"O-of course," Natasha stammered, reaching into the small leather pouch on her side and pulling out a small scroll covered with dirt stains. Whoever she had gotten it from, the person had obviously been in a hurry to write it–the script was more chicken-scratch than anything else. However, the key points were clear: an infestation was occurring in the Southern Garden and the botanists were very displeased. They wanted someone to clear them out without damaging the newly planted flora and fauna, and would make sure to pay exceedingly well for a job well done.

No one in the would-be guild seemed to have an issue, so the whole group set out immediately, taking a mere ten minutes to reach the entrance to the Southern Garden from the tavern. There they were met with little more than a note hastily attached to a battered wooden post exclaiming that the pests were getting aggressive and someone better come deal with them quickly. Without much else to say or do, the group began their battle preparations.

Prologue–01: A Simple Request

Just killing some bugs huh? The idea that they were just being used as human pesticides wasn't exactly pleasing to her. Unfortunately beggars couldn't be choosers and considering the lack of recognition of their small group at the moment she should just feel fortunate to simply have a job. Keine let out a quiet sigh and drew back her bowstring. There were a few insects nearby that she could probably plant an arrow, or two, or three in before they noticed the group.

Bugs? Infestation? Evelyn sighed, shaking her blue head from side to side. She couldn't believe they were demoted to such trivial affairs. But it wasn't like they were going to be doing anything else. A request was a request. Eve joined the guild for a reason, there was no getting out of these affairs. Besides, she could really use the fresh air and exercise. Knowing her position in the guild, she took her place in front of Keine, in order to protect the much more fragile ranger.

Evelyn starts at B-4.

Looking to her side, Eve noticed the younger girl that had joined their ranks. She was the most fragile of the group, probably, and could use protection as well. That was something else Eve had to set up.

Wikefno starts in A6.

Suspicions confirmed, Wikefno had basked in his brilliant deduction and instantly became excited at the prospect of taking off for a mission despite the location not being in some exotic faraway land. It was actually just a task of insect extermination, but a mission was a mission and they definitely needed the funds. Trailing along behind the others, Wikefno remained in whimsical thought until they reached the garden where some rather vicious beetles were running rampant. Such was the way of nature, but to see such beauty be violated in such a disgusting way perturbed Wikefno greatly near to the point of anger. This place reminded him of a shrine on the outskirts of his home village that was kept up by a venerable priest. It was the perfect place for brainstorming, relaxation, or meditation. The garden he found himself in now could serve such a similar purpose; it needed to be protected.

"Got to, got to keep the plants safe at all costs," he muttered mostly to himself in a very focused manner, and focused wasn't exactly a word that could be used to define Wikefno very often. Even now with his whole heart behind this mission, there was no telling how easily swayed he would be from the true course of action he had meant to take.

"At all costs..."

Wikefno's words resonated abrasively throughout Seamus's eardrums like an angry cockroach, buzzing endlessly, relentlessly. "At all costs," the bug whispered. "At all costs." Seamus's eye twitched and his lips shriveled in disgust. There weren't multiple costs. There was only a single cost in Seamus's eye, and that was clear. It became clear the second he joined this brat-filled charade of kids who called themselves "mercenaries."

"The only cost here is money, Wikefno." Seamus spat. "Don't y'all dare let a single plant die, you hear?"

Jack took his place at the fore of the group, drawing his large sword with nary a flourish or announcement. At his companions beginning bickering though the tip dropped a few inches as he sighed in frustration. "Let us please just keep it together long enough to finish this, shall we? Perhaps this time we can actually pay off Keine's tab and our rent at the same time." He kept a quiet growl to himself. Never had to deal with this in the order. Not that there weren't rowdy whelps there too, but at least they got it disciplined out of them.

Eve didn't bother listening to the bickering of the group. She had more important things to worry about. Instead of guarding the more fragile targets by staying close to them, Evelyn made the decision to run out and guard them by attracting attention to herself. She took to a sprint, getting far down the path closer to where a cluster of these bugs hovered around. She threw her right arm out to her side, magic in the air converging to form a sword. A sword made entirely of ice. But she wasn't done. Bringing her blade in front of her face, the tip pointing upwards, magic once again converged onto her blade, extending it's length by a ridiculous amount.

Turning to one of the bugs, Evelyn lashed out, her sword of ice leaving a trail of cold mist as it sped through the air. The blade cut through and left a sizable mark in the bug, the cold of the blade seeming to leave remnants behind.

The knight nodded to himself as Evelyn sped ahead. "Right." Jack moved past Seamus towards the nearest beetle, which seemed to have taken notice of the newcomers and started raising its brightly colored wings in an attempt to scare them off. Jack of course was having none of that and raised his blade, about to charge the thing before he saw the precious flowers just behind. "Oh blast it all." He muttered, and resigned himself to giving the overgrown insect a harsh, downward slash, easily cutting through its grass green carapace.

"Come on now Jack, I don't drink that much. Only five or six glasses a day, give or take a few." Keine giggled and drew back her bowstring again. This time her hand started to emit a light blue glow and an arrow crafted from magical energy formed in her hand. She turned to the nearest beetle, taking a moment to aim her shot carefully. When she let the arrow fly it almost immediately split into three arrows, each retaining the velocity and force of the original.

There was silence intermingled with the responses of the others. Bickering? What bickering? Wikefno felt a grin creeping onto his face and his hand shot to his mouth as he instantly had to stifle a fierce bout of rising laughter, but it was all for nothing as he let it out in a huge guffaw, placing both arms over his stomach which soon began to hurt from the hilarity of the situation. Bickering? All Wikefno heard was some grumpy fellow attempt to be...what even? Seemed like he was just going out of his way to be abrasive. For shame. "Money is the root of evil and sin; there is no place for such a thing in my heart, though it seems yours is a little smudged there. Roll into something foul when we rolled out of bed this morning, hm?" the trapper prodded, raising his eyebrows suggestively, but otherwise kept the rest of his comments to himself. Seamus the Simple-minded didn't quite grasp what Wikefno was going for with his earlier statement, but alas, he was a lost cost.

Raising his gauntlet, Wikefno took aim at the nearby beetle and began to draw in energy rapidly. Quick flashes of crimson light could be seen entering the device like a blur over the course of what could only have been a couple seconds, and from that small bit of gathered energy, Wikefno fired a red hot laser right at his intended target, the very air wavering due to the massive heat intended to melt anything that got in its way.

"Woooo that's hot!" the trapper exclaimed, shaking his gauntleted hand drastically. True it was a bit uncomfortable, but for what it was worth, there really was no complaining about it. Wikefno would endure for the sake of the garden.

Natasha felt just the tiniest bit out of place as the rest of the mercenaries sprang into action. Well, except for Seamus who seemed more interested in just watching for now. Nevertheless, she felt as though their power was well beyond her own–everyone seemed so sure in their strike or spell, hesitation was either nonexistent or very well hidden. She, herself, only wished to emulate such certainty. Stop that! she reprimanded internally, You'll never get in if you don't do something! Try, Natasha. And so she did, she stepped forward and a certain swell of mana surrounded her.

The beetle went down after only one volley of arrows. This could end up being easier than she expected. Nevertheless the remaining pests were starting to eat at the flowers and shrubs and they needed to be quick about eliminating the rest of them. Drawing her bowstring back again another arrow formed in her hand which she promptly launched between Weo and Seamus, over the shrubs, and piercing straight through one of the beetles as it split into three.

She wasn't going to be doing much like this. She'd be better off weeding the garden rather than fighting the pests. At least her icy touch would kill the whole weed, root and all. But she couldn't risk touching the plants. They would likely freeze just as the weeds would. Evelyn just had to do her job, and do it without complaint. Looking behind her, she saw that any immediate threats to the others have nearly all been dealt with. The only one left was a weakened pest that she could probably hunt down if she wanted to.

Making up her mind, Evelyn took a step forward, not really accomplishing much except getting closer to the infernal bug she was trying to kill. It didn't seem like it wanted to move, despite that probably being the smartest thing it could have done in this situation. But what should she expect from a bug? Certainly not that level of intelligence. Another strong swing f her arm, her frozen blade leaving an icy mist behind as it cut through the air.

Wikefno attacks Chewy! 5 Dmg! (INT)

Keeping his sore hand focused, Wikefno charged more energy with his gauntlet and fired off a hollow sphere of light aimed right at the bug that he had just seared...or at least attempted to sear. It didn't look well-done to Wikefno, but since it was about over for the thing anyway, he supposed there was no loss. Looking about and tilting his head, Wikefno realized things had grown rather quiet. Everyone was so absorbed in the mission. It was inspiring and somewhat droll at the same time. A battle is not meant to be a party. That was what his master had taught him back when he was a fun-loving youth...granted not much had changed since then except that the young man was able to control himself a bit more now then in the past. He always questioned why things couldn't be fun, and his master had told him that once one takes pleasure in killing, his soul is swayed to the dark side, and the one who used to kill only in defense becomes the new great evil that merely seeks to lay waste to the living for entertainment.

Wikefno shuddered at the thought. Him? A great evil? Nah, he didn't have fun killing things. He just preferred a jovial atmosphere, and this certainly wasn't one. Poking his tongue out in thought, he felt his dark eyes fall upon the new girl that was being tested. Why wasn't she getting in on the action? It looked like she was concentrating or something. It made Wikefno relieved that his own spells were instant, the gathering of energy most of the time taking only a split second before unleashing the desired ray he wished to fire. Much, much more convenient that way. His eyes never left the image of the new girl standing there.

Jack moves to F-6.

The knight ignored the bickering between his guild members for the most part, almost having a laugh at the word 'guild' when he thought it. He kept an eye on the girl though, watching as she started casting some sort of charged spell, and already he was beginning to see strategies and formations integrating her style, most likely behind front lines to afford her the space to concentrate. Keine could stay back with her, picking off interlopers while he and Evelyn marched forward into melee, Seamus and Weo as a kind of shock trooper, spreading chaos and doing what they do best. They worked, strategically. Logistically even. Battle wasn't the problem though.

Jack surveyed this section of the gardens, picking his next target. There was another beetle cavorting about in the closest flower bed, but to get to it without trampling the flowers he'd have to head down and deal with a couple more beetles. He resigned himself to it and trudged up to the thing munching away on the precious greenery. "Hey!" He growled at it, and swept his sword up in a short charge, swinging the blade like a club. The blow knocked the beetle in the air and back a few feet into a pile of leaves on its back, kicking its legs in the air trying to right itself.

Natasha casts Finite Pyre at H5! Finite Pyre Cells are created! Bugsy and Noms are caught in the blast! 5 Int Fire Damage!

As the others continued their onslaught on the beetles, Natasha felt the mana she had been focusing on come into fruition. "Fires burn with all your might: Finite Pyre!" she chanted, pulling her arms back towards her and twirling on spot. The second she made a full circle she shot her arms forward, a burst of flame flying much farther to the other end of the path. In an instant the flames spread into a large circle which had successfully caught both of the beetles at that end in the blaze. Natasha smiled, happy to have finally gotten something done.

The moment Evelyn saw the orange light in front of her, she immediately jumped away as fast as she could as a fire rose from the ground, engulfing some of the pests and almost singing her. She could feel the heat of the fire though, and that was enough to make her back away from the site. Fortunately, her jumping away seemed to have caused the pests to miss their attacks and she was able to avoid taking any hits at all.

Fortune seemed to favor her, though not in the form of fire. Evelyn glanced to the side, seeing Jackie nearby. She quickly dashed over to his side, or, rather, behind him. The cover his much larger body provided helped shield her from the heat of the fire.

"Must every mage we come across have to know a fire spell?" Evelyn muttered mostly to herself, but her voice was loud enough for at least Jackie to hear. Most of their group knew how much she hated fire magic to begin with. Somewhat comforted by Jackie's body-shield, Evelyn stretched her right arm out, slashing at a nearby pest. She figured she ought to do something now that she was here.

Jack chuckled to himself listening to Evelyn. "Evidently." He replied, and nodded to her when she took down the beetle in front of him. Now to take care of the one buggering about his back. He considered the fire for a moment before seeing another beetle further back. Well, what an opportunity this was. The knight took a step forward to add momentum to the swing of his sword, a long strike that flung the overgrown insect into its companion further back. Jack flourished his sword with a grin, a bit pleased with himself.

Jack uses Rush [-8 MP] on Bugsy! 10 Atk damage, knocks target back two cells!

Keine moves to cell C-4

The flames that had spontaneously burst from the ground was quite the spectacle to watch, though it wasn't anything Keine hadn't seen before. Still it was fairly impressive considering the caster, whom Keine shot a quick glance back at, was such a young child. She flashed the child a quick smile before returning her attention to the insects, well the few of them that were left anyway. One of them on the side seemed to still be untouched and after positioning herself far enough from the other bugs to not allow them to distract her Keine drew back her bowstring. Within mere seconds another set of magically-formed arrows were sent flying, striking the bug with deadly precision.

Another hollow sphere found itself flying forward through the air, aimed at the bug that was just knocked back. Wikefno had dashed forward as Jack launched his attack, and followed up with one of his own, hoping to end the creature right there on the spot through their combined efforts. Their teamwork was already impeccable despite being a newly formed guild. They were making pretty quick work of the nuisances infesting the beautiful garden which definitely gave Wikefno some peace at mind. He had been so worried about the garden's sanctity, and now it seemed he had nothing to worry about at all. This mission was as good as a success. His attention had been diverted from his task, however, as he noticed the potential new guild member unleash her power--a blazing conflagration. It was quite awe-inspiring if thoughts of the garden going up in flame hadn't passed through his mind.

It'll be all right, I'm sure, Wikefno thought to himself, taking a deep breath and steadying himself. He figured he'd just go back to focusing on the task at hand instead of thinking about what-ifs. His master would disapprove if he were around and watching.

Natasha was practically in awe as the rest of the group switched formation and successively beat down most of the pests left standing. With only one left in their midst, she stepped forward and quickly thrust her hand toward the blaze enveloping it. "Leave your true mark: Diffusion!" she chanted, throwing her arm toward the beetle. In an instant the circular field of flame shot into the air and morphed from a hellish ring into a stream of fire that instantly targeted the beetle.

Like the two from before the third insect fell from just one (well technically three but who's counting) shot from her. The others were doing well on their own and she aimed her bow at the final pest. Positioning herself forward a few steps Keine drew back the bowstring and released it the moment enough energy gathered to form into the shape of an arrow.

Out of the corner of his eye and through the cloud of worries forming in his mind, Wikefno spied the solitary insect that had been left by its lonesome. Had they already sawed through the rest of the swarm? Their little motley guild was stronger than he once thought. Rolling along the ground and standing in front of Keine, being careful to only stand after she had loosed her attack, Wikefno took aim at the final and only target. It was done. A split second charge and a blazing ray of heat surged through the air, hopefully tearing through the remaining insect with no mercy.
