Pursuit of Happiness

Even in times of great sorrow, do you truly know what it is like to have nothing?
I think we all delude ourselves, create the illusion that we have nothing. We force ourselves to believe were down on our luck, without hope, having nothing to live for anymore. But we do not know what it is like to have nothing left in our lives but ourselves. We always have some sort of hope, some faint chance that things will get better; Even if we do not fully realize it just yet. None of us know what it is like to be without a chance.
After all, we all have three basic rights, no matter who we are. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. So simplistic. We overlook them many times, out of habit. A second nature we are all accustomed to. So now I ask you: What if you lost one of them?
Would you notice?
You do not have to be dead to not have life. It is not always obvious that you're being oppressed. Just because you believe you are happy does not mean your following your heart. I do not think we would notice immediately. We are slow when it comes down to it. Most of us would not know if it was right there in plain sight; We are all too ignorant for our own good.
I guess ignorance really is bliss.
We do not notice in anyone else. That is another thing. We are all so preoccupied with our own lives, our own stories, that we do not bother to look at anyone else. There is not a thing called compassion anymore; No... I do not believe so. Compassion... empathy... sympathy... humanity... all of these traits are dead and gone. Lost to those who came before us, likely forever gone to those who come after us.
I have written my story to disprove such matters. You may not know what it is like to have nothing to call your own, you may not notice when you have lost what is rightfully yours, you may not know the feelings we all should be feeling. But I do. And that is why I wrote my story.
I have to share what I know with you.

Prologue: A Place to Call Home
Endless Journey
It was cold.
The days had always been cruel, not like the nights but cruel nonetheless. That day however, it seemed that the world wanted her to quit. A terrible blizzard had been foreseen, she had gone up into the mountains anyway. Others said she was stupid for not heeding the seer's words, but she knew she wasn't. In her mind, she had to make this journey. She had to make it to Namara today.
She had a purpose.
It was of utmost importance that she got there before anyone else; Going in the blizzard was one of the ways to go about this. Namara was expanding. More stable land found among the freezing cliffs. It wasn't the most comfortable place for one to live, but for her it would be fine. She had no place else to go; She had no home.
It was in sight.
The faintest outlines of the small town were in sight. Her heart raced just a little bit faster. She had almost made it; She would have a home! She began to pick up speed, the dirty cloth wrapped around her to keep her warm billowing backwards even more. She didn't care if she started to freeze. She was almost there now, she almost was home!
She finally made it.
Frozen stiff, and practically burning from the warmth of the fire, she sat in the inn. The innkeeper brought the papers over to her, there was no one else in charge. Her shaking hand took the pen from him and she began to sign her name.
Chaos.
A loud bang on the door caused her to drop the pen. The innkeeper answered the door, she stood. She could wait to sign the papers until he came back, though she knew she shouldn't.
"By the order of his majesty, ruler of Glaythien, William di Rosa Grove. Namara village is now under Glaythien rule. Any land that isn't already claimed by a citizen of Namara village will be used for our industrial plants. Please hand over the charters immediately."
The innkeeper looked over at the girl for but a moment, sighed and went over to her. She grabbed the paper before he was in arms reach. She had made it here this time, she wasn't going to lose everything now. However, it seemed the soldiers who had arrived had other ideas.
"Under my orders, you must relinquish that document miss."
She didn't budge.
"..."
The guard sighed, and then moved over to her, she took a step back. He came closer yet again and she took another step back. But she couldn't keep this up, she couldn't move backwards forever. He soon had her cornered, he asked again.
"Miss, would you please hand that document over?"
She shook her head; he grabbed a hold of her.
"I've tried to be fair, I'm sorry it had to come to this. Under order of the king, I am to take any who resist prisoner. You, milady, shall be coming with me."
Before the innkeeper could say anything in response, the soldier began to drag her away. Her cloth from earlier discarded, she was left to face the elements alone in what little she had on. The soldier didn't care.
None too far off though, another soul, very much like the girl sat. It was his decision if he wanted to help her or not.

Zhaoyang nudged closer to the warm wall of the inn, absently staring up at the sky, a sky he couldn't see for the raging blizzard obscuring his vision. His whiskers drooped a little, as if they were unhappy too, and the tiger sighed. He'd seen the soldiers come up the road. He'd hoped they wouldn't take notice of him, blending as he did with snow, and thankfully they hadn't. He didn't feel like fending off hungry or bored soldiers today.
But even as he laid his heavy head on his paws, he heard a commotion from within the establishment. Zhaoyang's ears perked as a soldier came out dragging a girl with him, she appeared to be struggling to no avail. The poor girl had hardly any clothes for this weather, and looked like skin and bones. His eyes narrowed as he realized the injustice occurring before him.
The white tiger stood tall, a full five feet at his shoulders, and gracefully trotted in the soldier's path. He stared him down, blue eyes piercing and letting the man know he was looking right at him. All of a sudden he roared, mouth wide and fangs bared, loud enough for the town to hear.
Still growling, "I demand you release her," he commanded. "Or face the consequences." His tail flicked side to side and his ears laid back, clear that he was ready for a fight.

The man was about to let go of the struggling girl, but another two soldiers came up next to him. They reaffirmed his grip, glaring at the strange tiger who demanded the prisoner's release. How dare it try to go against the orders of the king?
"Remember our orders. Any resistee shall be jailed."
At this the two that had joined the first both drew swords. It appeared a fight was in order.

The tiger scowled as a couple other soldiers joined the offending one. Taking in their swords and armor, he almost smiled. These would not have the spirit to oppose his power. He almost pitied them. "You think to jail me? Ha!" Zhao took his stance, readying his powers for a battle.

Zhaoyang casts Alignment [-10 MP] on himself! Zhaoyang's Int and Evasion are increased by 20%!
Watching the soldiers ready themselves as well, Zhaoyang decided to play it patiently. He tilted his furry head to the sky, willing his weak connection to the stars to aid him. Miraculously, the clouds parted enough for him to see a few line up above him. He smiled serenely as he felt his body and mind empowered a little, then lowered his gaze back to his current adversaries, chilling breeze ruffling his thick fur. "I'm waiting."
Watching the soldiers ready themselves as well, Zhaoyang decided to play it patiently. He tilted his furry head to the sky, willing his weak connection to the stars to aid him. "Your time is up!" Zhaoyang swiped the air, sending the same burst of energy at the singed soldier, taking him down for good.

Zhao cursed silently glancing between the girl and the other, attacking soldier. He'd have to do some fancy footwork if he was going to stay alive long enough to free this girl he didn't know. He started towards the one with his sword drawn, before looking back at the girl--and noticing the staff at her back. His eyes widened slightly. He'd be better off with a second combatant on his side, hell they both would.
The tiger dashed in the offending soldier and the girl's direction, snarling as he caused a white flash of energy to hit the man.

As the man fell, the girl dropped her weapon, suddenly unable to keep her fingers woven around it. She began to shake, and her already pale skin seemed to begin to turn blue. A sharp wind made it no better for the poor girl. However she wouldn't let herself freeze. In seconds she was attached to the large tiger who had protected her, nuzzling against his fur. He was warm, that's all she cared about.

Zhao barely felt the girl make an impact with his chest she was so small to him. He stared curiously until he remembered she was freezing in this blizzard. He must've felt like a furry furnace to her. However the white tiger wished to let her rest, no doubt other soldiers were coming to investigate the raucous. Zhaoyang gently stepped a large paw around the girl, closer to his warmth for her sake at the moment.
"I'm afraid we can't stay here, little one. You and I have caused quite a commotion." Already he could see a couple curious villagers peek their heads out to investigate the aftermath. "If we move before the storm lets up, they won't be able to track us."
