The Adventures of Naletia: Ancient Civilization

Aria stood patiently as Nemile studied the map. It was not a totally necessary action, but a useful one nonetheless. She, on the other hand, waited patiently looking more bored by the minute. And though she did not physically show it, she was staring at the wyvern who was studying her through peripherals. It seemed to have taken to watching her; She believed it to be because of their little battle the other day. She had bested Nemile in the colosseum, the creature probably didn't like that very much.

The little fox, however, was not studying Nemile as her companion was to his master. He had already deemed the woman as a fine companion, at least because his master had. He had no problem traveling with her, nor did he have problem traveling with the wyvern. But if for some reason a problem occurred between them and Aria, he would step in. He was not sure they could handle the large creature but they could easily deal with the Paladin.

When the gates were finally opened, Aria remained silent and gathered up Nocturne with a single movement. It was time to go to the temple and figure out the cause behind these beast attacks.

The two humans and their companions ventured into the forest, not knowing what lie ahead of them in waiting. They did not realize that they were being watched by any sort of creature, but this was indeed the truth. A group of beasts stalked and watched as the party entered further into their territory. Under normal circumstances, the humans would have been left alone, but this was a different scenario.

Out from behind the trees, four wolves jumped out and confronted the small party, their growls letting them know that these wolves were indeed, hostile. They would have to deal with the threat carefully.

"Four wolves," Nemile counted quickly, frowning, "And hostile. Is it just a biological effect? Is there a new generation that does not know friendship with humans? Or is something affecting their mental state? Either way, watch out Aria. This could get dangerous."

Aria set down Nocturne as the wolves jumped out to meet them. A rather irritating obstacle, but one that the group could handle. Focusing in on the nearest two wolves, she nodded with a slight smile. Her eyes darted over to the other two and the smile faded but returned. The other two were able to handle magic, but none of them seemed very resistant to it. Not a problem whatsoever, just a minor annoyance.

"I'd suggest going after the front two first, Nemile."

Aria nodded in response and moved into place next to Nemile, eyes focused on the one that the Wyvern attacked. While Nemile needed to prepare first, she had all of her preparation complete prior. Raising her right hand into the air, she brought down every finger but the pointer and focused even harder on the wolf. With a minor swirl of her finger, a flame ignited and began to grow in size until it became roughly the size of a baseball. Bringing the flaming ball to her palm, she quickly chucked it over at the wolf and watched as it caught fire.

The fox, noticing Aria start fighting turned to look at her for a moment. When she nodded, he took a few steps forward and then did something rather peculiar. He began to tighten his muscles and crouch before suddenly springing forward. Though what happened next was strange, he began to spin in forward circles constantly until he bounced on top of the wolf.

"You're in the way!" Nemile shouted, rushing up the the wolf that had cast magic, raising her tempered sword in the air before bringing it down upon the poor dog's shoulder, slicing through a tendon and drawing blood. She wasn't worried about her companion. Ralu was more than capable of handling himself in a brawl. He could probably take each one of these wolves out without any help. Nemile did not worry about that. What she DID worry about was the hostility of the creatures they were fighting. Nemile never before saw such angry expressions of hatred towards humans, especially from wolves. Nemile kept her eyes peeled, searching for some sign that would lead her to the conclusion she searched for.

Ralu looked back at his partner-of-soul Nemile. The paladin was doing well, already beginning to attack one of the other little puppies. Ralu looked back down at the wolves that were attacking him. He paid too much attention to dodging the first wolves' attack and was struck on both sides. But it didn't hurt. It was like being pinched. He felt it for a second, then the sensation disappeared. Ralu was never one to bleed like humans. His scales were much to tough to pierce with mere wolf fangs. His own fangs, however, were more than enough to sink in the hot, meaty flesh of the canine hounds.

Ralu quickly spun around and lashed out at another wolf, attaching to it and draining his poison into the wolf's veins. With any luck, the wolf would be poisoned just like the other one. Nothing stood a chance against Ralu's deadly poison.

A quick swirl of her finger and a small sphere of flame appeared at her finger tip. She directed the small flame at her target and brought her other hand up to yawn. The battle was beginning to bore the woman. Oh dear.

"My range, huh?" Nemile didn't look back at Aria, she needed to stay focused on the wolf, which was now spitting fire at her. Nemile yelped suddenly as some of the flames snuck past her raised shield and licked her arm, where some skin was showing. How typical, that the fire would manage to sneak past her shield and lick the only spot on her body besides her neck and head that actually showed skin. Nemile shivered slightly, shaking off the pain like only a paladin could. "That's not such a bad idea," Nemile continued, acknowledging Aria's suggestion and putting some thought into it. It certainly wasn't a bad idea, A ranged ability would certainly be useful. Nemile did have her Energy Field ability, which was ranged, but it wasn't much for dealing damage as it was for debilitating the enemy a little bit.

"I'll see what I can come up with," Nemile promised, flashing a smile at Aria before shoving her sword into the wolf in front of her.

Ralu's red eyes blinked lethargically. He couldn't seem to keep his vision completely straight. It was a distraction, for sure, but it shouldn't make him miss the enemy that he smelled. Wyverns never relied on sight alone for attacking. Ralu turned around towards another wolf that was attacking, and missing. He wouldn't let all the attacks hit him, that would be foolish and embarrassing. Ralu lashed out, once again with his poisonous fangs.

"Good to hear." Aria said plainly as she swirled her index finger in the air again. Another ball of flame appeared at the fingertip, only this time rather than throwing it, she brought her fingers together. Passing the ball of flame from fingertip to fingertip, Aria smiled; This was the most amusing thing all battle so far. However, her amusement faded when she finally chucked the sphere of flame at the wolf.

Able to move his limbs once more, the fox charged at the wolf the wyvern and his master had attacked. With a simple lunge and spin, the fox barreled through the air and at his target. A rather stylish landing brought all of the tiny fox's weight on the wolf before he bounded back over to his position.

"Yikes!" Nemile yelped, her entire body shivering uncontrollably. The wolf shocked her! She didn't expect such an attack to be so electrifying, especially coming from a wolf. Nemile attempted to shake it off, but it was useless. She did not have control over her limbs, they were too frazzled to be of any use to her. It didn't help that her burn was itchy. But as it was now, Nemile would soon regain her stamina very quickly.

Ralu looked back at his partner-of-his-soul. She seemed to be dealing with a bit of a tight spot. He wasn't tired, but decided that resting in the air would be the right thing to do in this situation. Nemile might need him for something important, he couldn't go and waste all of his energy. Ralu glared down at the wolves that attacked him, one of which missed. His flight was surely proving to be a pain in their side, for sure.

Now Nemile could not do anything, what a downer. A sigh escaped Aria's lips as she quickly conjured another fireball and chucked it at the wolf. How could the wolves not see how pointless this all was? The party now outnumbered them and they would be dead fairly soon. Not to mention they were attacking the two party members who could easily withstand their attacks. Aria was dealing the most damage here.

"Ralu! Come to me!" Nemile suddenly called, her hand outstretched. Ralu immediately responded and zoomed over to her location. Nemile quickly grabbed onto Ralu's thick neck and swung herself around and mounted the wyvern, raising her sword and shield triumphantly. "Charge!" Nemile cried, pointing down at the last male wolf. Ralu growled fiercely and rammed right into the wolf, Nemile's strange magic causing his horns to glow an iridescent color.

A yawn escaped the Elementalist's lips as she instead raised her right hand. A single pointed finger called for a small flame, which quickly took shape in the form of a sphere. It floated out in front of her for a moment before Aria chucked it. My, how boring this was becoming.

Nemile grinned as she saw the wolf fall to a crumpled mess before her and her mighty wyvern friend. But, looking over to where the other wolf was supposed to be, Nemile was surprised not to see it, until she heard barking behind her. Ralu swung arond so she could see better, and Nemile gasped as she saw the wolf attacking Aria, her newest friend. She may be able to handle the attack, but still, Nemile didn't like seeing her friends being attacked.

"Hold on Aria, we're on our way!" Nemile called, kicking her heels into Ralu and he shot forward, spinning around so Nemile could swing her arm down and slice right through the wolf with a strong arm.

No, that would not be happening; she would like to think that she was a little more skilled in the art of battle than that. Chucking another fireball at the target, she turned to the little fox kit, who nodded in response to her unvocalized command.

ATT: I have a few things to say about the experience table later. This system isn't working. For now, I'm going to post a little segment that you can reply to while I figure out some changes of how I want things to go. You can disregard the experience for now, I'll let you know what changes I've made later.

Nemile slid off her companion's left wing, quickly hopping to where the fallen wolf was. She intended to treat it's injuries, but the wolf would have not of it. It jumped back up and snarled at her before darting off towards its companions. Nemile watched as the pack of wolves howled their defeat and ran off. Ralu was about to go after them, but a look from the paladin was enough to stop him. Nemile brushed some of her hair and sweat away from her brow and turned to Aria, her newest companion.

"That was the strangest thing," Nemile said, looking a little sad. It was true what they said about paladins, they really hated fighting even hostile beasts. Though it may also have to do with the way the world was, them having lived peacefully beside beasts until this age. Something was changing. "Are you alright, Aria? I hope they didn't hurt you too bad. It's such a shame, I think I knew that wolf pack before." Nemile looked back in the direction the wolves ran off in, distracted by the thoughts of friends racing through her mind.

Aria ran her hands over her dress to smooth it out and wipe off any dirt that had managed to get on her. She paid little attention to the wound on her arm, knowing it was not that bad and that she could easily fix the damage. Nemile was quick to come check up on her and the Elementalist nodded, her lips parting just a bit. "I am fine." she breathed her response, looking down to Nocturne who appeared to be out of energy still. "Are you alright?" Aria asked aloud, her question pointed towards both of her friends, though mostly the Paladin as she seemed emotionally upset.

Nemile nodded once, not really meaning she was okay. Ralu had come over and pressed his head to her chest, so she hugged him. It broke her heart to hurt the wolves, even if they were the ones who attacked. Nemile let go of Ralu and he floated away a little, so Nemile could have some space to talk to Aria.

"I'll be fine," Nemile said, "More importantly, now that I've seen the violence that has taken over beasts first-hand, I think I have an idea of what might be going on. But it's hard to make sense of it. The monks of Igersten might be able to shed some light on the situation." More howling in the distance, the wolves from before? No, this was another, larger pack. Nemile frowned at the sound.

"I don't think it's safe to stick around too long," Nemile said, after the howling stopped, "we should press on."

Aria nodded and picked up Nocturne, who quickly settled into her arms and laid perfectly still as always. "Getting to the monks as soon as possible would be in everyone's best interest." the Elementalist commented as she pet the small fox, her gaze lifting from his small form after a moment to settle on Nemile. "I don't want to harm the wolves... or other creatures more than necessary. Preferably not at all." she added whilst looking up the path to where the wolves had scattered. She could not help but wonder if there were more waiting up ahead to ambush them, and if they would be able to get away without harming them.

So with Aria and Nemile in agreement, they and their companions tread on through the forest, aptly named Miracle Forest, for strange things happened in these woods that only one thing could explain: magic. These woods were filled with a natural magic that spread from the tall trees to each blade of grass that wavered ever so slightly in the wind. This magic was what gave the inhabitants sentient life, for this was the only forest that had trees that could move.

One such tree sensed the traveling four nearby, and ruffled it's leaves, almost as if it was angry. The ground beneath them shook as the tree's roots began to rise up out of the ground. Cracking wood filled the air, silencing the tranquil hum of birds and insects. The tree's massive trunk wobbled from side to side as it gathered itself to face Aria and Nemile.

"Um, I don't think it's very happy with us," Nemile said, a bit shakily. She wasn't too fond of trees that moved so deliberately. She doubted that anyone else felt differently from her if they were in her situation. After all, the last thing you want is an angry tree. "I've heard about trees that could uplift their roots and move, but I've never seen it myself." Now was not the time to be awestruck, however.

"A treant." Aria replied, eyes wide as she scanned the creature. The elementalist, herself, had never fought one but they were fairly common back home. Fire was typically the way to get rid of them, but she had heard several stories about them detailing the use of magic to protect themselves. If this treant was like those in the stories, her magic might not be as effective as it had been against the wolves. She could still try though; she had no intention of sitting around and letting Nemile do all of the work.

"Be careful if you get close to it." the elementalist added, her gaze drifting over to her ally. Her gaze then quickly fell to her pet who nodded almost immediately in response. With a short leap from her arms the little fox trotted over to the frontline and waited for the others to move forward.

"Very well." Aria replied, though her volume was next to nothing as she said it. Instead her focus drifted from the treant to the surrounding area, surrounded in folliage, some that even their enemy was covered by. Treants could stop magic from hurting them directly but what about indirectly? Though the thought of burning the forest did not appeal to the Elementalist, she knew it might prove useful in their battle. With that in mind she took two steps forward.

The elementalist came to a halt, raised her right hand, and closed her eyes. Mana began to work through her system, a slightly visible coating of it turning red before a small flickering flame appeared in her head. Aria's eyes then opened back up rather quickly and with a simple movement of the arm the ball of flame was flung, though not at the treant. Rather one of the bushes nearby caught the flame and as expected more began to catch fire. "Sorry..."

Nocturne watched on passively as the others began to strike the frogs hanging from the tree and his master began to burn the bushes. It was an interesting strategy from the latter to say the least, something he himself likely would have tried had he been able. Without any fire, however, the little fox was left to his own devices, one of which he figured would not work against the physically defensive tree. So instead of just sitting back and trying to figure some way to make the failed-before-attempted tactic work he trotted over.

As soon as the little creature was positioned behind Ralu is just stopped all movement, save his tiny maw which opened only slightly. After a moment a series of sweet sounds and mews came from the fox, mana imbued into the strange melody began to create a small mist in the area. If the magic worked, then their problems definitely would not be so big anymore.
