Hacking Life

3178 years ago, life on earth changed. A meteor shower from the far reaches of the galaxy hit the atmosphere and vaporized, scattering its particles to the wind. Reacting with the air, organic material rapidly mutated into to most deadly virus known to man. Within day, it spread over the entire planet and, due to its rapid rate of replication, became integrated into the atmosphere. Millions died within a few months, the virus decaying their bodies. All forms of animal life started to decay once they passed the state of adolescence. Only those under 25 (in humans,) with their growth hormones above a critical level, survived. There was no cure, only treatments that prolonged suffering. No one on earth was uninfected; babes caught it with their first breath. But there was hope.

Using the hundreds of MMORGs available as a base, researchers, programmers and engineers made facilities that allowed humans to live out their lives unconscious in tubes, their minds in a cybernetic world. Machines grew and harvested food supplies and converted matter to essential nutrients to maintain the body. Live went on. Couples meet in the virtual world and their bodies moved to adjacent cells. A child was born in test tubes via artificial insemination. Being a virtual world, murder and disease became non-existent, buffers programmed into place to prevent that, and humans lived well past 100 years before dying of old age; their bodies recycled to nourish the rest. Aside from the virtual world, the MMORGs still existed and became the way to pass time and earn money for some.

Unfortunately, the virus mutated again and infected a robot. Thos spread rapidly and the continent of Australia was lost to the new biomechanical menace before the Administrators could have the machines create defences. After that the virus, now a sentient collective consciousness called the Menace, launched attacks on the virtual world. Even worse, Menace had found a way that could kill people, despite the buffer; the Deathloader. And the people killed this way released a small pulse of energy that killed others that were within two feet and their body would kill others if used for nutrients. The Administrators developed an anti-program to that attack, the Immunity Code, but it was too complex; to distribute it to every human, so they did the next best thing. They created protection fields for the entire world and tied the program to them, a triggered the system to activate whenever Menace attacked so they could contain the invaders and prevent needless deaths.

The last thing the Administrators did was to form small groups to hack into Menace’s mainframe and destroy the virus there. It was discovered that Menace’s fire-walls were too strong to break though with an army, but weaker where it was connected to the game levels. Using this, they formed elite teams using teens, who proved immune to Menace’s worst viruses, to break in through the MMORGs. Armed with the Breakout program, an offensive version of the Immunity code, they would fight bad Menace. But time is limited. Menace has developed a new version of the deathloader; the Overloader. Who will survive this ultimate war? The humans; rulers of earth, or the Menace; the newly evolved potential conquerors?

New ability~ Breakout

The breakout is a two-part ability (It has two options). The first part is similar to a D-ability, but requires a full Drive gauge. This is called Breakout Strike. The gauge adds one point per successful basic attack and two for a a-ability. The base power is the same as a D-ability. The second part doubles all stats for three turns and uses half the max gauge This is call Breakout Boost. Also, there is an exp bonus for using it, not a penalty.

"Your predefined character data has been modified players," the shadowy form at the center of the large semicircle said, using the official term for the members. About fifty other shadows sat around the shape at two levels, the four members of the team standing in the only ring of light in the room. "The programming will allow you to utilize both the Immunity Code and the Breakthrough Code. For now, use them sparingly. Avoid attracting the attention of Menace as much as possible."

"For the same reason, we cannot alter the game code to make your characters strong enough to face Menace without warning it and allow it to improve its fire wall and defenses." The administrator that spoke was seated to the far left. "Because of this, you will have to play through the game and raise your character's power the normal way."

A square of light appeared in front of them, displaying the map of the game world. "You will be participating in the game Other Life. The overlap to Menace's level is at this location. You will have to find out how to get there yourself." With that, the administrators abruptly loaded them into the game, leaving the players in the center of a forest clearing. A large window popped up.

Welcome to Other Life; the newest and largest MMORG currently running. Users; Jaison, Fai, Hakaatsu and Kendal are registered for play. Explore, fight and Have fun! Your legend now starts!

The window faded in a few seconds, leaving the clearing empty. Small flowers dotting the edges and a light wind wafting through the tree, it was pleasant and calming. But the peace didn't last long a low howl rose up from the trees behind them followed by a fierce screeching. From opposite sides of the clearing, two large birds of prey flapped into view. They squawked their anger at the party. Through gaps in the tree, three growling wolfs could be glimpsed. Ever helpful, another window popped up.

"Perfect," Jaison fumed as he drew his sword. "Leave it to the Administrators to drop us in the middle of a war."

Kendal starts at H4!

He wasn't sure what he was supposed to be, but with the laptop at his side, he figured he was running the game. Setting up, he knew he would be weaker than the others in battle. Starting up a basic program, he found a birds eye view of the map. From here it would be easy.

Fai had a smile on his face, his allies' names were all intresting, and he couldn't be more thrilled to fight alongside these intresting characters. Although, Fai was a bid disappointed with having to fight animals the first thing upon arriving here, he wanted to have a bit of time to socialize, but he still had a smile on his face.

"Okay, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to fight so soon, but alright then." Fai said while twirling his staff.

Jaison moves to K6

Jaison darted across the gap in the trees and eyed the wolves from his new vantage point. He frowned slightly. This job might be a last ditch effort by the Admins to stop the virus, but it was just way to break the monotony of his life to him. But in the end, it was still a game, and he always played to win it. If beating the menace was a part of winning, so be it. He took a breath and chanted one of the sayings encoded in his character data.
"I am the bone of my sword, my soul the edge of the blade; Sword of the Strong."
The sword seemed to pulse as energy suffused both him and it. Now, bring on the pigeons and the puppies.

Fai followed the swordsman and held his staff pointing at one of the wolves. The staff glowed as black mana formed together in front of the staff, forming into a cresent shape and circling the wolf multiple times before striking it.

With an annoyed squawk, the bird Hakatsu attack flew to the safety of a nearby tree. From it's save roost, it threw three sharp feathers from it's breast at the boy.

The wolves were efficiently hunting him. Jaison had to give them credit, they were brave, smart and strong. If the last one had howled earlier, he just might not have survived. Unfortunately for them, he wasn't exactly helpless. The wrapping on the hilt of his sword squeaked as he tightened his grip. The sword pulsed as he rose it over his head to slash twice at the wolf to his left. Each time the sword ripped through the beast's flesh, it pulsed with power, the wolf yelping as it did. It fell over, lifeblood spilling on the forest floor.

Jaison yelled as the wolf ripped the muscle of his leg. With a wound like that, he wasn't going to be able to move away. As luck would have it, the attack that Fai used managed to confuse the wolf behind, leading it to attack it's comrade. Silently sending a prayer of thanks to the games OS, he dispatched the wolf before him.

Suddenly an arrow whizzed past the allies and struck Kendal in the neck. He grunted, unable to believe what was just happening. His vision blurred and he looked over to where the arrow had come from. The girl, she was so strange looking, but he couldn't say anything. He fell over and she landed in his position.

Kai kicked the body and it disappeared into Data fragments. Taking her Crossbow out, she pointed at one of the several foes.

Remembering that he heard something about the birds and wolves being in a territory war, Fai moved out of the way. He didn't want to be attacked again, those feathers hurt like hell!

"Ow! Those feathers are like razors! What are these birds? Emo or something?" Fai spoke, to no one in particular, he just had a habit of adding his own commented anytime he could.

Jaison was worried. He had little energy left judging by the small bit of red on his HP bar, and the wolf was breathing in his face. Worse, he still couldn't move. Bad. Then there was the bird a few feet away. A mean and angry looking bird. Very bad. The good news was that the wolves and birds didn't like each other. So he made use of that. He drew his sword and muttered another chant.
"These hands of mine grasp at nothing, this sword of mine wanders the void; Sword of the Stray."
As completed the chant, white energies started to waft gently off his blade, trailing slightly as he moved the sword. He nodded with satisfaction.
