Matthias rolled his eyes. “It looks like we’ve been paired up again. Shall we?”

“I think bar-hopping is out of the question.”

“There are other ways of obtaining information!” As soon as those words left Matthias’s mouth, he was rudely knocked over to the side. The shove had been too forceful to be an accident. He whipped around to confront whomever had rammed into him.

“I’d appreciate an apology, preferably sincere but beggars can’t be choosers.”

Matthias tensed. More cloaked men? He wanted to tear the cloak off the offender and throw it to the ground and then stomp on it, not that that would accomplish anything, but Matthias felt like acting irrational. He figured he had the right to let loose and be mad. But he refrained.

At any rate, Matthias missed his chance. The cloaked person removed the hood of the garment, revealing a man. The man wasn’t Lowell, that much was evident.

“My sincerest apologies, young man. I wasn’t watching where I was going. Would you like a scone?” The man held open his cloak and revealed a basket in his off-hand. He lifted the covering off the top of the basket’s contents, offering a batch of pastries.

Matthias shook his head, and the man looked nonplussed at being refused. “I baked them myself. Are you sure? Fine,” the man snorted, “You know, you shouldn’t go around poking your nose where it doesn’t belong. Someone might try to gas you.”

“Was that a threat?” Frederic asked, resting his hand upon the hilt of his sword.

“Must everything come down to violence!” the man exclaimed. “Why does everyone want to hurt poor Kendall! Have you men no hearts? No families of your own?” He went on and on, “I bet your mother wasn’t very fond of you! And you’ve decided to take vengeance upon the world that has shunned you--But, no! That’s not how life works, sonny-boy!”

Matthias could feel the blood vessels in his temples throb. He let out a sigh and shook his head. “You have it all wrong. If you would just move aside, we’ll be on our way.”

“Is that any way to respect your elders?”

“I wasn’t aware that I had to respect sociopaths.”

Frederic eased up and let his arm relax. Matthias had this under control.

“Yes, well, you do. Especially if those sociopaths just so happen to be me. Now then! I demand that you take me to your leader.” This man was insane.

But Matthias felt like playing along. “I’m the self-appointed leader of our five-man team,” - he stuffed his hands in his pockets - “Keep talking.”
