Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Demon, was Auza's first thought then. But no, this woman was something a little more than that. If she could call herself the most powerful witch in existence, there was bound to be proof behind the claim. Time had stopped; No ordinary witch could have possibly done this. But this was all unnecessary. They were not losing time, but Auza was never one to deliberately waste it. It was a frustrating concept that threatened to drive her completely mad. She was getting angry as well. Who does this woman think she is, anyway? Auza could not care less about where she was from, perhaps she should have left out the "who are you" part of her question. Maybe then the woman would have stopped at just her name, which Auza had already and deliberately forgotten.

She's toying with me, Auza realized, her eyes narrowing to slits as she scrutinized the witch in front of her. This witch knew exactly who Auza was, and she was toying with her, making her speak first. And this witch could grant wishes? Auza couldn't have been less impressed. If this woman knew who she was, then she should know how much Auza didn't care about wishful thinking.

"Not interested." Auza stated flately, still very much unamused by this witch's appearance. "You are wasting your breath on me, witch. Return time to normal and let us be on our way, I have much more important matters than exchanging words with a witch who is caught up in her own, insignificant agenda." Most powerful witch in existence? Auza didn't care in the slightest.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

The witch of Autumn's Trace was appeared immensely amused at Auza's response, smirking at her trying to hold back a chuckle that was welling up within her lithe frame.  Oh this was her witch, all right.  However, she didn't realize that the Reality Witch had not come to grant wishes, at least not as a main prerogative.  No, there was something far more sinister at work here, something that threatened to alter reality in a way that the Reality Witch did not seem fit.  She thought it best to intervene now rather than to step in later, but whether or not this intervention could shape the future...well, that had yet to be seen.  Perhaps this would not be her only encounter with Auza in her crew but for now there was pressing business to attend to.  Her eyes suddenly glowed with a vivid light and she waved her hand stirring the gusts into a tizzy, but time was still halted.  However, reality began to bend, their surroundings twisting and warping into nothingness until there was naught but darkness around them, yet they could see each other very clearly against the blackened backdrop.  A few seconds past and the winds died down, twinkles of light piercing the veil of everlasting, omnipresent black.  Swirls of violet and green and beautiful twilit orange seeped into the area.  Planets could be seen looming in the distance as more stars came into view around them.  A translucent violet barrier appeared beneath them serving as their platform as they essentially floated through an unknown realm of space.

"You will find my agenda not so self-serving when I tell you this, Auza, the Oblivion Witch," the witch of Autumn's Trace asserted forcefully, her tone growing dire.  "Your Eternia is in peril.  And I have come to set things straight through any means necessary."

Klein had been completely bewildered this whole time but when the witch spoke her last words, his vacant, awestruck eyes fell upon Auza.  What was this Eternia that she spoke of?  It obviously had something to do with Auza but if this woman wanted to harm her, that was out of the question.  The apprentice drew his blades and readied himself for battle, waving his swords about expertly, taunting the witch that had spirited them away to some strange cosmic place.  Klein felt uneasy not having a true solid ground to stand on, but he wasn't about to let that get in the way.  "Time to stop talking out of your ass, lady!" Klein shouted energetically, his muscles tensed and ready to spring him forth in an assault.  He had no idea the kind of power this witch possessed but if he was to die saving Auza...  Is that really a sacrifice I'm willing to make?  He glanced over at the adamant, resolute Auza who was sure to survive regardless for she was no pushover.  Heh, I guess it always has been.  With a smile on his face, he remained quiet, gathering his focus as his teacher had instructed, who in fact looked upon him now with a calm smile on her face.  Macha had long since realized that this fight was not to be a serious one.  There was something that this woman was going to show them; the blademaster was positive.  It was just a matter of time.

"Step lightly, friends," Macha stated lightly, drawing her own blade, but not entering the graceful stance she usually took to upon starting a battle.  "There's no telling what tricks she has up those gorgeous sleeves of hers."

"You are sticking your nose in a place where it does not belong," Auza growled, her eyes becoming daggers as she glared dangerously at the witch. But the witch knew more about Auza than she cared to think about. If she knew about Eternia, how much more did the witch claim to know? Auza had never spoken of Eternia to anyone. It's creation was done long ago, after Veign had died protecting her. It served to trap any demon who went into the realms of man to cause chaos, and it was the place that Auza sent that demon.

To her side, Auza noticed that Macha didn't much move. She had, too, realized that there would not so much be a fight here. Auza had no desire to fight the one who claimed to be the most powerful witch in existence. Which, in and of itself seemed to be some kind of joke. The Witch of Reality may not exist in any reality, which would make her the only witch. Auza would wait this time, she would be patient, though that patience was slowly becoming thinner.

Auza starts at J-7

Player Phase 1!

Klein moves to E5.

"All right, lady, let's see if you can keep up!!" Klein exclaimed as he dashed forward fearlessly. Whether that confidence originated from true bravery or stupidity was left to question. He stood there with a cocky grin, holding his swords expertly, his control and stance having improved quite a bit since Macha started training him. Even still, he had no idea what this woman who claimed to be the most powerful witch of them all was capable of. How quickly would he meet his demise should she so choose to merely smite him? Could she just erase his existence? He was afraid to think about his next actions because she could probably read his mind. He found himself beginning to lose focus but he could see Macha in his mind with a disapproving look upon her face. No, he had to stamp everything out and focus. Taking a deep breath, he calmed himself and voided his mind, his only thought on attacking this woman, not thinking about how. He would let his instincts guide him.

Klein uses Focus! [User ATK and Critical Hit Rate +10%]

Henry casts Peaceful Resolution! [Positive status duration x2]

MP: 88/100

Henry set about scrawling away though he wasn't too enraptured in the threat of battle. He wrote about peace and how conflicts could be settled without bloodshed. It was this kind of conflict that he figured held no danger. Perhaps there would be blood, but he didn't think they would have to worry about dying. Not here. He glanced at the nonchalant Macha; she was just as unworried as he appeared to be which only served to make the hope in his heart shine that much brighter. But this was about Auza. "Is everything all right, Miss Auza? This woman does not know of what she speaks, right?" he sought confirmation, extremely worried about what Auza might be keeping from them because he, a master of stories, felt as though they weren't getting the full one from Auza.

Henry waits.

Macha moves to C6.

"Let's see how real things are." Macha tread across the platform, the lack of visible solid ground not affecting her speed or balance at all. She skidded to a halt while slashing at the witch when she drew near enough, spinning rapidly for another slash and bringing the sword upwards and into a defensive stance with such fluidity that would be expected of a blademaster of her caliber. The witch appeared to be unfazed which was probably for the best. It would be sad to see such a beautiful dress torn to ribbons. "Now why is someone so important as yourself meddling in our affairs, or rather the affairs of our friend?" She gestured loosely to Auza, lowering her guard, not particularly fearing a counterattack. "You mess with her and you mess with us, you see. We're bonded by much more than what can be comprehensible, even to one such as yourself," the blademaster put plainly, keeping a rather amused smirk on her face, the one she wore when she was sure she held all the cards and nobody around her knew her hand.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Auza weaved her hand through the air, summoning a very familiar glyph to take form. She concentrated on that, perhaps it would serve to distract her from this witch. She knew not what she spoke of? Auza was not sure about that. If the witch knew about Eternia, then she must know of what dwells within that realm. It is a place separated from the Abyss, but also connected to it. It is a realm that only those with a very deep connection to magic can enter, else their bodies would be destroyed by the unstable currents that ravage the demons within.

Auza cast her magic with half the effort that she normally gave. It was a simple spell, though it has proven to be necessary in every battle they fought. One day, perhaps, Auza would find a way to set that spell to be cast automatically. Or maybe not. It barely took any energy to cast now. Before it took up a great sum of her mana, but since then, her pool has grown large. She would not run out of mana easily. Not anymore.

Auza casts Bonds of Protection on Macha! Klein is Chained to the effects! Grants Immunity.

MP Cost is reduced to 12 (75%).

MP: 108/120

"This is not the time to discuss that,"
Auza replied to Henry in a quiet voice. Auza did not intend to tell Henry, or the others, what Eternia is at all. It would not do to get them involved in such dangerous magic, Macha and Klein especially. The connection to magic those two had was minimal at best. Henry was still young. If any of them could know of Eternia, it would have to be Vincent, and Auza will never speak to him about it.

No, this witch had to leave. Now.

The Witch of Autumn's Trace uses Land of Dreams!

MP: 4204/4225

The Witch smiled and waved her fan slowly in front of her face.  As she did, the whole of the area wavered and warped before all color drained and all shapes melded together in a horrible spinning greyscale blob that grew smaller and smaller until there was nothing but darkness.  There was a flash of light and the group found themselves in a different land.  They were in a stone clearing surrounded by towering crag.  Around the edges there were skeletons of deceased warriors, their weapons in great disrepair.  How long had they been there?  The Witch didn't bother taking in her new surroundings.

"I'm afraid this is the perfect time to speak of it.  Are you worried about what your allies will think?  Do you think it won't concern them?"  The Witch appeared to find this greatly amusing.  What a silly girl.  "You're going to wind up dragging them down with you.  I am here to aid you so that it doesn't happen, Auza.  What will you tell them when the time comes to take care of it?  Leave them completely ignorant, even after all you would have gone through by that time?"

A loud roar came from an opening in the ring of crag--the only opening, in fact.  Footsteps could be heard emanating from the dark tunnel.  The ground quaked with each one...

The Witch of Autumn's Trace waits, seemingly unfazed by Macha's assault.

As Macha launched her attack, a weird pressure fell upon his body making him feel weaker. He looked around to see the scenery changing. That, mixed with the strange field the woman had erected, made him nauseous and he doubled over trying not to wretch. When things finally settled down, he looked up with a bit of a cold sweat on his brow. The area had changed. They were in some kind of arena with only one exit--a dark tunnel leading to only the gods knew where. Hell, were they even in Berbatu anymore? The witch spouted more nonsense about Auza dragging them down but he was unconcerned. He lunged forth and launched an assault, slash after powerful slash, but the woman blew off his attacks as if they were nothing. "It doesn't matter what Auza has to go through, we'll always be there for her!" Klein growled, keeping his blades brandished.

Henry casts Facts Come Together on Auza! [Bestows Doublecast]

MP: 80/100

It became evident without an answer that this woman knew many, many things. She was even capable of transporting them to another realm. Surely the only way to get back was to defeat her, but with his wisdom, Henry knew that would be impossible. They were messing with an undefeatable entity here. Regardless, he knew he would have to support until the very end. Klein was absolutely right. "Miss Auza, know that you are free to keep your secrets; it matters not to us. In all of your endeavors, we will be most happy to assist you. No matter what it takes," the lad said reassuringly, scribbling down more words on his parchment allowing Auza's mind to clear. If she wanted to cast some spells, it would not be much easier for her to do so.

Henry waits.

Macha attacks The Witch of Autumn's Trace! 3 hits! 32 Dark Dmg! CRITICAL!! 21 Dark Dmg! 21 Dark Dmg! (ATK)

"How troublesome." Macha was instantly aware that her attack had triggered some sort of field that surrounded the Witch. This magic was extremely potent. The defensive properties were unreal. It would make it that much more difficult to damage the woman, and it was at this point that Macha perhaps regretted not becoming a master archer or something of the sort. She waved her blade through the air and felt it as an extension of herself. It was a part of her body. No, she wouldn't trade being a blademaster for anything. Even after the realm had shifted, she lashed out with her blade, striking three times but the attacks were definitely weaker. She felt less force behind her blows and she grimaced. It was worse than she had thought. What was even more troublesome, however, was the obvious approach of some sort of being who made itself known by its heavy footsteps--heavy enough to make the earth tremble. Looking at the deceased warriors at the side of the clearing, she wondered if the advancing lifeform was the cause. Perhaps they were meant to join the corpses? Macha's playful smile returned and she entered a more serious battle stance.

Macha waits.

"SILENCE!" Auza barked, practically throwing her own arm off to the side. She could feel her own muscles strain, the effort clear in her head. She felt a chill coming across her, a cold anger that threatened to freeze the world around her. She took a few steps to the side, so that she had a clear view of her target. Auza put her hand at her side and began to draw upon her mana. A dark orb, sparkling with vile magic formed at her side. At the same time, her body began to glow, her aura turning black as she allowed her own magic to empower her.

With a single gesture, she sent the orb of magic up, turning it into a beam of condensed energy that made the ground shake as it unleashed her power. Raw, intellectual power. Auza had enough of all off this. That much was clear if she was choosing to deal damage rather than support the other sources of damage.

The footsteps grew louder and louder until the source of the sounds and quakes was finally revealed, lumbering out of the darkness of the tunnel.  It was a giant quadrupedal beast, its body covered in bulging muscle mass that would put bodybuilders to great shame.  It was covered in very short coarse fur that was strange--it was all black save for beautiful white pinpoints of light, swirls of violet and beige that looked like galaxies.  As it moved and gazed around with its glowing red eyes, the lights and swirls depicted on its body seemed to move as well.  It was a strange and wondrous sight, but its ivory claws gripped the ground, and saliva flew out of its mouth as it let out a horrid roar.  It would be a struggle to put this beast down.  Would the Witch be watching the struggle from afar?

The Cosmolith recharges from its previous attack!

Klein moves to B5.

Just like that, the witch vanished leaving them stranded in a strange land that could have been anywhere.  They probably weren't even on Alidaire anymore.  The footsteps grew louder, meanwhile, and the next thing he knew, he was surrounded by such light that he flinched and let out a scream.  It burned his skin and made his whole body feel hot.  He felt a bit nauseous as he tried to recover, and when he looked up, he saw the hulking, night sky-themed behemoth standing before him.  Was this some sort of test?  Or maybe the witch was done toying around with them and this was her little drop-off point for her toys.  "I am nobody's toy!!!" Klein shouted, jumping up and down before dashing forward, laying into the beast with courage that could almost be mistaken for foolishness.

"A troubling turn in the story for sure, wouldn't you say, Miss Auza?" Henry spoke rather lightheartedly about the situation, granted that was his typical demeanor.  He noted that the magical zone the woman deployed was gone with her presence, but did the fact that they were not transported back to Berbatu signify that she had not truly left at all?  "What do you say, Miss Auza?  Our troublesome Witch hasn't gone anywhere, am I correct?"  Henry jotted down some exciting plot turns, focusing them towards Klein who seemed to be struggling hitting the enemy vital points.

Henry waits.

More tricks and turns?  Was she too good to dispose of them herself?  Oh no, there was quite more to this than met the eye.  She shook her head at her disciple's recklessness, but hearing Henry's words gave her faith.  There was no doubt that the Witch wasn't done with them yet.  She knew they would be able to dispatch this beast with no issues whatsoever.  For what purpose, Macha had no idea.  But if it was on the tasklist, the blademaster was more than happy to oblige.  Saying nothing, she merely smirked and raised her blade, sharpening her mind and bracing herself for the impending onslaught she was about to unleash.

Macha uses Focus! [User ATK and CHR +10%]

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

"No," Auza sighed, shaking her hands of the excess magic that sparked around them. The black lightning quickly disappeared into the air, consumed by whatever world they had been transported to. "She's simply watching us." Auza glanced around, looking for tears in the world, but of course there were none. Not any she could see, anyway. She was always able to see through illusions, even before she knew she had magic. But this world was real, and that was disturbing.

"This is more than mere magic at work," Auza murmured, almost sure of herself. There had to be something more going on. No real magic could warp so many people to an entirely different world. But maybe, just maybe, she was wrong. Maybe magic really was capable of anything. "Henry, this is a bad time to be asking questions, but I need a reply. From Vincent. Ask him what he thinks of a magic that can transport four mortal bodies into an unknown world, without using illusions."

Auza moves to H-5

The magic ray that hit her barely even phased her. Her barrier rippled, but mostly just shrugged the attack off. Still, Auza determined that she should be careful. If a beast could drain her barrier of a little energy with magic, physical attacks would be incredibly difficult to ward off. But she had to get closer if she wanted to assist with damage output. Sitting back and shooting black lightning at the beast would not be very helpful.

"Damn that smarted," Klein cursed as his previous elevated enthusiasm was quickly diminished at the claws of the astral beast.  It definitely had the strength to cleave him in two with great ease, and he only hoped that he would survive long enough to see it fall.  If harm came to the others, he didn't know what he'd do.  He turned on his heel, trying to get over the loss of balance caused by the quake.  His sword rained down on the beast's hulking body, strike after strike, transitioning into piercing jabs that stung like snake bites.  Perhaps a little added touch would be just the thing to take this beast down.

Henry violently scribbled away on his parchment.  He didn't realize how far behind he was.  He wasn't prepared at all for this situation.  Auza confirmed what he knew to be fact.  Though her weird magic zone had dissipated, he could still feel her oppressive presence lurking over them like a sword waiting to drop.  He felt his mind clear and peace swell throughout his body.  This was a much better condition to be in.  He gave an affirming nod to Auza's request.  You heard her question.  What do you think about all of this?

She must be pretty desperate to get an opinion of me.  Glad to know she acknowledges my intensive study of magic, however.  He paused a moment to drink it in and Henry rolled his eyes.  Auza could only imagine what Vincent might be saying.  It's rather simple.  It is possible.  It's just that the entity who utilized the magic has control over mana equivalent to that of a deity, maybe even more so.  Transportation of four beings through space to a different dimension or world is something only Meteoro, God of Space, could accomplish.  It is hard enough for one to transport themselves into a different realm without aid.  So that makes this a frightening display over mana control, not to mention the amount of mana needed is immense.

Henry listened intently and relayed the information to Auza, stepping closer towards her.  "What he says seems to make sense.  No ordinary person could do this..."

Henry moves to H4.

All right, time to shine.  Macha was completely unfazed by the quake.  She blurred out of existence and landed upon the beast's back, a sinister grin on her face as she hacked away at the exposed muscle.  Three powerful and precise slices was all she needed as she vaulted off of its back, spinning in midair landing a violent twirling slice to its face which was sure to get it riled up.  She dealt a simple frontal slash upon landing on the ground and she was gone once again, phantom copies of herself converging from all sides to land extra blows to the beast, her actual body reappearing where she had started.  She appeared to be quite satisfied with herself.  "Now then.  Your turn," she spoke calmly to the beast.  If that did not provoke its ire, she didn't know what would.  She spared a pleading glance to Henry; she was going to need his assistance for sure.

Macha waits.

"As I thought," Auza sighed again. That Vincent would agree with her was enough for her to know. This wasn't simply magic at work here. She took a few more steps, and now she was right by the beast. Almost immediately she began to channel her magic, some idea striking her as she began her casting. She lifted her hands up beside her, then swung them to her center, her hands converging and pointing with claws fingers at the beast that stood before them. Now that she was closer, it was rather large.

"Beast, magic you may be, but by magic you will fall!" Auza chanted, and as she spoke, a blood red chain shot up out of the ground beneath the beast, impaling through it's body and spirit, wrapping around the beast. The red of the chain glowed, as if on fire, though no heat rose from it. "All of you, if you have some form of magic damage, use it." Auza began to cast again, this time only snapping her fingers as her magic needles attempted to sow the beast's mouth shut, little good that would do.

Klein uses Winter's Brutality! [Permanent ATK +1]

The quake...was it stronger than before? Klein quickly recovered from it, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a vial with a blue essence within. The vial was cold to the touch, the glass slightly frosted. He had been meaning to down what was in it for quite a while. He wasn't sure what it did, but surely it would be a boon to the group's current endeavors. Taking out the cork, he chugged the liquid but quickly regretted it. "AAAAAGGGHHH!!" he screamed, clutching his head and falling to the ground, rolling over the dirt and stone in agony. His skin turned a light blue color, his body growing colder and colder until he slowed his roll, quite literally, and lay there on the ground shivering, his nose running as if he were sick. His teeth chattered noisily and he glanced at Macha as if asking for help, but no words could escape his mouth. He could do nothing but lie there and hope he was not squashed by the massive beast.

Klein waits...rather reluctantly.

Henry continued writing--a wonderful start of a journey..but this time it had a theme. He chronicled the start of his own journey. When he first met Klein and Auza and joined them to recover his book. The mere reminiscence gave him energy the likes of which he had never known, and he spread that forth, swirling light dancing out from his form, radiating to Auza and even to Macha. The light swirled about the beast, slashing at it and whipping it. Henry smiled and glanced over to Auza. "This should make things easier. It's about time we progressed. I think we have quite a bit to learn regarding our current displacement situation."

The light felt great against her skin and memories surged through her mind. Getting rescued by Klein, Henry, and Auza...that was the beginning. The memories got her so pumped up she almost felt like screaming like her apprentice normally did, but she refused to lose her composure, grinning even wider than she normally did instead. She sidestepped and lashed out expertly with her blade, a burning aura coating the length on the fourth blow to burn the beast away, shredding its brute force and strength of spirit. Again, she was gone after a quick slash, her phantom copies raiding the beast from all sides. She reappeared where she was standing before, glad that her attack had rattled the beast so badly, for surely it had more up its sleeve than some mere clawing and tremors.

"I believe we're about done here," the blademaster said rather cheerily.

"I'd say," Auza agreed. She raised her hands, cracking her fingers as she moved and readied them. There would be a lot of finger snapping involved with this magic, but perhaps she could take an easier route. Instead of snapping her fingers, she merely flicked them, one by one until all of the magic needles she could conjure was available to her. And, all at once, she sent them into the beast's already-sealed mouth. The pain the creature must be in...Auza had no time to care for that. She wanted out of this prison.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Henry let out a sigh of relief. Macha had come over to where he and Auza were and gave him a nice pat on the back which made him smile widely. The group seemed to look around, waiting for things to revert to normal. Any moment now the area would dissolve like it had before and they would be back near Sihir so they could tackle the demon's influence amongst the three settlements. Things would progress as normal. Any moment now. Henry's heartbeat quickened and his usually calm smile started to form a grimace of panic. They weren't going anywhere. Nothing was happening. Not even the appearance of the witch nor the sound of her voice taunting came to be. There was just nothing. Them...and the empty cavern.

Macha glanced up at the overcast sky. "I believe we have a problem, Auza," the blademaster commented lightly to her magically adept compatriot. She dismissed her blade in a cloud of darkness; she sensed no further harm for the time being. "We have no idea where we are. A little exciting, I'd say. Frighteningly thrilling."

"Teacher, please..." Klein murmured from a short distance. He had not moved from his spot. He remained standing with his blades out, gazing at the gaping opening leading to the tunnel from which the Cosmolith had emerged. If the witch wasn't going to reappear now, and the world wasn't going to return to normal, there was really only one course of action left to take.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Auza shook her hand, a slight reaction to the massive amount of magic she had used in that moment. Just a few weeks ago, she could not have imagined coming into such power. This journey across the continent made her much stronger, her magic was far more potent now than ever. That worried her. So much power for one being was difficult to control, and dangerous for those around her. This she knew. Eternia's upkeep was a completely different issue from that, and she would never allow that place to touch the mortal realm.

"If I had to make a guess," Auza began, glancing around before settling her eyes on the cave where the beast had rumbled through. "In order for us to go back to our world, we would have to follow along with this thrice-damned witch's agenda. As much as I hate the idea of playing her game, there is nothing else we can do but move forward." Or, perhaps Wallace would find them by some strange circumstance. He had the power to traverse worlds, though his was a very different power. He may have never been to this world, making his power basically useless to them here.

"Let's not waste time," Auza said, stepping forward towards the cave.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

"Agreed, let us make haste, shall we?" Macha gave her apprentice a reassuringly look and ushered the two boys out like little lambs, trailing after Auza into the darkness of the cave. There were no lights. No torches. No glimmering, mana-infused gems. Just darkness. Treading along carefully, the group made their way forward. In the far distance after quite a few minutes of traveling, they could see two stands with torches blazing on each side of a large opening which would undoubtedly mark their exit. Picking up the pace now that there was a clear destination and the path was a straight shot, the group proceeded out into the open air. Behind them stood the crag of the cave and the ring which were both above-ground. In the opposite direction was a long path marked by wooden boards under massive crimson archways leading to what looked like some sort of town surrounded by a cement wall, paper lanterns hanging off the edges. The sky over the crags was overcast but in the distance, a blood red sun could be seen in the sky, setting below the horizon in the distance, yet no night seemed to be ensuing. The sky remained a bluish gray despite the sun being so red.

"What? How...how in the world did you...?" a voice sounded from somewhere off to the side. An older man maybe in his mid-30s stepped into view, stroking a short, pointy black beard in contemplation. His face was rugged and he had a scar on his left cheek. He scrutinized the party with his dark red eyes, one of which was starting to grow cloudy as if he was losing is vision. He was tall and slightly bulky. He had a huge solid steel trident on his back that would surely take considerable strength to wield effectively. These people...they didn't seem right. "Where is the Cosmolith?" he shot at them, irritation ringing in his rough, deep voice. His muscles seemed to tense up.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Post by Zerifachias Wed Jan 07, 2015 6:12 pm

Auza was not a fan of feeling about aimlessly in the dark, so she was somewhat glad when they came across the village. And of course they were approached by someone from that village, that's how it always was with abnormal, secluded places like this one so obviously was. Not even a greeting, either, just a bunch of demands and irritation. Auza clicked her tongue and scowled at the old man. "Another blundering idiot trying to waste my time. I've had just about enough of you people," she grumbled.

Auza shot her glare at the old man, not fearing his much larger body or his trident. "I have no idea what this 'Cosmolith' is, but judging from your reaction, it must have been that creature that attacked us. Its dead. As dead as I can make it, anyway." Auza glanced around the old man, as if he were no longer her issue. The village did not seem very large at first glance, though she could hardly see in this darkness, despite the lanterns. "If you're going to let us pass, then I suggest doing it quickly. I'm very tired and I do not feel like affecting the creatures of this realm any more than I have to."

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Post by Masquerade Wed Jan 07, 2015 6:58 pm

Did this little girl call him a blundering idiot? Taken quite aback, the man had to regather his thoughts. She went on about being tired and something about this realm? What did she even...wait DEAD? The Cosmolith was dead?! "There's no way you could have killed the Cosmolith!" the man shouted in shock, a bunch of spittle flying out of his mouth at the party. "That thing is unstoppable!" he continued to protest. He seemed pretty damn sure that the creature could not be done away with.

"Well, it was stopped, I assure you of that," Macha teased, a playful smile adorning her face at the bewildered older gentleman. "I mean, we slew a creature in there, presumably the only one as we did not run into any others on our exit. And, we exited alive. Do we look in bad condition? Auza here is right. We are rather tired. Might you stop your blabbering for one day and escort us to the village. You should be considering us heroes if that thing was bothering you." The blademaster tapped her foot impatiently. She knew both Henry and Klein would need rest as well as Auza. Macha herself was actually quite fine, but there was no need to speak as such.

Well, whoever these people were, they were quite rude. "Hmph, true enough. The Cosmolith has been around since presumably the dawn of time and there hasn't been a day when it hasn't hassled us in some way, shape, or form. We finally managed to isolate it at the crag with His Highness's powerful magic, but that was all that we could have managed, and that was barely a solution at all. The king cannot have expected to spend the rest of his life expending mana like that--it was apt to kill him. You've done us a great justice..." the man explained, reluctantly tacking on the last part. "My name's Fiyane Zhi. Friends call me Yan. The village over in the distance is the royal capital of the Wastes, Moraka'el, seeing as how it seems you are foreigners here." He gave the party a good once over. Definitely not from around here. "Follow me."

With some progress made on the rugged man, the group followed him up the path beneath the archways leading to the thick wooden gate sandwiched between two of the cement walls surrounding the city. The wall was a lot higher than Klein thought, and he marveled at the guards standing atop it. Yan gave a signal to them and the wooden gate began to rise with the loud sound of churning machinery. It revealed a marvelous paved avenue with beautiful houses and business fronts on each side, side streets branching off leading to more residences and the like. Yan waved them along, through the gate and over to the sidewalk. The roads were busy with a mix of crudely made automobiles and horses. Many more people opted to walk and take the sidewalks making them quite congested. Yan made sure to keep the group together. They came to a stop at a busy intersection that took the form of a square plaza with an eloquent fountain in the center that shot crystal clear water into the air, the statue itself being of several exotic fish leaping out of stone crafted to look like water itself. Shimmering at the bottom of the fountain rested plenty of gold and copper coins. Several people were sitting on the fountain's edge talking to each other and making merry.

The strange vehicles came to a stop and Yan ushered the group across the street. Luckily, there was a tall building on the opposite side that looked like a hotel of sorts. It had a large red sign above a wooden door entrance that had strange writing on it. It must have been a foreign language. Yan slid open the door and the smell of cherry blossoms rolled out onto the street. The group entered and Yan closed the door behind him. "Just wait here," he said tersely before approaching the front desk. There was another small jade fountain in the lobby with more coins littering the bottom. Several bamboo plants stood about, accentuating the wooden surfaces like the tables and stands, while couches and chairs with comfortable-looking crimson upholstery were organized expertly making the place look professional, quaint, and homely. Yan was quick to make it back to them.

"Well, for heroes, it was easy to get you rooms for free," Yan said with a smug grin. He handed them all small copper keys. "You all have a four bed suite on the top floor. A partition is available to separate men and women if necessary. Public bath springs are on the ground floor down the left hallway," he explained and pointed in the direction he indicated. "Stairs leading to the top floor are at the end of the ground floor rooms hallway to the right." Again, he pointed. "Men's bath is on the left side of the hall. Women's on the right. There will be signs with both script and symbols. It shouldn't be too hard. Ask reception if you need anything. I must inform His Highness of what's transpired. Chances are I will return tomorrow to fetch you; he will most certainly like an audience with the heroes when they are fresh and well-rested. Until then." He bowed his head slightly and gave the group a wave, leaving them alone in a strange hotel of a strange city in a strange realm.

"Did you hear that? Public bath springs. Doesn't that sound lovely? I know I could go for a wash," Macha stated in a lively manner as if they were on vacation or such. She could here her apprentice groan and took immense pleasure in it.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Auza did not like the crowded streets, but she was much more intrigued by the mobile carriages that roamed the streets without a horse leading them. She had never before seen one of it's likeness. It was strange, to say the least. Auza had hoped that the village would be small, to scale with a hopefully small realm, but it appeared that they were, in fact, on a completely different world. Or perhaps it was another time period? Auza could not guess. Anything was possible when it came to magic, given enough power. But from what the old man said, they've had trouble with that beast for centuries. Meaning the magic in this world was much, much weaker than in theirs.

Even the buildings seemed different. The inn was certainly strange. Auza was barely listening, though when Macha spoke, her attention was gathered once more. A bath, was it? Auza dusted some dirt out of her long braid. Her hair was getting longer again, she would have to reset her braid already. To Klein and Henry, Auza glanced and spoke, "Be careful here. Remember that we are outsiders in this world, we do not want to influence it more than is necessary. What we need is information. About this world, the magic, and the beast that we killed. Do nothing until we have that information."

Auza glanced over to Macha and let out a light sigh. "But I am tired. A bath sounds lovely to me."

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

"But of course, Miss Auza. I would actually like to see the city for myself. Never before have I been to such a place, and never again once we leave may I get to again," Henry said with a childlike smile upon his face. The writer wanted to take in all the sights and sounds and make notes regarding this place such that maybe he could write about it one day. Besides, they could always interrogate the civilians regarding the nature of this place. It would be beneficial for all parties that way. "What do you say, Mister Klein? How about a quick romp about town before heading to the baths ourselves? Surely you aren't too tired if I'm up and ready for it." He closed his eyes in glee and turned his attention to the older male.

Klein wasn't exactly feeling very peppy at the moment. A nice long nap would suit him just fine. But he couldn't let Henry know he lost his spryness. If the rascal wished to get into strange city shenanigans, then he would have to be sure to facilitate the opportunity. "Yeah, you know it! We've got a lot to learn about this place, even if we're only going to be here temporarily," he agreed with Henry's wishes. "I guess we'll see you gals around," he said quickly, taking Henry's arm and strolling out of the hotel.

"Oh dear, I do hope Henry can keep that Alaster in line," Macha said, shaking her head mockingly. In truth, she wasn't worried. Klein knew if he misbehaved that not only would he have to deal with his teacher, but he would have to deal with Auza as well. And that was something he would surely rather avoid. "Shall we head to the room to drop off our stuff first? Maybe they have a fruit basket or some toiletries. I typically pack light when traveling. I'm not below taking a little soap or two from inns," she jokingly admitted to Auza, poking her tongue out.

"As long as they don't get themselves killed before tomorrow, then I'll want nothing more," Auza replied dryly. She was not concerned, Klein was strong and Henry had a knack for not dying. She glanced at Macha and waited a moment before saying anything. "I don't suppose you would be carrying any toiletries. I could store them in a magic pocket, but never considered the necessity of it."

Auza gestured towards the stairs, "Lead on, then. I'm tired of being in the front of the pack for one day."

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

"I don't believe I have any of my own. I stay pretty mucked up while adventuring but boy am I overdue for a more fervent washing," Macha said with her cat-like grin. She moved forward and led Auza down the hall to the metal stairs that would carry them up to their room on what turned out to be the ninth floor. "I can appreciate that they'd want us to have a nice view but I think a lower-level floor would be more practical. Now I'm even more tired." A nearby maintenance crew member alerted the duo to the fact that the lift used by hotel staff, though technically strictly for hotel staff use, was open to public use until the hotel got a guest elevator installed. "Torcrea be praised," Macha let out a sigh of relief, thanking the staff member before continuing on to their room. It was pretty obvious which was theirs: it had a reserved doorknob hanger and a small thank you card from the hotel staff for dispelling the Cosmolith. Macha removed both and unlocked the door, opening it and stepping inside.

It was almost like stepping into their own apartment. There was a small foyer area which led into a living space with two beautiful beige couches and a single matching armchair. A fairly short coffee table rested in front of a polished blackened wood entertainment center littered with vases full of flowers, ivy, and dust-free trinkets. There was a bookcase against one wall with a few complimentary books and magazines on it. A small hall led to a dining area with a nice black wooden dining set that matched the entertainment center in the previous room. A basket full of lush fruit sat in the center with another thank you card propped up against it. Another hall leading out of the dining area led to a dead end, but on each side there was a room: one on the left, and one on the right. Each room possessed a nice dresser for storing clothes, a large ornate wooden chest with intricate designs carved in it for other storage, and two beds, fully made with a deep red bedspread and fluffed white pillows. Each bedroom had it's own bathroom with a spotless porcelain tub and a shower along with a nice tiled countertop with dual sinks. There was no doubt the rate for a room like this would be through the roof.

"Well, didn't we luck out?" Macha concluded firmly as their little tour of the "hotel room" ended in one of the bedrooms that she figured she'd claim for her and Auza while the boys could have the other room. She meandered into the bathroom and yelped in glee, reentering the bedroom with two fairly large bottles of complimentary body wash with cherry blossom fragrance. "There's shampoo in there too. You'll probably need a whole bottle for your hair, eh?"

* * *

Klein continued to drag Henry for another couple of blocks before stopping. New to the city, where on earth were they to begin their search for information? "This was not a well-thought out plan," Klein said discontentedly. People were everywhere walking around. A few spared weird glances to the oddly dressed duo, granted Henry seemed to fit in more than Klein.

Henry smiled and gently tugged on a nearby gentleman's sleeve. The man stopped and was at first rather annoyed, but upon seeing Henry's face, his whole demeanor changed. "I'm sorry to bother you, sir, but we're not from around here. Does this city possess a library?" The man nodded and jotted down a little map on some spare paper in his pocket. It was surprisingly good for just a quick little sketch. Henry thanked the man for his time and allowed him to depart. The boy held the paper up to Klein's face. There was a little circled star for their destination. "We start here, Mr. Klein. I do believe you need to work on your people skills," he teased.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Post by Zerifachias Sun Jan 11, 2015 3:34 pm

Auza could not help herself. She was impressed. The inn here was nothing like the ones back home. She was not use to such luxury, not anymore. She came from a rich family, so comfort was not alien to her, but she had grown so used to the road over the years that not having a campfire almost bothered her. Almost. Auza could appreciate a proper living space. The place that the innkeepers gave them was large enough to house two families, but it would just be for the four of them. That made it almost worth the trouble.

"At this point, I just may use the bath instead," Auza sighed. The closest she would ever come to making a joke. It was more of a tired statement than a joke, she was still going to the hot springs regardless of how tired she was. She saw Macha disappear into the bath and raised her eyebrow. "No, actually. There are ways to use less soap than what may seem necessary, plus magic, but I'm not using magic here. Half a bottle will do." Auza retrieved the bottle in question and gave her affirmation to Macha. She was ready to go.

"I dislike how these people are treating us like heroes though," Auza sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose. "We killed a magic that has been active since the dawn of this world, or so it seems. But I suppose this is a worry for another time. Let's go back down." Auza knew Macha would not want to dwell on such things. Auza did not want to either, but she had to. As a witch, she had a responsibility to make sure her actions never upset the balance of her world.

Tales of Alidaire: The Chase - Page 27 Empty Re: Tales of Alidaire: The Chase

Post by Masquerade Mon Jan 12, 2015 1:36 am

"It does seem a bit excessive, doesn't it?" Macha pondered as she strode out of the room with Auza and headed to the lift. She could tell that her ally wished not to worry her about things but it was actually a valid point. How much of an impact had they already had in this world? What would happen if someone discovered that they were from another world? "It goes without saying that we will have to watch our backs while we're here. Sleep with one eye open, so to say," she concluded, not that she wasn't always on guard anyway. She knew Auza was likely the same way. She liked how alike they were, and yet they both had their differences. The duo entered the lift and Macha pressed the button that would take them to the first floor. It was a surprisingly quick drop that took Macha by surprise, almost causing her to stumble. Almost. The lift landed with a soft thud, it's descent slowing dramatically as it approached the desired floor. The gate blocking the entrance slid open and they were allowed to depart, heading back to the lobby and down the hall to the public baths. Macha slid the door open to reveal a large open area with a floor of natural stone. A blast of steam hit her face and Macha felt she was in heaven. There was a huge rectangular hole carved in the stone filled with piping hot water, running water in fact. It seemed as though it were being cycled, most likely to keep it clean. There were wooden racks and shelves lining the walls where belongings could be stored and there were clean towels and washcloths on the racks. A few hampers could be seen around the place for storing dirty towels and the like. It seemed at this time there was no one else in the bath and Macha hoped it would stay that way.

"Oh I'm going to enjoy this!" Macha squealed in delight as she loosened her garments and let them fall to the floor, not before closing the door behind her and Auza, of course. She picked up her clothes and stashed them in a little shelf to the side before approaching the water with great haste, taking in a deep breath before diving in with no hesitation. She breached the surface and gasped in delight. The water was the perfect temperature--she felt the grime of the road easily melt off her skin. She realized that in her desperation to get in the bath, she had forgotten to nab a washcloth. She also left her body wash behind but she figured she'd just take some from Auza's bottle. "Could you be a dear and bring old Macha a washcloth when you come to get in, Auza?" she pleaded, the widest smile she could muster on her face. She felt so relaxed and silly. She floated on her back in the water, unafraid since there would be no prying eyes gazing upon her elegant form.

* * *

The library wasn't too far from the spot they had been before, but Klein was still a bit tired from all the traveling they had been doing previously so that the trip seemed to take an eternity. Henry wasted no time in opening the doors, this time it being his turn to drag Klein along by the arm. The two approached the front desk where an older fellow with a balding head and silver framed spectacles stood, waiting to assist visitors.

"Ah, what can I help you with today, lads?" the old librarian croaked, his voice seeming to be almost as wrinkled as his weathered visage.

"We're going to need to procure a few books. One on world geography, one on world history, one on Moraka'el history in particular, and one on world cultures." Henry was quick to list what he thought they would need and the man raised an eyebrow. "We're doing an extensive school project. I want to make sure we get our facts straight. Going above and beyond will grant us a great grade, and that's what we're aiming for." He gave the librarian a sincere smile.

"Quite the young scholar," the librarian replied, taking out a handkerchief and letting out a wet cough into it. He hacked a few more times before continuing. "It's so nice to see the young people working so hard when it comes to their education. I wish there were more students like yourselves." The man seemed genuinely pleased with the two fellows and made off to fetch the books, shuffling along and humming a merry tune.

"So, I didn't know you were capable of duping an old man, Henry," Klein shot at the younger boy with a sly smirk. "To think you'd stoop that low."

"What was that, Mister Klein? I couldn't hear you over the sound of my triumph in attaining the tomes we will require to garner the information we so desperately need," Henry chimed cheerily causing Klein to shrink back with a slight blush. "Again, Mister Klein. They are called people skills. Perhaps we should check out a book about those?"
