You're on the right track. He actually leaves in order to change professions. In his place, we get his charming brother Oliver, of whom we fight before Valincar leaves.

Yes. XD Oliver is indeed way more powerful than Valincar, but he is a super duper mega colossal jackass.

Yes. Valincar comes back new and shiny and with about the same powers as Oliver, so having Oliver in the party will be giving us a taste of what it'll be like to have Valincar in the party after his profession change, except Valincar won't be a douche. :3
