Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
"I just don't get why the heck it isn't even moving." Hannah grumbled. She pulled out her wand again and poked the wrapper a few times. Saying nothing, she merely just kept poking it. "I'm plenty full, I had a burger just before leaving home." Hannah glared at the wrapper now, brandishing her wand dangerously. "Now if it doesn't move so much as an inch, I'm going to throw this thing out the window!" Hannah pointed to the wrapper, showing the others what she was talking about.
"Give it your best shot Hannah!" Kelly said with a smile, "I know you can do it this time!"
Hannah grinned, pointing her wand at the wrapper one last time. "Flipendo!" she shouted. The wrapper twitched in response and fell off Kelly's hand. Hannah looked down at it, her face unreadable. Then, "It moved!" Hannah exclaimed, so overjoyed that she managed to fling her wand across the compartment. The wand was merely inches away from hitting Rosa in the face. "Oh...sorry about that Rosa, I guess I just got a little excited..." Hannah retrieved her wand, a guilty look upon her face.
"I wouldn't call that mastering the spell but..." Kelly paused, "I guess it's good enough for now. Good job Hannah."
"Thanks!"

"That's great, Hannah!" Rosa exclaimed, still smiling despite having a wand just thrown at her. In reality, however, she was utterly terrified.
Oh my god, that thing could have hit me in the face and hurt me. What if it had let out sparks? Then it would have burned my face. That isn't a pleasant thought. Nope, not at all. I got lucky this time but who knows what might happen next time. Note to self. First thing to learn is how to dodge.
"Oh, it's fine, it's not like it actually hit me or anything," she continued, acting nonchalant about it. She was surprised when her voice didn't even waver. But that was a good thing she supposed. "And even if it did, I've had worse so I can take it." Okay, now she was just bullshitting. Mouth, insert foot.

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
"Huh? You mean the Melofors Jinx?" I asked after Stella stormed off. Well, of course it had to be that one, it was the only one I did. I waited until I was certain she was gone, before answering Quinn. No need to give her prove that I did it. She probably though I did already. "It's a fairly simple one. I conjures a pumpkin to cover the target's head. At first I though it turned someone's head into a pumpkin, but I doesn't." I sighed. "In retrospect, the spell was too simple to do that, but, meh. It's still cool."
"Oh, And Quinn," I added as I remembered another thing about the jinx. "The pumpkin is not edible. It tastes absolutely revolting, so don't try eating it. Ever." I shuddered at the memory. It took hours for the taste to fade out.

"Melofors jinx..."
The words sounded so bitter-sweet in Quinn's mouth. His brothers had always said the spells were always... different, when it came to speech. He murmurred an okay to Jared as he warned him about eating the pumpkin. He never intended on it anyway.
He wanted to practice, to see just how long it would take him to perform the spell. But with only Jared and Gale to practice on, he'd rather not. He didn't know the undo spell, if there even was one. So this time he'd rather not take a risk. Plus Stella was out there with her pumpkin head, it would only take one correctly done spell to prove they had done something.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stella walked away in an angry fume. She had gotten the pumpkin off her head with the help of her older sister, Luna. She was furious, sitting in her compartment, all alone, shutting out her "best friends".
"I swear. I will make that filthy little half-blood turn into a pumpkin one day. Then he can see how it feels."
Her dark mutters were heard by no one for the rest of the train ride.

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
The train continued to barrel through the rest of the day, everyone inside lost in their conversations and games. There was a small outbreak of fighting with the fifth-year Griffindors and Slytherins, but otherwise the flight was void of trouble. Almost every first year, including Hannah, seemed to be getting more nervous by the second. The light outside diminished to almost nothing, and the train began to slow down.
The first years were to travel across the lake, while the older students were taken to school by carts that seemingly drove themselves. A rather large half-giant by the name of Hagrid was to escort these first years across the lake.
-
"Alrigh' you firs' years!" Hagrid boomed, "No more than four to a cart, and keep yer hands inside the boat at all times! There be plenty of unfriendly monsters in these waters." Hagrid's large bulk was extremely noticeable, Hannah noted, even though she was one of the runtiest kids there, and most everyone towered over her.
"Hannah!" Kelly's voice called back to her, "Rosa! I'll see you two in Ravenclaw, okay!?" Kelly was standing behind the group, not too far away, waving them good-bye for now.
"Bye Kelly!" Hannah called back, giggling at her friend's enthusiasm.
The ride over the lake was unimaginably smooth. The boat rocked ever so gently against the calm waters of the lake. Hagrid had a boat to himself, he was at least five times Hannah's size, if not more. Hannah kept her eyes closed for awhile, until she heard a great murmur of 'ooh's and 'aah's and 'wow's from the kids around her. Upon opening her eyes, her mouth dropped. Looming high over their heads was an enormous building, the windows alight with a golden glow. Hogwarts School wasn't a mansion or a simple house. It was a castle! A castle the likes of which Hannah had never seen.
The inside of the castle was just as spectacular as the outside. The first-years left Hagrid as they were led by a rather old looking, gruff witch. Her name was Professor Sprout, the Herbology teacher. She was the current Deputy Headmistress, who's job it was to guide the first-years into the castle and to the Sorting.
They stopped at a pair of large double doors, and Professor Sprout told them to wait there. After a few minutes, she came back and led them into the Great Hall. Many other students were already seated at their tables, the banner of their House hanging above their heads.
"First-years," Professor Sprout called out happily, catching everyone's attention, "When I call your name, you will come up, put on the hat, and have a seat here on this stool to be sorted." Professor Sprout then took out a rather long-looking parchment from her pocked at read the first name aloud, "Anette, Daniel"
A rather mousy-haired boy walked up to the stool, picked up the hat, sat down and promptly stuck the hat on his head. He seemed extremely confident in himself. For a while, nothing happened, but then the hat atop his head boomed in a mighty voice, "GRIFFINDOR!" An explosion of cheers echoed from one of the tables, Daniel took off the hat, placed it gently on the stool, and hurried over to the cheering table excitedly, talking to one of the older students almost immediately. Hannah supposed it was a relative.
"Cunning, Ashley!" Sprout called out another name. This time a frightened girl sat on the stool, her hands shaking violently.
The hat was barely on her head for five seconds before it boomed, "HUFFLEPUFF!" resulting in another explosion of cheers from another table. Ashley quickly made her way over to that table.
Sprout went through quite a few names before finally shouting, "Hart, Quinn!"

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
His heartbeat suddenly raced, his eyes widened, and sweat began to pur down his body. He was the first of his friends to be called. Oh how he hoped he would get sorted like the rest of his family. It took a moment for Quinn's legs to react. He took a very hot airy deep breath, followed by an airy dry swallow.
He had seated himself inbetween the middle and the front, which in retrospect wasn't a good ideas. His legs shook like they were about to give way, and sweat began to pour down even worse. A nagging feeling that he wouldn't make it to the hat kept crossing his mind. And he felt even worse when he finally did make it there.
He gulped one more time, still getting nothing but hot, dry air. Quinn sat, whispered something inaudible to all under his breath. He closed his eyes, took another deep deep breath and opened his eyes...
"I... I... I'm ready..."

"HA!" The old hat boomed in Quinn's ear, which probably caused him to jump in terror, "Another Hart boy, eh? My, my, aren't we different? Hm...you will do well in any House, I'm sure." The hat paused for a second before shouting, "SLYTHERIN!" causing an explosion of cheers from the Slytherin table and Quinn was whisked away towards his new House.
"Lawson, Jared!" Professor Sprout called out, a small smile upon her face.

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
I eagerly pushed through the group to head to the stool, with what I hoped was a confident strut to my step. I was all but panting to meet the fabled sorting hat. The magic it must have taken to give it its brains! To be able to see deep in the students mind a figure out what made them tick and assign them appropriately. The importance of the moment dawned on me as Professor Sprout placed the hat on my head. I was trusting a hat to make one of the most important decisions on my life? A hat would determine were I would life, sleep and eat for the next seven years? Was I mad?
I calmed my thoughts by reminding myself that Godric Griffindor himself charmed this hat, and the fact that it has been doing it's job for the upside of what? Four, five hundred years? But still... I didn't like snakes, nor did I want to figure out four or more riddles a day for the next seven years... It could hurt to make a suggestion...

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
"My, my, you're rather odd, aren't you?" The Sorting Hat said, interrupting Jared's thoughts, "Very well then, GRIFFINDOR!" The Griffindor table once again burst into applause and cheering, encouraging Jared to go join their ranks.
Professor Spout seemed very pleased that Hufflepuff was getting a lot of attention this year. The next four students were sent to her House, causing the Hufflepuff table to go driving mad with excitement. The streak was then ruined by a few more Slytherin first-years and a Ravenclaw. After the last Ravenclaw was called, which the Ravenclaw table had gone absolutely bonkers over, it was Hannah's turn.
"Rose, Hannah!" Professor Sprout called. Hannah walked calmly up to the seat and gently put the hat on her head.
Hannah looked indifferent on the outside, but on the inside, her heart was racing, pumping blood through her veins at 110 miles a minute, and her mind was a jumbled mess. The hat on her head grunted in her ear, causing her to jump slightly.
"You have quite the long memory. Plenty of compassion, I see. Very well," The hat boomed aloud the results of her Sorting, "RAVENCLAW!!" Hannah, her face as red as a cherry, took the hat off, placing it back onto the stool as she practically skipped over to the Ravenclaw table, where Kelly was waiting, cheering louder than any of the others. They hugged quickly, then both of them sat down, waiting for the rest of the first years.
"Ting Ting, Yan!"

At the sound of her name, Rosa nearly died.
"The horror," she choked out, bringing a shaking hand to her chest. She couldn't understand how people always seemed to be able to make her name sound so ugh even when they're saying it right. It was pretty damn freaky.
Weakly, Rosa dragged her feet to the stool and paused, hesitating. Looking up at the Professor holding the hat, she slowly took a seat before returning her attention to the Professor.
"Um, miss?" she began, voice sounding like a dying cat. "If, possible. Could you. . . maybe. . . . inform the others to just call me Rosa. . . .? It's my English name and I'm. . . . not too comfortable about non-family members using my Chinese name. . . . . It sounds. . . . uh. . . . how should I put this. . . . Butchered. . . ?"

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
Rosa hardly had enough time to talk before the hat began mumbling in her ear. "Let's see here. . . . . Definitely not a Gryffindor, I see. My, don't you have a lot of regrets. Maybe putting you in Gryffindor will help boost your confidence. No? Alright then. You are neither sly nor cunning making you unfit for Slytherin. All that's left now are Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, it seems. Well, you do have quite a curious mind but it seems you can't quite apply yourself. Not much of a hard-worker now, are you? How unfortunate. You won't be able to get through school unless you try. Well then, I suppose you'll go to...RAVENCLAW!" The Sorting Hat decided before Rosa even had a chance to reply to it, and even less time passed before the Ravenclaw table burst forth with a rousing cheer, Hannah even stood up in order to welcome Rosa.
Professor Sprout smiled, "Don't worrry, Rosa dear, I doubt anyone will remember your name from just this." With that said, Sprout continued to call up names.

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
Finally, the Sorting was completed, and everyone was rejoicing in the overwhelming results. By far, the Hufflepuff House had a large surplus of the first-years, and Professor Sprout was giddy with joy from it, by the look upon her face. Then, the Headmistress, Professor McGonagall, stood up from her gleaming, golden chair to address the student body.
"Welcome to Hogwarts, new students," She spoke formally, looking upon the new recruits, "And to the older students, welcome back. If I may, I have a few announcements to make. First and foremost, Mr. Filch has reminded me to tell you that all students are forbidden to enter the forest at the end of the grounds. Doing so will result in a detention, but I think that a rather lenient price to pay compared to what the forest has to offer." Professor McGonagall looked rather serious. "Also, I would like to welcome our new Defense Against the Dart Arts teacher, Professor G. Bloune." McGonagall motioned her right hand over to a rather sickly-looking man, who did nothing to present himself to the students. Rather, he just stared at them expressionlessly. "Also, I would like to say that any bullying going on around this school will not be tolerated. Wand and magic use outside of the classrooms are, strictly, forbidden. I do not wish to cause you all to starve, so enjoy the feast." With that McGonagall sat down, and the golden platters upon the tables filled themselves with mountains upon mountains of mouth-watering food and drink.

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
Upon seeing all the food, Rosa made a face. She had never seen so much to eat in her life and just looking at the edibles made her feel a little queasy. She swallowed, unconsciously leaning away from the food. There was no way all the students could eat all this. There was going to be so many left-overs when the feast was over.
She just hoped they wouldn't eat like this all the time.
"So, uh. What do you think of the food here?" Rosa decided to ask, distracting herself from the food. She turned to look at Kelly and Hannah, though the question was mostly directed at Hannah. Kelly had already been here a year so she was probably used to it. "A little much, isn't it?"

Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
"Magic!" I grinned with appreciation. I grabbed my fork and my knife and piled food unto my plate. Chicken, beef, mince pies, potatoes, the whole works. Even better, the food tasted as good as it looked. Hogwarts had some great chefs. My mouth full, I took the time scan my table and the other four. But Rosa and Quinn were sorted to other houses. Their goes my only friends so far. In fact, Gryffindor was a bit lacking in the first-year department. At least that meant smaller classes for me.
Re: Harry Potter Without Harry Potter (Role Playing Thread)
"I've never seen so much food in my life!" Hannah exclaimed, "And I live with 8 other people back home!" She looked excited, and a little relieved, that there was a place that had to prepare more food than her own household.
"8 other people in your house?" Kelly looked astonished, "How do you deal with that?"
"It's rough, but I'm the youngest, so my older siblings treat me better. I have five brothers and a sister. My mom and dad are both lawyers, so we can survive fairly well." Hannah shrugged, poking at one of the stuffed turkeys on the table with her knife.
"What's a lawyer?" Kelly had put down her own knife and fork and had a mildly interested look on her face. Hannah explained as much as she could about lawyers, but she hardly knew anything either, so she could only give Kelly her perspective. Hannah hardly noticed Rosa trying to talk to her, she was too busy attempting to get off the subject of lawyers with Kelly.
"So what are the classes like?" Hannah was saying quickly.
"The classes themselves are easy, and the homework is too, but there's a LOT of it, so you have to do it as soon as you get it." Kelly explained roughly.
"Awesome! I was a pro at getting everything done in elementary school, so this won't be a problem!"
"Elementary school?"
"Er...Muggle-school for children."
"I see..."

He could die. He was a Slytherin. A Slytherin. He was a curse, an omen, a jinx. Quinn Hart, the last remaining Hart child, had been sorted into Slytherin. Why hadn't he asked the hat to put him into Gryffindor?
The mountain of food was nothing compared to the endless pile of guilt and shame that had fallen on him. He didn't dare look up at the people around him. Especially not when he heard Stella laughing and enjoying herself not too far from him.
this was truly a horrible day. He knew the minute he began to tell his story things would just look down. A tear slipped down his cheek, he really wished he could have been in Gryffindor.

Rosa mentally sighed. She was starting to feel tired. Rosa glanced at her food. She wasn't feeling very hungry. In fact, she felt like laying her head down and falling asleep. Silently, Rosa hoped the feast would end soon. Since she didn't know where her House Common Room was, she couldn't look for it on her own. Not to mention, getting up and walking off would attract attention.
Rosa frowned. She would probably get into trouble too. Poking her meal, she wished her brother was here. He was only a few years older than her but because of the whole Dark Lord thing, he ended up being home schooled by her parents. She hadn't been allowed in any of the stuff due to her accidental tendencies.
A scowl appeared on her face as she glared, spearing through her meal. It wasn't as if she did it on purpose. It just happened.
