Northern Winds (Re-Remake)

The group quickly wrapped up and resumed their search in fear of losing track of what little clue they had of the priestess's whereabouts. As they continued throughout the seemingly endless tundra they eventually spotted something through the snowstorm. Though it was still vague and difficult to see clearly it was much brighter than the surrounding snow. As the party ventured closer toward the light source they could barely make out a wooden stake above the light and a vague figure on the stake. Closer and closer they went and once they were close enough that the snow was no longer impeding their vision the group could clearly see the figure on the stake was a young woman no older than 18. Her blond hair was being blown every which way by the snowstorm. And although the woman was bound to the large wooden stake by layers of rope all across her body were signs of wealth. The silver ring on her right middle finger, the gold trimmed clothes that she wore, and the cross-shaped pendant dangling from her neck.

It was the priestess.

Beneath her was a fire pit that seemed to have just been lit. Men and women dressed in black cloaks and robes surrounded the pit, forming two circles and chanting in a incoherent language. Then one of the people on the outer circle had noticed the group and along with three others from the outer circle they approached the group. The flames roared as it came to life and began slowly creeping up the wooden stake. They were on a clock now.

To say that Lilliana was shocked would be an understatement. These heretical cultists were burning the priestess for whatever fiendish ritual they were trying to perform. Yet at the same time she had a smile on her face when the cultists approached her. Oh yes, these were heretics. It would be perfectly fine to kill them. Then she'll be able to gorge on their blood, human blood, until she was completely satisfied.

Lilliana slowly approached the cultist before her with a malicious grin on her face. Her dagger was held in front of her with the blade pointed toward the man's neck. Her eyes, with the bloodthirsty look of a hungry predator eyeing its prey locked with the man's eyes. Even without an open wound she could smell the blood of the man. She could almost feel its warmth trickling down her throat, yes, she would feast soon.

Lilliana was rather surprised by the cultist, after losing the majority of his blood and having a few broken bones, producing a knife from his cloak and slitting his own throat. The blood spilled out like a crimson fountain and covered herself and Quentin. What was even more surprising was the shadowy figure that rose from the cultist's lifeless body. It was some sort of apparition. She questioned whether or not her dagger would even be able to touch this seemingly ethereal being until the spirit struck the holy knight beside her. Shame, she would have to cut this one down quickly even though it most likely would not have any blood on it.

The vampire let out a scream as the fire hit her. It was unlike a normal fire which usually died out. Instead Lilliana could feel the burning sensation within her, scorching and searing her flesh from the inside. The pain was so excruciating that for a moment there she almost felt like she was alive. Her throat felt dry. She needed to drink again. She fixed her gaze onto the source of the fire and made her way to the caster, her eyes reflecting her thirst.

The caster had cornered himself after sending another wave of fire and pain through her body. The vampire had almost made the move to gouged herself on the man's blood instead if not for the troublesome holy knight following her. She had to control herself, the paladin was a devout follower of the church and she couldn't have him know much. Lilliana raised her knife and swung it down piercing through the cloth robes and plunging it deep into the man's chest. The knife wound was fairly close to the heart but it would most likely miss that particular vital organ. However the knife would definitely leave a collapsed lung in its wake.

As the final cultist that had broken from the ritual circle fell, the flame around the wooden stake had already began to slowly move its way up toward the priestess bound atop the stake. The group had to rescue her soon, or the purpose of the trek through the horrid winter wilderness would be all for naught. However another cultist, one who appeared to be the one leading this group, broke from the circle as the others backed away.

Sarah watched as the remainder of the group began to move forward through the bitter cold. She shivered a bit and tried to proceed behind them. They were crazy, looking for someone that they knew could be dead by now. She shook her head. Why was she even going along with them? It made absolutely no sense. There was almost nothing in it for her, yet she continued to go with these poor souls anyway. She looked ahead now and saw a lone man in the center of the barren whiteland. Behind him was a stake, where a woman was tied to it, struggling a bit. This must be their next sacrifice. She reared herself and got ready for the fight ahead. That mage looked tough.

Quentin began ahead of the others, knowing that he needed to get this mission completed. He felt the heat steadily drain out of him as the cold bit into his essence. There should be more to this armor than there was. He began to shiver and chatter from the sheer lack of heat that he felt. There was not much time that he could spend being so cold... Then, as he thought there was going to be no hope for himself, he saw a figure in the distance. Lilliana seemed to rush ahead towards it, and he followed in pursuit. He soon saw a robed man in the distance. Not much else in the way of visual distractions, save for the snow that flew everywhere. Pleased to be doing something, he unsheathed his sword and pointed it towards the man. "May the Goddess bless our swords and strike with righteous fury!"

Alla was walking with the others as she pondered their current situation. They had just finished the previous battle. She felt as if these battles were wastes of time. AS they continued to trek through this winter wonderland, the chances that they would find Cordelia were swiftly dwindling away. She cursed to herself and drew her staff. She wished that she had been able to do something, yet she knew that she was powerless against anything that they threw at her. Why was she so useless? Suddenly, she heard a slight sign of struggling far away from herself. She looked up to see a person tied to a tall stake behind a robed man. That blonde hair that fell from the person's head... It couldn't be... Cordelia?! Was it truly?! "Cordelia! By the Goddess! Is that you! I'll get you out of there!"

As Alla called out to the woman tied upon the stake there seemed to be no response. However after a moment there was a slight stirring and the woman lifted her up, her gold eyes fixed on the source of the voice. The woman was indeed the lost priestess the group had been looking for, and in seeing the cleric among the group a smile came across the priestess's face. "Sister Alla! Yes it's me! Help!"

So they finally found the priestess, after such a long trek through the snowy wasteland. The other cultists had backed off for whatever reason, perhaps their ritual was finished and they were just waiting for the sacrifice of the priestess. Now if they could take out the ringleader of this group of heretics then the others would scatter and they could return to the capital with Cordelia. That is if they could prevent her from being burned to death to begin with. "Sarah, we need you to get Priestess Cordelia off from that stake, quickly." she spoke to the woman beside her and took several steps forward, she would need to keep the man busy until Sarah manages to successfully get the priestess down from the pyre that threatened her life.

The thief girl decided to go and try swiping something from the cultist leader. Not her smartest idea considering she was the first of the group to raise a hand against the cultist. Of course the robed man would then target her, and it seemed that the attack had left her in a daze. "Nevermind that, Quentin, try to draw the bastard's attention off of Sarah." Lilliana spoke once again, her tone becoming very demanding as she was drawn toward the scent of the man's blood. She turned to the man and made a cut with her knife, drawing blood from the open wound.

The man began to bleed profusely from her cut, it seemed that she had managed to strike an artery. Lilliana's lips curled into a twisted smirk as she watched the man's robes as well as the snow beneath him become stained by the crimson liquid. She inhaled deeply, reveling in the scent of the dark liquid. Yes, soon, very soon, she will feast.

Sarah felt control beginning to come back over her limbs. Sighing, she ran from the fray and towards the stake. She knew that it was going against everything she stood for to release this prisoner, but she knew that there was a reward for fixing it, and so she grabbed a sai from her sash. Raising it so that it glinted into the cold winter light, she made sure that the woman tied to the pole could see what Sarah was about to do. Absolutely having a criminal amount of fun, she drew the knife over the girl's lily white throat, watching it quiver in excitement or fright, she couldn't tell. Then, with a swift motion, she swiped the sai down releasing the girl from her bonds. As she fell, Sarah tossed her one of her sais. "Fight. The faster we destroy this, the faster I collect my reward."

Alla watched as Quentin was now the target of the newest tremor. This mage seemed to be very formidable. This fight needed to end as quickly as she could make it. She raised her staff into the air and put it down again. She didn't need to act on impulse. She knew that she needed to make for healing one of the party's warriors because he would be able to hit the mage for all he was worth. Moving closer to Quentin, she reached into the group's sac and pulled out a phial of clear liquid. It was labelled "Not Poisoned". Tipping it into the man's frozen lips, she hoped that he would be healed.

Ah yes, the sweet scent of the man's blood, along with the scent of her own allies' blood, flowed to her. But she could ignore her so-called companions for now, despite how delicious Sarah's blood had been. She would get a chance to taste the girl's blood once more at a later point, right now she was more focused on the wicked man in front of him. Well, all things considered really no one could be worse than her. At least in the eyes of the church anyway. Ah well, as long as no one actually finds out about it she'll be perfectly fine. She approached the robed man and thrust her knife into his body once more, drawing more blood which she hungrily licked off the blade of the knife.

"Sister Alla!"

Those were the young priestess's first words after being released from her otherwise untimely death of being burned at the stake. Of course she gave a nod to Sarah as well, but she had been struck by the pillar of sharp stone immediately after handing her one of her weapons. Then Alla had ran over and seemed to be in a mixture of disbelief and elation to see her safe and sound. "It's me Sister. I'm alright." The younger woman spoke with a smile as she looked up to meet the older woman in the eye. Her attention however, was immediately drawn to the leader of the cultists as Quentin and Lilliana had almost beaten him down to submission. "Sister Alla, just give us a moment."

Cordelia turned to face the cult leader and began walking forward with the snow crunching beneath her boots. She held the weapon Sarah had handed to her tightly within her right hand. The grip of the weapon felt odd and as she took a few more swings at the air it felt clunky. Not to mention it lacked the reach she was used to with her rapiers, but she didn't have her rapier and this would be the best alternative as she didn't fancy fighting barehanded. Stopping for a moment Cordelia's legs bent slightly and she leaped forward toward the cultist, her weapon held out as she barely managed to strike the man down.

As soon as she had made sure the man would no longer get up Cordelia took off running toward Alla, holding her arms out as she took the older woman in an embrace. The darkness she experienced while blindfolded, the restraints they placed on her as she was carried through the snow like some kind of animal, and the heat from the flames of hell which threatened her very life, it was all over. She had been rescued by her childhood friend once again. "Oh Sister, it brings me great joy to be able to speak to you again." Cordelia spoke, "I knew you would come for me, I knew you would rescue me just like you did seven years ago." As Cordelia spoke there were a few drops of tears fell and she buried her face into the older woman's shoulder to try not to cry. It didn't work.

"Th-they did horrible things to me Sister." Cordelia finally managed to speak after a moment, "M-my clothes, my body, e-everything! It was terrifying!"

As the priestess cried Lilliana turned to the man who had just spoke to her, commenting on them completing their task. "Indeed, it's quite fortunate that we managed to find her before she was burned to ashes." Lilliana replied flatly but was taken slightly aback by the man's question. He was suspecting something, and Lilliana considered immediately threatening him to keep her secret but Quentin being a devout follower of the church would never strike a deal with her. And since he was part of this search party she wasn't able to kill him either, but she couldn't let him continue with that suspicion. But that could be dealt with later. "It's just your imagination." Lilliana replied with the same tone as she always had and gestured toward Alla and Cordelia, "Perhaps you should join them. I'll take care of the body here."

Alla felt Cordelia's arms wrap around her and she felt the pain she had felt all those years ago. She knew that she had let Cordelia down all those years ago and yet her she was safe and sound. Tears brimmed up in her eyes. Why was she still here. She should have been facing punishment for her crimes, yet she was still standing here holding Cordelia close. She wished with all her heart that it could have been her instead of Cordelia that day... and she knew about it. She knew things that no one else did, because she was scared to admit the truth to anyone else. She was just as guilty as those monsters who had done these horrible deeds to Cordelia so long ago. And yet she was standing here unscathed. She despised it.

"It's okay, Cordelia, it's okay. You are here, safe and sound with us now. No one can hurt you while you are under our protection. Don't be scared..."

Alla rubbed Cordelia's back as she sobbed into her shoulder. Although she wished harder and harder for redemption, she knew she would always be branded with the sin of negligence.

Quentin whipped around as the princess began crying into the cleric's arms. She seemed to have suffered quite a while back and he felt deep down for the poor woman. He took a step towards her and looked back towards Lilliana. There was nothing that he could do against the woman even if she were of a malicious aligment. Quentin nodded towards the nun. "Alrght, you be careful." Leaving the nun to take care of the mage's body, he began his trek back towards the princess and the cleric.

Meanwhile, Sarah was getting over what the mage had thrown at her. She really didn't like stuff he threw at her and she bristled against the chilling wind that just seemed to go right through her. She rubbed her sores while she walked towards the two sobbing women. Bitches. What did they really have to cry about besides the fact that it was really cold outside. She stopped in front of the pair and she began to examine this so-called "princess". She didn't seem to be that attractive, and from the sounds of it, pretty stupid. Though, if this woman really was a princess, she would be loaded beyond belief... She decided to proceed with a bit of caution, though not that much. "Sooooo... You're this so-called princess. Sounds to me like all you are is a puny crybaby." With a flick of her wrist, she snatched the weapon she had given to Cordelia earlier away from her and put it back in her sash. "Well, it sounds to me like we've completed our mission. Let's head back, I'm freezing!"

Quentin was outraged. How dare this lowly vagabond curse at the princess like that! He drew his sword and pointed it towards Sarah. "Sarah, if you know what's good for you, you'll apologize to Her Majesty at once. You're extremely lucky we even decided to take you along with us on this mission. We don't need you and your antics here."
