Adventures of Naletia: The Second Dragon War

Rest had not come to the Nightblade, but then again, she never really slept. Rightfully so. Her body needed next to none to begin with, and she found leaving herself vulnerable like that to be foolish. No one had ever seen her in a non-vigilant state and they never would. Not of her own volition, anyway.

The next morning met her easily. She strode out of her room and awaited the rest of the Guard as they made preparations for the journey to Silvia's village. It didn't take them long. They were on the road to the rather far off village fairly quickly––the sun shining down on them radiantly. However, such a peaceful, beautiful day could not last. It's not how the world worked. So not very far into their venture did some raptors block their path.

Before Gaiden even had the chance to draw his blade, Leilah was prepared for the fight. Dagger at the ready, she stood in a defensive stance awaiting the Captain's order to attack. The raptors, however, disappeared before any such order could be given; Leilah quirked an eyebrow behind her mask. Interesting...

Silvia had finally been accepted by the king after Leilah's rather forceful speech, what with taking Archer hostage and all to prove her point. It was certainly a very good thing that King Sigmund wasn't like other imperial rulers. Otherwise Leilah may have been charged with treason for threatening the king. A smile formed upon the priestess's lips when the young girl was placed as a member of the royal guard. Now that the girl had lost her only relative the royal guard would need to be her pillar of support. They could help her develop that potential in her into great strength. "The most desperate time is the moment when man is strongest. Without guidance however, man will crumble under his own strength." Aurelia spoke softly. And that night the priestess spent much time in prayer, asking for guidance and divine protection for the girl.

Morning came and the guard set off before daybreak. And when they stopped in the middle of their travel Aurelia held up her staff. It was then that Silvia spoke out, apparently picking out the fine detail of Gaiden referring to the entire royal guard as "men" despite there being more females in the royal guard. Archer had already responded to her question however she did have something else to add.

"Archer is right, being recognized as a human being comes before being recognized as male or female. There is little distinction between male or female on the battlefield." Aurelia paused for a moment here before resuming, "However the same also apply in reverse. If a woman becomes unable to fight there would be neither pity nor mercy for her on the battlefield. One would do well to remember this."

"Okay, I think I understand now," Silvia nodded her head once, showing that she did know what was being said. It made sense, but Silvia wasn't really focused anymore. They called her a human, despite what she had turned into. That, by far, was the best thing she could have heard in the moment. She smiled a little bit before redirecting her attention to the raptors. "So what are we going to do about them?" Her eyes seemed to lock onto one place, and her nose twitched slightly, as if disturbed by something. This discreet motion was not unnoticed by Gaiden.

"Silvia, can you see them?" Gaiden inquired, raising an eyebrow at the girl. She shook her head, she couldn't see them.

"I can smell them. It's such a putrid stench, can you not smell them?" Silvia wrinkled her nose, as if disgusted by what she was smelling.

"I don't need to smell them. I can see them," Gaiden replied. He took up a defensive stance, improving his posture and his attention. "Stay with me, I will reveal the first one to get too close. Attack as soon as you can see it."

Leilah waits.

The Nightblade turned her head toward Silvia and the others, having listened to their conversation thus far without offering her acknowledgement. It seemed the others had given the girl a fair explanation of the term, and so the woman felt little need to say anything. If she still did not understand, perhaps she would say something. But not now; now was the time to skin some raptors.

Yes.

She would enjoy that.

Though the Royal Guard knew that the enemy was in stealth, no amount of preparation would be enough to ward off the first attack. Knowing this, they steeled themselves and braced for an inevitable confrontation. Raptors were well known to thrive in empty lands, and with superior cunning and sharp claws, they could outwit or outright destroy whomever might hunt them. That being said, Raptors were not courageous beings on their own. If a great danger were to overwhelm one, it would likely flee quickly. That made killing Raptors difficult. But perhaps that could also be their undoing.

"Woah!" Silvia couldn't help but be surprised when the giant, reptilian creature suddenly jumped out of it's stealth and attacked Gaiden. She was not surprised, however, to see that Gaiden's balls of steel brushed off the attack as if it were nothing. What she would give to know how he became so sturdy, so impenetrable. The Raptor, on the other hand, having revealed itself, suddenly looked a bit silly now after its failed attack. Not only did the fearsome scratching barely leave so much as a dent.

"Silvia, unsheathe your sword. Do as I command, and we will be richly rewarded for our efforts." Gaiden spoke, directing his words but not his attention to the farmer girl. Silvia did as she was told, removing her sword from its sheath and beholding it for herself once again. The intricate dragon carvings were even more engraved into the steel, now appearing only as an insignia rather than part of the blade. It now resembled a regular soldier's sword more than an ancient weapon of old now.

"Ready your blade, we will strike together. Follow my movements and feel the flow of your blade. Like so..." Gaiden, readying his sword, struck forward with the strength and precision of a coiled snake, lashing out at his target, the Raptor, to pierce the creature's scaly hide and draw blood. Silvia was quick to follow up, mimicking Gaiden's movements and striking almost perfectly. If anything, the farmer girl was quick to learn, and the strength of her arm was certainly more than an ordinary girl. She struck at the exact spot that Gaiden did, the small hole his thin-bladed sword managed to pierce being torn apart even wider by the thicker, sharper blade of Silvia's legendary blade.

The Raptor screeched out in pain, the results of Gaiden and Silvia's combined attack leaving a gaping hole in its hide, revealing the softer flesh and causing blood to flow from the wound like a stream in the woods. Silvia glanced over at Gaiden, who wore the smallest of smiles on his visage. A small smile, but visible, and to Silvia, meaningful. She was learning quickly.

In the blink of an eye, Leilah was upon the raptor that Gaiden and Silvia had double-teamed. The gapping wound left her with hardly a challenge, the Nightblade's dagger sinking into the tender flesh with the utmost ease. And as quickly as she had appeared, she returned, dagger surprisingly clean and her stance fairly typical.

"There! Did you hear that?!" Silvia exclaimed suddenly, pointing in the direction of one of the Raptors. She had sensed something move or make some sort of sound that the others might have missed. Her dragon blood was beginning to show that it altered more than her sense of smell. It also seemed to have affected her physical strength and her other senses. Her eyes and ears became sharper as well, making her ever more suited to battle. It seems that her blood was not so much of a curse as she might have thought before. "One of the lizard things made some sort of noise, like hissing! If we can get to it and attack it, we may be able to reveal it!"

"That is a possible option, though I would not send out any ordinary soldier to attend to it. It has to be someone with the ability to hide as these creatures do," Gaiden spoke, his eyes dwindling over Leilah for a moment or two. "I leave that option up to you, Leilah. For now, I must direct my attention elsewhere. There is a raptor attempting to flank us, but it has only just cornered itself. Silvia, at attention!" Gaiden suddenly lunged forward, catching Silvia by surprise as he rushed past her and struck something solid. His blade screeched against scales and cut into the raptor, drawing just enough blood to mark the creature.

"Oh, excellent!" Silvia grinned when the raptor was revealed by Gaiden's attack. She slid in range of the raptor, getting behind Archer, grateful that he had relinquished his previous position so that she could attack more readily. Though that probably wasn't planned. Or maybe it was? Silvia's ears reddened at the thought. She held her sword up again and copied a move that she saw Archer make once, one where he cut his blade in an upward fashion. The attack was made with little success, but Silvia blamed that on her inexperience.

The second that Leilah heard the creature hiss, her masked visage turned to stare at its invisible frame. Dagger suddenly ready, she only awaited Gaiden's look before springing into action. With unparalleled dexterity she approached the beast and quickly sunk her dagger into it, pulling away just as swiftly.

"They certainly aren't making this very hard."

"My attacks aren't doing anything!" Silvia frowned, watching Gaiden and Archer rip the raptor in front of her to shreds. She felt her blood begin to heat up, she wasn't feeling like herself anymore. This unquenchable rage always seemed to appear at the worst times. Silvia scowled, furrowing her brow as she tightened the grip on her sword. The blade, however, seemed to react to her boiling blood, and started glowing a faint red color.

Gaiden saw all this and, very carefully, spoke to Silvia. "Silvia, listen to me. You must learn to control your blood. You are a dragon as much as you are human. Perhaps we can use the power of your rage. Try it now, but do not let it take complete control. Focus." On his own, he couldn't do much damage either, but he would not complain. He only swept his blade across to strike the reptile in front of him.

Gaiden's words did not inspire Silvia with any sort of courage, but she shuddered and took a deep breath, ready to try it. She allowed her blood to flow, and when she did, the faint red glow of her sword turned into a blazing fire that shrouded her blade in it's intense heat. The fire light something in Silvia's emerald eyes, and she allowed herself the smallest of smiles. Silvia grabbed her blade and swung it over her head, bringing it down square on the head of the raptor. The flames shot out from her blade and bathed the reptilian, burning it to a crisp, golden brown color.

As swiftly as she had melded into the shadows, Leilah suddenly appeared again, the raptor's back now turned to her. Once more her dagger found purchase in the creature's scaly hide, piercing through to rend the tender flesh beneath. And then it was done. Leilah drew back with her usual grace and took a more defensive positioning. Shame, she thought, I thought they might be a little smarter. There was the slightest shrug of her shoulders.

Silvia was ready for it, she allowed the raptor to claw her, but she made sure it didn't reach any of her vital spots. That would have been dangerous. Still, it hurt, but not as much as the burning sensation that coursed through her blood as her wound sizzled and fused back together. She stared at the spot in wonder as her skin melded back together perfectly, not leaving a single scratch behind. She still felt a bit drained from the attack, but at least she wasn't bleeding from it! "Woah," was all she could muster.

"The dragon's blood is not a curse, Silvia," Gaiden said quite confidently, "if you can master your power, you will become much stronger."

"I still have no idea how I should be holding this sword," Silvia said, almost laughing at herself. Gaiden merely smiled and took a step back, heading towards where Leilah was. She was under some heavy attacks, and he meant to offer his protection.

"When we make camp for the night, I or Archer can teach you the basics. Worry not," Gaiden assured, then pressing a hand to his chest and bringing forth his strength. An aura of protection seemed to emanate from his being. Surely anyone who deigned to take cover under his wing would feel no threat from an enemy, as Gaiden would be there to protect him, the stone guardian that he was.

Gaiden assumed the aura of the Guardian's Embrace!

Silvia, in the meanwhile, nodded excitedly at the thought. Then, not really thinking about it, took up her sword and drew it back over her shoulder before swinging it with all her might at the reptile before her. Unluckily, the blade curved at the end and when it reached the raptor, it was struck with the flat of the blade. The raptor spun around on its talons and seemed dazed by the attack.

A slight grunt passed the Nightblade's lips as the raptors suddenly turned on her, lashing out at her with fangs and claws. Aurelia had decided to help out finally, but that did little to sway the raptor. The thing would need to be taken down just like all the rest, but with no opening available to her at the moment she would just have to make do. A swift stab was made followed by the retreat.

Watching Silvia attempt to use her sword reminded Aurelia of when she first learned holy magic. She had only been a child back then, one much younger than the what the half breed was now. The woman raised her staff, it felt so light and natural in her hands compared to back then when it was so heavy and clunky for her to hold. She closed her eyes and began a soft chant, a small orb of light illuminating the focus on the tip of her staff and an orb of light formed in the air above the beast. It was a small sphere at first and slowly grew larger before falling upon the creature.

The raptors, though they could see who among the Guard was the most threatening, seemed confused as to whom they should be attacking. The shadow-thief would only disappear into nothing, another was too tough to break, but there was one, a girl, who seemed to be healing much too quickly. Plus, there was something about her that made the raptors begin to feel fear.

"You cannot hide from me, beast," Gaiden growled at the raptor who was closeby and attacking Silvia. He worried for the girl, but it seemed like a wasted cause. She healed quicker than any normal human, and it seemed that any bleeding was quickly stopped by her boiling blood. He quickly reached out and struck the reptile four times, cutting into it's scaly hide and preventing it from relying on it's stealth any longer.

Gaiden nodded at Archer, in response to his query. "I will allow it. Archer is talented with more than just the naginata. You will have an excellent teacher tonight, Silvia." Gaiden took a step back, looking towards where Aurelia was. She seemed to be doing alright by herself, but it didn't hurt to make sure she was in his protective aura.

Gaiden uses Quarter Mark on Raptor (3)! 2 Atk DMG! 4 hits! Reveals the stealthed target!

Raptor (3) is revealed!

"I'd like that," Silvia replied with a smile, though she did not remove her eyes from the raptors that were attacking her. Like before, she held up her arms to guard her body, allowing them to be clawed and bitten. She couldn't avoid the attacks, she wasn't quick enough for that just yet. But like before, the wounds were quick to heal, a steam coming up from her hot blood as the scratches and bite marks disappeared.

After the attack, Silvia felt something rise up within her. It was stronger than anything she had experienced before, besides her full-body transformation into a dragon. The rage that had once controlled her then was...imbuing her with power. She could feel herself growing stronger. Much stronger. It wasn't just a small adrenaline rush. It was her rage. The rage of her inner dragon.

Silvia gripped the hilt of her sword a little tighter, and with little effort again called forward a flame that surged out of her hands and surrounded her blade. She took both hands and held her sword up, dashing to the raptor that Gaiden had revealed from stealth and slamming the edge of her blade onto the raptor's skull. The fire on the blade made it that much easier to cleave through the raptor's head. A clean strike, a clean kill. The fire from her blade then sprung forward and engulfed not only the raptor in front of her, but also jumped to sear the other.

When it was over, Silvia stood there, the flames from the attack lingering around her in the form of small embers. The light of these embers glowed and illuminated her figure, granting her a physical display of the tamed dragon within her soul. "Woah..." was all she said.

With the raptors off her back, the tension in Leilah's shoulder muscles eased just a bit. She had thought for sure that they would have followed her with how easily they had damaged her, but it seemed Silvia proved a greater threat to them. She quirked a dark eyebrow beneath the mask. Out of fear, perhaps? she mused, absentmindedly noticing a bag out of the corner of her eye. It soon found its way into her possession.

These beasts were falling rather quickly, and at a glance no one else has been badly injured, quite fortunate really. The raptors they were fighting didn't seem to be much of a threat, but even so she needed to take cover as being the most physically frail of the group she could still be taken out fairly quickly if they set their eyes on her. As Gaiden took a step back Aurelia took a step forward. As long as the captain was in between the raptors and herself she would be safe, and with her magic the raptors who seemed to already have a difficult time inflicting more than just a minor wound to the group would be unable to even come close to threatening anyone's life.

Gaiden moved forward again, knowing that Archer would have the proper reach to get close to the raptor, even if he blocked part of the way. With his blade he paused before plunging it into the raptor, creating a hole in it's scaly side, similar to what he did to the first raptor. Only this time, he merely waved an invitation to Silvia to follow suit, rather than tell her what to do. He trusted that she remembered well enough what to do.

Silvia saw Gaiden move forward and attack, and she smiled when he indicated for her to follow. She was being useful to them now. She was an asset now, someone who could be relied on to follow up and not leave an opportunity go to waste. Without hesitating a moment longer, Silvia positioned her blade like Gaiden had, so that the tip of her sword faced the open wound. Then, using as much strength as she could muster, she plunged the tip of the sword into the reptile, opening the wound and causing severe pain for the beast. Silvia quickly pulled her sword back out and looked to Archer for his follow up.
