in fact that she even pumped her plated right arm into the air and gave a loud, cheesy cheer. "Let's go team!"

"Glad to hear it," Alisentra replied, nodding once to Sophia. With the mage at her back, she had little to fear in way of injury or exhaustion. Working together for the time that they had, both knew each other's abilities enough to be useful to each other during battle. Ali paused for a moment, watching the boys for a moment. Jace appeared to be a little tired, and Parks was his usual self. She smiled at them, there was no need to be so grumpy, she wondered why they fought all the time.
The Headmaster was the one who came out to greet them. Ali was glad, Alessia was the only one of the teachers that actually used her nickname instead of her full name. For some reason, she just thought of the Headmaster as more personable that way, instead of being some character in a higher game. This day, this moment, Ali knew marked the time where she finally graduated.
Ali wrapped her shaking fingers around her hilt and grasped it, her lungs breathing deeply. All nerves that might have been hiding within her vanished as she drew her sword. The hilt was steel with cloth to help grip and the guard was two small stubs that extended just past her hand's width. The light, steel blade itself was not very long, but it was wide at the base and the width diminished until it reached a point. The blade was about as long as Ali's forearm and hand, but it was light and easy to use.
Alisentra flicked her wrist and entered her combat stance. One foot but a half step back and pointed to the side while her other foot pointed directly forward. She was the perfect balance, ready to dodge, weave, and strike at any time. Ali lined up her blade with her front foot, making sure there would be nothing she could not block or dodge. The Headmaster was the one who came out to greet them. Ali was glad, Alessia was the only one of the teachers that actually used her nickname instead of her full name. For some reason, she just thought of the Headmaster as more personable that way, instead of being some character in a higher game. This day, this moment, Ali knew marked the time where she finally graduated.
Ali wrapped her shaking fingers around her hilt and grasped it, her lungs breathing deeply. All nerves that might have been hiding within her vanished as she drew her sword. The hilt was steel with cloth to help grip and the guard was two small stubs that extended just past her hand's width. The light, steel blade itself was not very long, but it was wide at the base and the width diminished until it reached a point. The blade was about as long as Ali's forearm and hand, but it was light and easy to use.
Alisentra flicked her wrist and entered her combat stance. One foot but a half step back and pointed to the side while her other foot pointed directly forward. She was the perfect balance, ready to dodge, weave, and strike at any time. Ali lined up her blade with her front foot, making sure there would be nothing she could not block or dodge. Then, she waited. Still as a calm pool of water, and more flexible than the branches of trees. There was no way she could fail this test.

This was the moment. A shiver traversed Sophia's spine as she listened to the headmaster speak praise upon them. This powerful woman had such confidence in them, but Sophia knew she would not back down or hold back--at least more than what was necessary. She was sure that the headmaster's full might would be enough to easily vanquish them all, but this was only a test, and it was safe to say that they would not fall so easily. Only if they made foolish blunders would they stumble and fall. But now, Sophia stood strongly.
Sophia held her hand out to her side and her globe began to hover, the dark light within draining more light from its surroundings. Her eyes seemed to gleam with delight at the start of the exam. She spared a glance next to her at Parks and grinned widely. He was a fellow practitioner of magic; he had chosen a good spot to be in. If they were to continue working together, it seemed as though they would be together a lot in the back lines. "Mana flows, Parks, and so too must you," she spoke to him eloquently, pretty much quoting something out of their fundamental lessons, but it was something so important--something to never be forgotten. At the sight of their Headmistress, Jace seemed to perk up immediately. A confident grin plastered itself across his face and he took to a combat stance. Alessia, it seemed, did not mind this, for she made no comment on it and merely allowed the boy to do as he would. The Twin Blade smiled as he unsheathed his weapons, brandishing them with a passion. "This'll be a piece of cake!" he declared gleefully, eyes deadlocked on their opponent.
"But just to make sure," he added after a moment, a mischievous look in his blue eyes. He shifted the sword in his right hand and pointed it dead at Alessia with a flourish. Instantly a blood red symbol appeared on the outskirts of her armor. Nothing more. Nothing less. His allies, however, would be somewhat aware of just what this seemingly useless marking would do for them. And boy was he excited.
He dashed forward without another word.

"Oh brother," Parks groaned as Jace took off ahead of everyone else. The boy was gonna get himself severely injured if he wasn't careful. His attention, however, displaced itself instantly as Sophia suddenly spoke from right next to him. The poor teen nearly jumped out of his skin. "Uhh...yeah. Flowy... that's me," he answered awkwardly, pointing his crossbow at their Headmaster. "I'll just... uh... get on that now," he added quickly, calling upon his mana.
Sophia was right. The flow was incredibly important. As a bolt of pure electricity formed on his crossbow, he made sure to give her a nod before taking aim. In an instant the energy projectile shot forward and struck the woman dead on. Bullseye.

Sophia decided to stride forward, throwing her star globe into the air. It circled around her as she called upon the aid of the stars, a light appearing in her palm. She swirled the light about, her movements not disrupting the orbit of her globe at all as if she had practiced the bodily choreography for the spell intensively. The astrological magic required some forms of somatic involvement making it a very physically taxing magic, not just in the way that it took up mana. It required physical effort. The sphere of light she held grew larger and brighter and with a subtle toss, the light surged through the air, honing in on the headmaster with a vengeance.
Sophia opened her eyes realizing she had tossed the ball with them closed. She scolded herself mentally. It was something she often did when she got too into the movements. She didn't have any extra power to guide the star where it was meant to go, so she had to have faith in her mind's eye. She held out her hand and the star globe returned to its position, hovering above her palm.

Almost like lightning, there was a flash in the air as Alisentra shot forward, kicking up dust in her wake before stopping just short of her target, the Headmaster. Her sword was primed and ready, and she jabbed forward once, a lighter blow than might have been anticipated, but that blow quickly turned into two as Ali spun her blade and nicked the Headmaster's armor once again. It was at that moment that Ali realized she forgot to put her hair up. Her long, brown hair shot ahead of her, obscuring much of her face. She couldn't follow through with any more attacks, so she flipped backwards to avoid further combat, but still stayed within striking range.
Alisentra moves to F-5.

Just like Ali had Tonelli dashed forward with her long hair flowing behind her almost like a cape. The whirring noise gradually grew louder with each step she took toward the Headmaster. Before reaching her she tossed out a ring from her pocket, which suspended itself in the air before projecting a large, circular field around it almost like a portal. A second field appeared just behind the headmaster, forming a cylindrical tube which Tonelli did not hesitate at all to run straight into, making a cut toward the headmaster as she passed.
When she exited out the other side she was halted as her gauntlet slammed into the large iron gates. The impact causing a large shockwave to resonate through the area, causing the ground to tremble and even destroying a few of the training dummies to the side.
When the shockwave ended Tonelli pulled back and cringed at the sight. There was a visible fist-shaped dent in the gate, where she had punched it. Alessia's not going to like that one bit. "Eh...sorry about that, Miss Alessia." She spoke followed by a nervous laugh as she turned around to face their headmaster.

"Gotcha!" Jace cheered, having skidded around to catch the Headmaster as she ducked around Ali. The boy quickly lashed out at the armor-clad woman, intending to shred her defenses. The woman was surprisingly agile in that heavy armor, however, and she quickly dodged one of his strikes. "God dammit!"

Parks blinked. How was Miss Alessia evading so many of their attacks? Surely that heavy armor slowed her down! "Guess not," he murmured to himself, taking a few steps forward.

Not taking another second to think about how agile their foe was, Parks instead focused on his connection to his mana. The power of lightning had been super helpful before, but now that the headmaster was in range, it didn't make much sense for him to use that far reaching ability. No. Now was the time for a longer lasting assault. In a matter of seconds the boy fired off several bolts of energy, all which surrounded Alessia and started to strike her.

The woman was surprisingly agile in that heavy armor, however, and she quickly dodged one of his strikes. "God dammit!"

Parks blinked. How was Miss Alessia evading so many of their attacks? Surely that heavy armor slowed her down! "Guess not," he murmured to himself, taking a few steps forward.

Not taking another second to think about how agile their foe was, Parks instead focused on his connection to his mana. The power of lightning had been super helpful before, but now that the headmaster was in range, it didn't make much sense for him to use that far reaching ability. No. Now was the time for a longer lasting assault. In a matter of seconds the boy fired off several bolts of energy, all which surrounded Alessia and started to strike her.

"Agh!" Ali yelped as the blade caught her just on her cheek. The sword just barely nicked her, but it still hurt. Then she began to feel warm, and felt terror rise up within her as fire surrounded her, burning her. The flames did not stay long, but they had done their damage, and Alisentra had a burn march on her hands from protecting her eyes. For a moment, she shivered in place, not moving from her spot. "Control. C'mon Ali..." Ali mouthed silently to herself. She shook again and lowered her arm, glancing around her. The headmaster moved around her a little bit, and seemed to be refocusing her attention now.

Not only was her shockwave completely evaded by the headmaster it had also reduced several of the training dummies nearby to rubble. A grimace flashed across her face as she realized that not only did she deface and destroy academy property it also succeeded in accomplishing nothing. The exuberance of the small girl was quickly dampened by the thought as her shoulders slumped down and she stared blankly at the headmaster's general direction.
She became alert as she noticed Ali running to a nearby armor rack and rummaging through the pieces of armor. Her eyes lit up as if she had an epiphany and she quickly followed suit grabbing the other piece of armor off the rack. There was a weapon rack nearby as well, and the logical course of action was to grab a piece of equipment off that as well. But not before Tonelli turned toward the older girl with a concerned look in her eyes. She didn't seem as cool and composed as before. "Are you alright Ali?"

She seemingly snatched light from the air around her in a sphere, swirling it about to gain power before taking careful aim and hurling it at the headmaster. No, this time there would be no mistakes. She would nail the somatics and toss with accuracy this time.

Her eyes opened wide, her star globe never ceasing its orbit around her, for she was going to call upon the stars again for sure. "It has been splendid, Headmaster, but the stars shine brightly upon us." She allowed her eyes to close and her face relaxed. She plucked light from the air like a ripe apple, but she did not bite into it as if it were said fruit. She swirled it around, harnessing and strengthening the magic before hurling it at the oncoming woman, taking careful aim though it was hardly necessary with the woman being so close. Hopefully this exam would be over as soon as it had started.

There was no time for her to waste looking for a good weapon, taking the first piece of equipment she could get her hands on Tonelli made a mad dash for the headmaster intent on saving her classmate.

Alisentra never told anyone about her intense fear of fire. She doesn't even remember why she is afraid of fire, only that whenever she sees it, she shakes uncontrollably until something distracts her from it. Ali glanced at the armor in her arms. There wasn't a salve in it. "Water, I need water." Ali murmured quietly, watching as Tonelli grabbed one of the weapons from the other rack and dashed away in a hurry. She knew they were in the middle of a fight, but she just could not bring herself to step forward and risk the fire again. And she started out so well too.

Alisentra toed her way over to the weapon rack and took the first one that caught her eye. She didn't care which one, she just wanted something for her hands to do. The burn on her arm singed a little, causing her to flinch. Ali shivered again, then turned her back to the rack. Alessia was going for Sophia and Parks, it seemed. Parks moved away, but...why did Sophia remain? She must have been confident in her ability to end the fight. Ali grimaced, anytime now, the Headmaster would chew her out for letting her fear get in the way of a battle.

As the Stargazer's sphere of light flew her way, Alessia allowed herself to lower her shield. This fight was over. They had passed. The very instant the ball of starlight got within an inch of her face, a burst of azure mana expelled outward from her entire body––a prism of the substance surrounding her in its protective grip. Sophia's attack never touched it. Rather, it flashed brightly and burst into an array of sparkles which rained down upon the training grounds. Parks, surprised by the sudden defensive maneuver fumbled to shift his stance only to drop his weapon. He tripped over his own feet a half a second later, looking up at the Headmaster with a mixture of awe and fear.
"That is enough," she declared, snapping her fingers with her now-free sword arm. The barrier that had erected itself around her dissipated into nothingness. "A job well done," she continued, nodding to the three within her immediate vicinity. "Today, my pupils, you have proven yourselves worthy of First Rank status. Together you all were able to effectively combat me in a simulated life or death situation. While the world outside may not pause to give you a chance to avoid true harm––her glance shifted to Ali––you have proven you can handle yourselves both individually and collectively in such situations. It is with my honor that I can present to you this license." She snapped again and a collective license appeared hovering in the air before her––it flew over to each of the students before disappearing. The words "First Rank Initiates" had stuck out most of all.

Alessia then turned to the lobby area, signaling for one of the Academy's medics. The nurse responded quickly with a bandage and some salve for Ali, helping the older student tend to her burns. The Headmaster made one final announcement, a smile wide on her face. "You may now take requests from the board in the lobby. Congratulations."
And with that she went inside, leaving the group to reflect on their performance and newfound status.
