Tales of Alidaire: Armageddon

Instead of dissipating into the shadows as he normally did, Cerberus sadly went over to Alyssia and nudged her unconscious body with one of his noses, whimpering when she didn't respond. He knew it couldn't be over. He would be sent back to Hell if Alyssia ever lost herself. The beast's thoughts were pierced by the sound of grumbling. It was Alyssia. Reaching down, Cerberus licked at her face gently, watching her face contort from an emotionless frown to an angry grimace. Cerberus barked a few times before he noticed that Alyssia had opened her eyes.

"No rest for the wicked?" she said rather light-heartedly despite her expression. Alyssia laugh and clambered up, her body surprisingly refreshed. She could feel a power surging within her. Had that always been there...? No, she thought, placing a hand over the place where her heart would be. "At least it wasn't a complete waste...," she muttered inaudibly to herself before turning to the others. "How is everyone else?"

Lightning was back on her feet momentarily after the battle, also feeling rather refreshed. Whatever killing that monstrosity had done to her, it made her feel... stronger for lack of a better word. It was almost like feeling invincible, though she knew that was far from the case. Looking over to Alyssia, she smiled slightly, nodding to let her friend know she was okay.

But then she looked over to the crumpled heap that was Terra, and the smile faded, a disappointed frown replacing it. Moving over to him, she knelt quickly and placed her hand on his chest. She was met with a rather steady heartbeat and the slight rising and falling of his chest. He was alive, that much was for sure. Nodding slightly, she could handle this now, closing her eyes she brought her hand to her heart and gathered light as she had been doing. Bringing it directly to the boy's chest, his burns began to fade, and he began to stir.

"Uh?"

Terra's eyes fluttered open ever so slightly, the pain he had been feeling even after he was knocked out numbing a little. He started to sit up, but fell back down, or so he thought. Shaking the blur from his eyes, he realized rather, that Lightning was holding him down. But not without reason, for the healing power she possessed was working on him slowly. Alleviating his burns and returning him to normal... though the pain still remained.

It looked like everyone was going to be okay. Lightning approved that she was all right and went to tend to the fallen Terra. Alyssia remained in her spot, keeping an eye on the mechanism before her as if it could release another explosion at any moment, but she knew that it wouldn't be likely. Alyssia felt something on her shoulder and she brushed it away, still stoicaly gazing at the machine. Then, she felt it again. That's when she realized it was tapping and figured it was one of the others. As she turned around, her eyes opened wide. The figure standing before her was a tall man wearing a lab coat that was at one point white, but was not smeared with dirt and mud...though she didn't know where it came from seeing as how there was no soil in the forest. His black pants were torn and ripped and the black-framed glasses he wore on his face had cracked lenses...so they were rather useless. The man looked like a vagabond, his face almost as dirty as his clothes. He had beady black eyes that showed delight in this instance, and his strange smile revealed a couple of missing teeth.

"Oh my. I see you turned it off," the man remarked, his voice slightly hurt. "May I ask why?"

Alyssia gave him a quizzical look as if he were crazy. "Why wouldn't we turn it off? It was hurting the souls that had to travel through these regions, not to mention messing with the minds of the treants," she explained. "If anything, we did this place a favor."

The man remained unresponsive as he walked past Alyssia and up to the machine, opening up the top expertly and removing the mana core within.

Lightning glared over in the direction of the man when she heard his voice, immediate distrust settling in. She stood, focusing in on him, but offering Terra her arm so he could pull himself to his feet. As soon as he did though, Lightning left her position, leaving Terra to stumble in an attempt to balance on his shaky legs. Without blinking even once, Lightning continued to stare the man down as she watched him.

"May I ask, who are you and what are you doing?"

The man held the orb up to the sky, twisting and turning it as he inspected it. That's when he realized he was being addressed. "Ah, my apologies. You damaged the body so badly...no no no, I can't use it anymore," the mysterious man explained, kicking the machine in front of him that used to be the main activation unit. "I have to salvage this special core in order to make a new one....now, what about...," he said and started looking around, taking note of the other fallen automaton.

"You're kidding right?" was all Alyssia said as he went around to each machine, salvaging small parts here and there.

"Hm? You didn't hold back on these things, tsk tsk. They were only doing their job, yes. Seems they failed at that." The man pocketed the small parts and took out a notepad, scribbling something furiously with a pencil before tucking both items away inside his lab coat. "Seems like all I can create are failures...."

"What a strange man..."

Terra tilted his head slightly as he watched the man go about his business, choosing to ignore his comrades. Picking up random pieces of the fallen automata and muttering about the damage done. But then something caught Terra's ear, something about failure. At this he raised an eyebrow for a moment, mumbling what he could remember of what the treant had said. His eyes widened.

Bang.

His eyes went straight to the source of the sound, which had come from none other than Lightning. Her gaze on the man had intensified since he finished speaking, but that didn't cause the sound. Rather, her gunblade, currently in gun form was aimed and ready, a bullet having dislodged some salvageable parts near the man's feet.

". . . Is he?"

"He's the one messing with the forest."

With that the gun returned to blade form, and Lightning was already poised for a fight. The energy the last fight had given her would certainly have its use now.

The man didn't seem to be too fazed by the bullet, but he did stop what he was doing and looked to the source. A look of despair seized his face, and he reached into his lab coat to pull out several needles, each with a really long thread attached to them. "I cannot have more time?! I promise....I can come up with something better!" he shouted desperately, turning his head to the sky and letting out a maniacal laugh. "Just...just give me more time. If I can't have it, then....," he paused and clutched his face with one of his hands. "No one can."

"Quit talking out your ass! You're only afraid because your time is UP!" Alyssia growled in response, conjuring her blade in an instant, and with the swiftest of motions brought Cerberus to her side in a quick mass of shadows which dissipated as quickly as they had come. The fight was on to save the Marble Forest.

Lightning was unfazed by the man's insanity, and was about to charge when Terra grabbed a hold of her for a second. Realizing that rushing in wouldn't be the best idea, she nodded at the younger soul and took many precautionary steps backwards. If this man wanted a fight, he would certainly get one, but the question remained as to whether or not he could break his focus on her.

Watching Lightning back herself into a corner, Terra looked back over to the man they were going to fight. It seemed he truly was insane, most likely from all of the 'failure'; Not that it mattered much anymore. All that mattered now was to get rid of him for hurting the forest. Then they could move on and get to wherever they had to go.

Alyssia didn't waste any time in taking to the air and flying straight towards the man. As she landed, she slashed him downwards with her sword, crouching low before springing up again for a spinning slash. "You don't know what you're getting yourself into, buddy. You messed up a lot of things here, and now you're going to pay. We'll teach you the true meaning of retribution," she snarled at the fellow, keeping her reflexes tense in case she needed to dodge. It was reckless of her to charge in not knowing what he was capable of, but it was her way of doing things. She'd just have to learn the hard way.

Closing in behind his master, Cerberus lumbered forward, all three mouths open. He could sense his master's will to have this soul put to permanent rest, and so he conjured three fireballs and let them fly free through the air, each flaming sphere curving inwards to strike the fellow. Wiping him off the face of Amoria would not even be enough justice.

Lightning quickly felt a shift in energy around herself, followed by an increase in adrenaline rush through her system. But she wasn't done with just that, it seemed her wish from the previous battle had come true, for she had enough energy to exert the same pinpointed mana. It would force the man to go after her instead of anyone else in the party. And of course, at the time it appeared he couldn't reach her.

Terra also rather hastily went to preparing for the man's first move, knowing it could very well be against him. At least, he felt that way until a surge of unfriendly mana passed over him, causing him to turn to the source. Like he had observed when the Diviner had battled the party, the unfriendly mana was coming from Lightning. And of course the man would have to go after her now, meaning he was safe for the time being.

He was being drawn towards Lightning because of that aura she emitted. She spared a worried glance at the woman, but by this point, Alyssia knew that she was much more adept at fighting and could handle herself. The rest would just have to put an end to the scientist as quickly as possible.

Taking a few steps, Cerberus's bulking mass turned slightly and released more fireballs from his mouths, each sphere aimed with deadly intent this time. The man wasn't too agile, so he hoped that each one would meet its mark. There was no room for mistakes this time.

Lightning bit her lip as the needle was suddenly flung at her only to be ripped from her skin. She had seen it coming, so she wondered why her reflexes had betrayed her. Nevertheless, there wasn't much she could do about it; There wasn't anything that she could do about it. So instead she took several steps forward, blade now in gun form. Twice she pulled the trigger.

"Deluded or not, I know what must come about," Constantine snapped back at Alyssia, dodging away from her to get closer to Lightning. "What does it matter, the order I kill you in, that is?" he asked aloud rhetorically, turning to face Lightning with a stupidly confident grin on his face. He held out his hand to one side and dark mana began to swarm around it as if he were charging an attack. In a few seconds, the ground beneath Lightning's feet trembled just a bit before a column of dark energy swarmed upwards to blast her.

Alyssia took to the air and landed quickly next to the scientist, slashing the air with her sword. A flashing glyph appeared behind her out of which blood spewed, trailing through the air and coating the entirety of her blade. "Yeah, I don't see you killing anyone. We're not going down easy. You, on the other hand, had best prepare for your return to the planet's mana cycle," she stated grimly, lashing out at the man in a sudden flurry of slashes, the cursed blood on her weapon forcing the blood out of the scientist...or was she just seeing the blood already on the blade? She was too angry to tell.

Cerberus didn't waste any time. He saw his opening and bounded forward, his teeth already set to gnashing and his claws flashing. The beast tore into Constantine without any regard to the man--he was one better obliterated into mana. Left as a sentient being, he would continue to do nothing but cause more trouble for himself and anyone who got in the way.

Lightning frowned for but a moment when the second bullet was just barely dodged by the delusional man. He seemed to have just the slightest bit of dexterity, which somehow saved him from a little more damage. It wasn't a problem though, her visage returned to normal soon afterwards and she was ready. Another raise of the gunblade, another two pulls of the trigger. Another two bullets sent flying at the man, hopefully this time both hitting their mark.

Once again Terra raised his sword into the air, a light shining down on it, enveloping it in a certain radiance. Why he kept doing so was unknown to both the party and the only enemy, but it seemed to make him stronger. Now he was ready and rearing to go. Racing over to the opposition, he readied to attack.

The scientist bent his body a few times, dodging two of Alyssia's blows, got chomped by Cerberus but ducked to avoid getting chomped again. He couldn't avoid the last head though. He felt a bullet graze him and dodged out of the way of a second one. Constantine growled and pushed past Alyssia and Cerberus in an attempt to gain some distance. He held his hand out in front of him with the palm up. A black glyph appeared and twirled, drawing in darkness mana from his body. He slammed his palm into the ground and Lightning was immediately surrounded by ghostly visions of dark spirits attempting to throw her off her game.

Alyssia snarled as her target dodged some of her attacks and had the nerve to push past her. "Damn, you have balls, I'll give you that," she shot at him before slashing the air with her blade, breaking one of seals of the gates. Four large bones shot up out of the ground around her and hovered a bit before flying closer to their commander, floating around her in an odd pattern. "We'll see how long that lasts," she stated simply before flying closer to the man to keep tabs on him. She couldn't let him get too far away from her.

Cerberus followed his master's idea, making sure to keep on the man at all times as a sort of pressure, though he seemed perfectly content with running away and bombarding Lightning with his strange dark magic of which some of it he recognized, seeing the spells much more efficiently executed in the depths of Hell. Regardless, Cerberus chomped down on the fellow. It would be best if he weren't doing anything at all.

Cerberus's maddened bites were easier to dodge, but the bullets were becoming more difficult. Constantine clutched his head as a bit of confusion overwhelmed him and he ran away. "Don't you know how to stay away from me?!" he yelled out frantically, his eyes wide in horror. Alyssia smirked seeing the needles coming right for her. She raised her arm in defense and hissed as the needles pierced them. Once they were out, Alyssia took to the air and flew high over Constantine's head, landing right behind him, the bones surrounding her following her every movement. "I'm afraid I don't," she stated bluntly before lashing out at the man with a couple of quick strikes, the bones piercing and pummeling the man as she did so. "Cerberus, go ahead and use the last one."

Lightning continued to say nothing more, feeling the effects of her previous mana wearing off. It seemed that the damage the man dealt would not be more evenly spread amongst them. While that wasn't the best situation for Terra, the other two could handle it fairly well. Taking several steps forward, she cocked the blade once more and fired two more bullets. "ENOUGH!!" Constantine shouted, throwing his arms out to each side of himself which seemed to elicit a reaction with the dark energy that began to form around him. Two columns of the purest dark energy rose upwards from beneath Alyssia and Terra, cursing them to the scientist's fullest capabilities. He was breathing heavily and looking around, readjusting his broken glasses to get a better view of his surroundings. He turned slightly and leapt backwards, unleashing his needle and threads at the same time, the weapons digging into Alyssia before the man ripped them out and wove them around to scratch at her a couple of more times before he finally came to a rest. "See? Your hypothesis is wrong! You cannot defeat me! Perhaps I'll be able to use your parts for something....fun." The scientist grinned evilly, though he still looked a bit tired.

"Damn, that's starting to hurt a bit," Alyssia growled and soared through the air after the man who kept attacking her with the damn needles. His magic didn't hurt her much, being of a dark nature, but she couldn't hold up against the assault of the man's weapon. She landed beside him and slashed downwards before turning and slashing him again, the three bones surrounding her piercing into the scientist once each after which another one crumbled to dust. Through her sheer strength, she recovered some stamina, but it was definitely less than what she had gained before.

He spread out his hands again causing two columns of dark energy to envelop Alyssia and Lightning, however, the winged one was able to dodge out of the way at the last second whilst the earthbound one was subject to the full cursing effect of his dark magic. Looking around, he found his avenue of escape and skidded to a halt beside the young boy. The scientist appeared to do nothing at first, just staring at the boy as if he were curious before lacing his needles between his fingers and delivering two quick jabs to the kid.

Just narrowly avoiding the scientist's magic, she gazed past the column of dark energy meant for her to see the scientist running away again, with Terra getting hurt in the process at that. Anger coursing through her body, Alyssia surged through the air and landed harshly upon the ground next to the scientist eliciting a slight shockwave. "Hey, maybe you're the one that's hard of learning," Alyssia spoke, trying to sound as if she still had her cool. She sliced at the man twice while the last remaining bones pierced into him like an animal biting its prey. "I'm the true threat here. Systematically, you should get rid of me first...or are you not the big, logical scientist you claim to be?" Alyssia taunted, her calm naturally returning to her. It wasn't true. Lightning staggered as the strange man's magic had the same effect on her as it had on Terra. Unwilling to risk something flashy or only slightly helpful, Lightning quickly lifted her blade once more and fired off two bullets. It wasn't much, but it was something, and that was all that mattered. With that said and done, she began to move away from the action knowing she wouldn't last much longer if attacked.

Though it was futile to escape the man's reach, the boy did know one thing. Constantine exclaimed madly, thrusting both arms into the air causing two columns of dark energy to form around Alyssia and Cerberus, blasting upwards from the ground in a quick pulse before a second set of columns enveloped the two, though the first column had missed Cerberus by a wide margin, most likely due to the immense amount of concentration it took to cast the spells in quick succession on multiple targets.

Breathing heavily, Constantine ran away from his most recent targets like a wild animal, pausing at the periphery of the clearing. He brandished his needles and thread, a deadly glint in his eyes. "The time has come....MY EXPERIMENTS NEED ME!!!! HRAH!" he shouted, tossing his needles at a curved angle outwards. The threads seemed to gleam with an ethereal light as the surrounding area grew dark. They pierced through Alyssia and Cerberus, swiveling around to nail Lightning, then Terra, and the circle was completed as they pierced Alyssia once again, but they kept going around and around, piercing the group over and over and over again before Constantine finally yanked back his weapons leaving nothing but devastation in their wake.

"What the hell?!" Alyssia cursed as she cringed in pain from the scientist's deadly attack. "Damn it...Lightning!" she called out suddenly, remembering that the soldier hadn't been in the best condition. She turned to see the woman out cold for the time being. Alyssia's hands clenched into fists. "I'm going to make this bastard pay for making enemies out of us," Alyssia growled as she zoomed through the air, landing next to the scientist. She had been cursed by the man's dark magic and scolded herself for being so careless, but now wasn't the time. He was obviously on the brink of death. They just had to persist. She slashed at him a couple of times while her final bone dug into his stomach, crumbling to dust as it completed the attack.

Cerberus kept this in mind as he set about taking chunks out of the scientists flesh, sinking his fangs with pleasure into his body.

Terra wasn't in the best shape, but he cared little for his peril; His focus was on their fallen ally who had attempted to avoid the action. How could she have fallen? Out of them all, she seemed to most used to the tide of battle. It had to just be luck on the man's side, there was no way she would have fallen otherwise. Forcing himself to look away from the crumpled companion, Terra turned back in the direction of the man. While he wasn't close enough to do much, he could pull off a little magic.

"Tainted soul, let the light in! Take unto thee my healing ways and be cleansed!"

With saber drawn, the Actor spun around rather gracefully blade glowing slightly. Once turned full circle, Terra stepped in direction of the man and pulled the sword back. In another movement, he stabbed the blade forward and the glowing flashed brilliantly. A surge of water, just as fast as the light shot forward and targeted the man. Instantly, it pushed him back into the trees behind him, forcing him to draw even more blood. With the attack finished, Terra stepped away and over to the fallen Lightning.

She surged next to him in a flash, dealing two adept blows with such strength that she swore she sliced through the man's bones. "Cerberus, finish off this sorry sack of shit...," she uttered, feeling her mana becoming distressed, for she really wanted to get over to Lightning and Terra to tend to their wounds. Suddenly, this...this monster of a soul was not worth the time anymore. It was her allies that needed treatment and soon.
