As the monster's remains began to sink below the water, Stew and Klein quickly dashed back to the deck in time to see the bridges of cartilage slide off the ship and into the waters below. The next few minutes were filled with the sound of the bubbling and slightly churning waters. Then silence. Stew took a deep breath. "I can't believe we survived that," he spoke solemnly.

Klein was completley expressionless...for a moment, that is, before he jumped into the air and did a backflip. "That was AMAZING!! We knocked the hell outta that thing!! Wooo!!" he exclaimed suddenly. He sheathed his sword and punched the air in triumph.

Stew watched as the girl fell asleep and smiled. "Keep it down, ya fool. Let the girl have her rest, eh?" With that, Stew departed to check on things below deck. He was already muttering a few curses because of the damage to the ship.

Klein looked to the side shamefully. Though he was excited for the victory, he didn't want to wake Auza. Silently, he walked to the damaged side of the ship and looked out over the sea, now glistening in the evening sun. In the distance, he could make out a landmass that was most certainly to be Berbatu. They would be there by nightfall. He thought of all the things he'd encounter there...and smiled.


The silver beams of moonlight shrouded the deck in a ghostly glow. The vessel was no longer moving, though still gently rocking in the water. It became apparent that it had reached the dock. The wooden docks were vacant except for the S.S. Horizon and were adjacent to a small settlement with several stone buildings with makeshift, straw roofs. There were a few lampposts about, a candle burning in each to lighten the area, for business was still being conducted in the cool night air.

It was Titik Masuk, the only port that accepts ships from foreign nations. And it was located on Berbatu. They had made it.

Klein stood on the wooden dock waiting for Auza to awaken. Hope she wakes up before dawn, he thought. Otherwise, she's headed back for Dalmaschior. I'm surprised at how quickly the repairs to the ship are being made. He pondered shipbuilding and repairing as he waited.

Klein was aroused from his thoughts as he noticed Auza walking past him. He followed. "So, you're awake? I don't blame you for falling asleep like that; we've had quite an exciting day, right?" he spoke cheerily. "So what are you up to now? Maybe we could do some shopping or something? I noticed we don't really have that many items." He frowned slightly remembering the couple of herbs and few other things in the inventory. "What do you say? It could give us time to bond." He grinned at her, the moonlight casting brooding shadows on his face despite the obvious happiness of his being.

Klein took a few steps back and let Auza go. A bead of sweat formed on his forehead. "Note to self: Don't mention the word 'bond' to a Bind Witch," he muttered uneasily to himself. "Oh well. There'll be time to get to know each other later. I'll just scope some cool stuff out myself!" With that, he dashed into town to shop.

As Auza made her purchase, an elegant female walked up to her. She had long, pink hair tied into two ponytails that seemed to stream along in the breeze as she walked. The dim light of the lampposts illuminated her subtle red eyes along with the soft features of her face, an elegant nose and a mouth with gentle lips curled downwards in a solemn grimace. A long rapier was at her side. Her clothes appeared rather expensive; they were white with a strange design on the back. However, the most noticeable of her features was a black dragon tattoo on her left forearm.

She approached quickly and when she arrived at the item shop, she gazed over the items. "I've always enjoyed this little town, you know?" she said aloud. Her voice was surprisingly soft for the expression that plagued her face. "The people are always so kind. You look new." She was clearly addressing Auza now. "Are you an immigrant?"

Here, the girl's grimace switched to a slight smirk of interest. "You may call me Rose," she answered modestly. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. You must have been one of the folks from the S.S. Horizons which was attacked by the Shocktopus. How did you escape from the monster?"

A strange glint flickered across her eyes, but quickly vanished. "Wow. You and your friends must be very powerful to banish such a legendary creature," she commented. She appeared to ponder something for a moment. "Perhaps you could be of some help. Recently, the activity of thieves has increased in the area, and a poor fellow has come to me for help. His name is Henry and it seems some thieves have stolen a book that is very precious to him. I'm planning on doing something about it tomorrow. How about lending a hand? There's a good amount of Gold for the deed." She awaited patiently for the girl's answer.

As if on perfect cue, Klein burst into the shop. "There you are, Auza!" he exclaimed happily as he strolled up. Then, he saw Rose. "Oh! So you already know that we're gonna help get some guy's book back? Sweet! This is gonna be so awesome! We get to help someone AND get Gold?!" His excitement could not be expressed with mere words anymore, so he did a couple of backflips instead.

Rose raised an eyebrow, but otherwise remained unfazed. "I forgot to mention that I already had the pleasure of meeting your rather eccentric friend. He was...easy to convince," she said carefully, trying to pick out the right words. She remembered walking up to him and not even mentioning the full story before he agreed to help. She desperately wanted to express her uneasiness about the fellow, but she shrugged it off.

"Well, you both know and it seems as though you both wish to help," she finally said. "Get some rest at the inn tonight and meet me at the town exit tomorrow. I know the thieves have a hideout somewhere around the river, Tali Sungai. I thank you both for your assistance." She bowed her head gratefully.

At that point, Rose seemed to have remembered something. "I'm sorry you two, but I must depart for now," she apologized as she made her way to the door. "I will see you two tomorrow." She opened the door to the shop and promptly left.

With their next objective set, Auza and Klein made their way to the inn where, suprisingly, two rooms were already reserved for them courtesy of Rose.


The next day, the pair woke bright and early and found Rose waiting for them by the town exit just as she said she would. Seeing them, she smiled. "Well, I'm glad you two made it so early. We'll have plenty of daylight on our side. Thieves are much more dangerous in darkness, in case you haven't run into the likes of them before." She paused here, and pulled out a scroll of parchment. "Since you two are going to be traveling soon, I figured this map of Berbatu would come in handy."

A shuffling sound came from nearby. "Well, well, well. I think our boss would like a nice prize like that map for his plannin' and whatnot," a raspy voice spoke. From out of the shadows stepped a man in a horrid vest and raggedy pants. He held a dagger with a serrated edge in one hand and he looked at the trio demandingly. Taking a look around, the party noticed three other similar men. "We'll be taking that map now, ya here?"

Rose drew her long rapier. The handle was carved into what appeared to be several roses while the blade was tinted light pink. "Stand strong, you two. We need not fear these scumbags!" she exclaimed boldly. It was obvious that the party would have to defend themselves.

Klein was amazed by Rose's grace and her weapon was awesome. It made him ashamed when he drew his own pathetic sword. Regardless, he'd prove that his skills were awesome despite his shoddy weapon. "Don't worry, Rose; we've got your back," he called out to her enthusiastically.

Rose's gaze grew fierce and the look in her eyes sent shivers down Jase's spine. He knew he was as good as dead. "Would you care to give me that item back, or shall I kill you to gain what I wish? Too late," she said simply and ran him through with her rapier, but only to have a stream of sand surge upwards from the ground, spiraling around the thief and slashing him three times. Rose pulled out her rapier and watched the fool crumple to the ground.
