Salem starts at H4.

At the sight of the slimes, Salem quickly retrieved his claws and put them on, handing over the bag to Nella and entering a battle stance. The bag would definitely weigh him down, and his combat style was reliant on speed, so he was glad Nella would watch it for now. "You know I'm always careful, so no worries," Salem replied confidently and smirked. "So, more have come to challenge the Scourge of the Slimes?" He mocked the pitiful creatures with a theatrical laugh. The metal of his claws gleamed ever so slightly in the morning light. He was prepared to get a little down and dirty.

As always, Nella started out with linking her mana with Salem's, to ensure he would have no shortage when utilizing his skills. She tried to stifle a smile as Salem taunted their new slime foes, shifting their bag so it lay behind her feet. For a brief moment, she worried about it, seeing as how carrying it around was clearly beginning to hinder them. Then, Nella shook her head and refocused on the fight.

"At least there's only two," she murmured, a little relieved.

Salem moves to E5.

Eager to get these things out of the way, Salem used his great agility to dash up to the nearest one--a red slime. It reminded him somewhat of a living pile of ketchup which nearly made him laugh, but he remained calm. He didn't think much of the slimes, but all it took was one overconfident slip-up and things could go from good to bad in a heartbeat. "If you insist on getting in our way," he stated simply, taking a deep breath before lunging into the slime with great ferocity, dealing two deft slashes to the thing with his claws. When he retracted them, he noticed they were already covered in goop. Definitely going to need another cleaning, he thought as he prepared for a counterattack.

Nella was surprised by how easily Salem cleaved through the red slime. She had thought they would be stronger than this. Feeling reassured, but still a little apprehensive, Nella took several steps closer so as to have a clearer look at the battlefield. It seemed she wouldn't have to worry about Salem getting hurt too much this time around.

[Nella] moves to [G-4].

Strange, Nella thought as she squinted at the slimes. She could understand the red slime being injured since Salem attacked it but why did the blue slime also seem to be hurt? Did it have a fight before them. Confused and a little bit curious, the girl lifted her head to look past the monsters into the distance. Was there something else up ahead they had to worry about?

The flames were rather hot and unpleasant, but Salem exhibited surprising resilience and merely shrugged them off. He tapped a foot against the ground as he noticed his target moving away from him. "That all you got?" he asked rhetorically before rushing in for another attack on the red slime. He raised his claws into the air and brought them down ferociously with extra power upon his victim. A growl nearly escaped his mouth, but he choked on it and kept quiet, watching slime splatter the nearby grass like blood. It was the closest thing he would get to seeing the results of his efforts.

Salem uses Tiger Fury on Red! 2 hits! 12 Dmg per hit! (ATK)

MP: 10/20

Salem straightened himself up. These particular slimes were rather lackluster. He was definitely expecting more from them, but in the end, he decided not to take it for granted. We're lucky we can handle them so well. I just hope it keeps up for both our sakes, he thought as he prepared to launch his next attack while staying on guard for the hits he was sure to receive.

Nella's eyes widened in panic as Salem was set on fire. This was not good. Not good at all. Wasting no time, she concentrated on their link and carefully sent a wave of healing mana through it toward her friend. It wouldn't get rid of the burn but it would at least heal his wounds and provide some relief. Though it was all she could do at the moment, she was grateful she could actually do something.

"Are you okay, Salem?" she cried, her concern clear in her voice. Worry marred her face as she clutched onto Salem's gift to her.

Ooooooh. So THAT'S what they could do. Salem let out a sharp yelp like a wounded animal as he found himself going up in flames. He dropped to the ground quickly and rolled around to put the fire out before standing up, but it was hopeless. His skin was still fairly burned from the hot fire and it would most likely stay that way for at least a little while longer. Every movement he made caused him some pain but he tried to shrug it off for now. Even with the injury, he still had the upper hand on the slime, not to mention Nella was steadily taking care of his wounds. "I'm doing just fine, Nella. Thanks for keeping me healthy over here. I wasn't expecting them to try and deep fry me," he called back to his friend before turning his attention on the red slime. It was already nearing its demise, and so he sought to bring it about as soon as possible. Though possessing quite the capabilities, the blue one would have to wait.

Salem rushed the slime easily with his great agility and slashed into it ferociously, once with each claw, harnessing the power of the beast to bolster the strength of his blows. Being up close and personal also served to boost his assault as well, for melee fighting was his specialty. Keeping his stance light and ready to move at the drop of a hat, Salem smirked, finding the pain a bit easier to ignore now that he was constantly in action. "You're going to have to better than that to take down the Scourge of the Slimes, you know," he stated matter-of-factly.

They were lucky the red slime was almost done for. Maybe it would have been better if she had tried harder to also attack the slime. Nella quickly shook her head. If she did, it was more than likely the slimes would come after her instead and she wasn't as resilient as Salem. Salem would never forgive himself if she fell.

"Pointless," the boy growled as he lunged back to his original spot, embedding his sharp clawed gloves into the red slime, effectively ending it from causing him any harm. He took a deep breath and tried to calm himself, his mind trying desperately to avoid stressing the pain, though Nella was doing a great job at trying to alleviate it. Once the blue slime was gone, he could have his wounds treated for good before they continued along. It served as an even greater motivation to get rid of the last slime on hand. "So let's do this then," Salem said confidently with a smirk, his somewhat feral gaze shifting towards the lone blue slime.

Watching the red slime collapse into a puddle of goo, Nella grinned. That was one down and one more to go and by the looks of it, Salem would have no problems taking care of this little nuisance. She began to relax but then shook herself and tensed her shoulders once more. The battle wasn't over just yet. She still needed to make sure Salem was healed. Injuries like what he had at the moment looked painful to deal with. With a flicker of a thought, Nella sent another batch of healing at her friend. She was starting to get the hang of this.

Blown back and then left behind as the slime sought to gain distance. But it was hopeless. Salem growled and crouched down to the ground just a bit before springing across the path with tremendous speed. He stopped short just in front of the slime and stood, eyes glowing slightly which accentuated the crimson color, glowering down at his victim. His prey. Thoughts....I have to keep thinking... Smirking wildly, he crashed a clawed glove with great force into the spellcasting slime, following it up with a huge horizontal swipe with his other, backing off just a bit to catch his breath and get his thoughts in order. Composure somewhat regained, he stood tall and proud.

"See? It is futile to try and ward off the Scourge of the Slimes, foolish creature," he spoke mockingly at the slime. He could understand the tactics it imposed, trying to keep range so its horrible defenses wouldn't be exploited. Salem was actually surprised it was so smart. Then again, it was a wild creature that acted on instinct primarily and probably had a bit of experience trying to defend itself in the wild. He wondered if it were really okay to be so condescending towards it, but then remembered that the little shit had set him on fire.

Though another hit from Salem would do the trick, Nella supposed it wouldn't hurt to heal him up a little more, just in case. She was a little nervous at seeing so much damage being done to her friend. It frightened her to imagine how much pain the male was in. However, by the look on his face, Nella doubted he even felt the pain. He seemed to be enjoying the fight. Then again, she could understand. Bashing on monsters that were trying to kill you was quite satisfying in retrospect.

"Try not to get carried away, Salem!" she called, mentally tugging on their link.

"S-sorry about that, Nella," the boy called back to his friend. "I just wanted to make sure we finished this up as quickly as possible." Regardless of the reason, he knew he had really taken a lot from Nella's reservoir of mana in that single instant. To be drained of so much so quickly couldn't have been a good feeling. Giving in to his inner power wouldn't only affect him, but Nella as well. He had to keep that in mind. He wondered if she noticed the change at all, or if she just played it off as something normal for fighters. Hopefully the latter....I don't want her to know about this..., he thought to himself grimly as he set about finishing off the blue slime before him. One powerful blow, followed by another was enough to end it. He stretched for a moment before turning around and giving Nella a slight wave.

"See? Looks like it's all over now. I apologize again for my recklessness," he said to her sheepishly. Yes. That's all it was. Recklessness.

Hearing her friend apologize, Nella was quick to flash him a reassuring smile. But the smile went unseen as Salem turned back to defeating the last of the pair of slimes. Through their link, however, she felt something akin to unease from his side. It almost caused her to frown but she shook her head and cautiously checked their surroundings once more before rushing over to the male. The slime was dead by this point and she grasped hold of his arm.

"Here, hold still," she said, voice firm as she tugged him to face her. Pressing a hand against his chest, she closed her eyes and allowed her mana to guide her, flowing into Salem's inner being. Nella knew it was a split second decision but she had wanted to try it for a long time. Her mana poured into every part of his body and Nella relished in the feeling of his warmth. She did not, however, forget what she was trying to do and gently pushed her mana to heal the more serious of his injuries. Moments passed before Nella removed her hand and, in the process, the link as well.

"You know Salem," she began, blue eyes lowered to the ground. "We've known each other for a long time. I know you." Her eyes lifted and she smiled brightly, warmth and love clear in her eyes. "I trust you. So don't worry. You're my best friend." Nella took a step back. "And I hope we'll always be together."

Taking solace in the fact that the slimes would no longer be able to cause them or anyone else any harm, Salem sighed, feeling Nella's tug. He turned voluntarily and closed his eyes as she placed a hand on his chest. The wounds he had sustained began to fade substantially as she managed to heal him. Even his charred skin from the slime's fiery magic seemed to work itself into something akin to new. It would probably need to heal up a bit on its own before being back to its normal look, but it certainly didn't hurt anymore thanks to her. Feeling a lot better, he was suddenly taken aback by her words, just because they were so unexpected. Did she feel like he was pulling away from her? Because that was definitely not the case.

"I know that, Nella," the boy replied, trying not to seem as surprised as he actually was. "We'll definitely always be together. I can't think of anything that could tear us apart," he assured her, giving her a soft smile, thinking about her words a bit more in-depth. It hit him that she might have noticed that something was wrong after all. He knew he could trust her, but telling her wouldn't do her any good. "I'm glad you trust me because I trust you, too. If ever there were something I really needed to tell you, I'd do it, and I'd choose the right time to do so," he stated calmly, choosing his words such that he could let her know that everything was all right while avoiding having to address the problem itself. It wasn't even a problem. He had everything under control. That was the main reason there was no point.

I am in control. I am in control, he repeated to himself in his mind over and over. He had never had such outbreaks while training, but in real fights, he needed to call upon that...extra strength...to get the job done. He wasn't having any problems holding it back; he just had to be a bit more careful from now on.

His words reassured her. However, Nella could also hear the words that weren't sad. Though she was just a little disappointed that he didn't want to talk about it, she did have hope he would someday. After all, they were best friends. They would always be together. Smile widening, she nodded enthusiastically before bending down and carefully picking her way through the remains of the slimes.

"I'll always be right here, Salem," she hummed a light tone, only wishing to remind him of her support. "Anyway, we better hurry. Oh, I found a red jelly block." Nella beamed, lifting the block up a little so her friend could see. She then picked up a small ball of goo. "I wonder what we can do with this though?" Sticking them both in her bag, she stood and brushed herself off. "Alright then, let's go?"

"If that's all there is to get, I think we should be on our way," Salem affirmed that he was ready to move on. The sooner they reached Rubidel, the better off they would be, not to mention the excitement was quite the force to be contained. There was no doubt that he was ready to see the city for himself, and now it was a straight shot, as long as no other monsters got in the way. So far, the slimes seemed pretty persistent in their attempts to stop them, but nothing could halt their progress now. Salem was too motivated to turn back now and give up, and he knew that Nella would feel the same way. As such, he would let that driving force give him the power he needed to protect them both as they made their way closer and closer to the city.

"Great!" Nella chirped happily and, with a smile, lightly grasped Salem's hand and cheerily pulled him along. The two then continued their trek down the dirt path, as if they had never been interrupted by attacking slimes or other such nuisances. Within minutes, the walls of Rubidel could be seen and the sight of it caused Nella's eyes to brighten with excitement and glee. Her heart pounded in her chest and she almost stumbled while trying to keep herself from breaking out into a run.

Swallowing hard, she sent a glance at Salem, just to see if he was excited as she was. If nothing were to appear in their way, they would arrive within minutes! Her mouth twitched and, no longer able to contain it, Nella laughed. Softly at first and then a little louder. And, just like that, she could no longer stop herself. Releasing Salem's hand, she ran forward, arms spread out from her sides and she laughed.

"Look, Salem, look!" the brunette cried, pointing at the gleaming white walls of Rubidel. "This is it! We're almost there! It's right before our eyes. The true beginning of our adventure starts there!" Nella smiled widely, looking as if she had just found the greatest treasure in the world. "At Rubidel!"

So caught up in her excitement, Nella took no notice of the dirt ground rising to wrap around her ankles nor the rising leaves behind her nor did she notice their sharpened ends pointing at her. There was a snap and, blinking at the sound, Nella turned just in time to see the leaves launch themselves toward her. She jerked back on reflex but the dirt had solidified.

She couldn't move.

There wasn't time to think. None. Salem's pupils dilated to slits and the crimson color glowed eerily. He started growling to himself and in a fraction of a single second, he vanished, reappearing between Nella and the barrage of sharp leaves headed right for her. The air itself seemed to cry out in pain as Salem expertly slashed at the torrent of leaves, shredding each and every one of them to pieces with incredible, almost inhuman precision. He stood there near Nella, panting, as the rain of torn leaves fell gently to the ground. But he knew it wasn't over by a long shot. Someone or something had set out to attack them, so there was no time to let his guard down. No time to think.

Crouching down, he dug Nella free of the solidified ground carelessly. It was a miracle that he managed not to scratch her with his claws. Tear. Rip. Bleed. Shred. Break. Simple, short words flashed through his head in the form of thoughts. Mangle the one who nearly killed her...killed her. Kill. Kill. Kill. Salem remained crouched on the ground, sniffing the dirt before raising his head to sniff the air as well, hoping to catch some trace of what had attacked them. The more time spent trying to search it out, the more he was brought at least a little to his senses.

"SH....SHOW YOURSELF!!" he half-yelled, half-growled, his voice surprisingly authoritative given his rather agile form. He was just a teenage boy after all. Such a tone wouldn't be expected to come out of someone like him. His mom probably would have had a heart attack. He growled to himself some more, trying to remember something--to make sense of something. There was a nagging sensation in the back of his mind trying to remind him of something he just couldn't grasp. Whatever was out there, he hoped it appeared or else he'd tear the whole place apart until he found it.

Nella was terrified.

Her breaths coming out in quick, heavy pants, as if hyperventilating, she shakily reached out and grabbed at the back of Salem's shirt. Though she failed several times, she was able to grasp hold on her fourth attempt and drew comfort from the presence of her friend. Her free hand clutched to her rapidly beating heart, Nella let her legs collapse beneath her and slowly slid to the ground.

She had been about to die. The leaves, they had been aiming straight for her. She hadn't been able to move, her legs had been chained to the ground, if Salem hadn't, hadn't-

She had been about to die.

The revelation made her want to cry, to sob, to scream in terror but her breath can't in her throat and she couldn't breathe. Choking, Nella pressed her lips together and whimpered. She had never-never been the target of such an intent. If those leaves had hit, she would have died. There were no ifs, whats or buts about it.

"Salem. . . ." she whispered, wanting nothing more than to be wrapped in his arms and feel the warmth of his body.

Apparently, whatever had attacked them wasn't listening which caused Salem to fume until he heard his...his what? What was it that Nella had said? A single word. Your name...your HUMAN name, the thoughts scolded fiercely with a brazen intensity that caused the boy's form to cower slightly. She's all right now. Salem felt his heartbeat become less erratic, though it still beat fast. He had to stay aware seeing as how their attacker hadn't revealed itself yet. However, he felt rationality hit him like a ton of bricks. Yelling at something that was unseen to reveal itself was pretty stupid. He and Nella were at the mercy of whatever was attacking them, but he swore to himself that he would protect her as long as it decided to be a coward instead of facing them directly. He took in a deep breath and turned to face Nella who had fallen to her knees, unable to stand after such a terrifying experience. He knelt down to her level, his eyes no longer glowing and his pupils returned to normal.

"Nella, Nella, it's all right. Calm down," Salem spoke to her as gently as he could, handling his words with care as if they were glass and could shatter at any moment causing a clamor that would shake Nella into an even more frightened state. "Listen to me. I know that was a close run-in, but we've been tangling with death ever since we set out. Those slimes could have killed us if we weren't strong enough, but we kept that in the back of our minds. It didn't seem like a real possibility, but it was. This is reality." His tone was a lot more firm now. "But we have each other. I won't let you fall so easily. You know that. You said you trusted me..." his voice trailed off. He had just saved her life, after all, granted it came at a very dangerous price. He had almost lost himself. Even now, he could feel slight twinges coming from deep within, but for now, he ignored them. There was still the matter of their attacker on hand, and he had to get Nella back to seeing reason so that they could defend themselves.

It looked like it was safe now. Creamy white eyes with no pupils peeked out from behind a nearby tree, the own of said eyes shivering. That had been scary. She hadn't expected the boy to suddenly go crazy. She was only trying to have a little fun. Maybe see a knight rescue a damsel in distress situation. Those were always adorable. Feeling her mind wander, she furiously shook her head. No! She hadn't known they were rookies!

Meanwhile, Nella felt herself calming at Salem's soothing words. She knew he was right but that was the closest instance of death she had ever come across. A sharp pain suddenly streaked through her mind and she grimaced. No. . . No, it wasn't. There had been one other time but she didn't want to remember! Shaking her head, she raised her head and gave her friend a reassuring smile.

"Thank you Salem," Nella whispered softly, ocean blue eyes shining with unshed tears. "I don't know what I would do without you." And it was the truth. Her Grandpa had once told her it had been Salem who had brought her back up when she had fallen down. She smiled. But then she jerked her head up and snapped her gaze over to one of the tree by the path. "You're the one who attacked me."

Oh no! She was caught! With no other choice, the attacker revealed herself. Nella blinked, unsure as to whether or not she was seeing this correctly. It was a fairy.

"Look, it wasn't my fault!" the fairy blurted out suddenly, wings flapping furiously behind her. Her cheeks were red, contrasting with the rest of her pale skin. At first, Nella thought she was naked but then realized she wasn't. There seemed to be a layer of cloth over the fairy's body but it blended in with her skin. "I didn't KNOW you guys were rookies! You should have said something! And besides, who's stupid enough to just waltz down the path thinking it was safe? HEL-LO! There are monsters? You should be more alert!" The fairy thrust a finger at them. "This is all your fault!"

Nella stared, her mouth partially opened. "What?"

"You heard me!"

No, no Salem. You're not going to lose it again. You're normal. That didn't happen. It was just a sudden burst of adrenaline. That's all it was. I needed adrenaline to save Nella, the boy thought calmly as he stood up and faced the fairy who had nearly put an end to his best friend. He suppressed a growl, but his eyes would deign to hide the hatred he felt for her, sheer and powerful. The gaze itself was enough to set the nearby trees alight with flame should he have possessed the power. A passing breeze tousled his hair and caused his cloak to waver. There was no doubt in his mind, even though he had regained his own senses, that he wanted to tear this thing limb from limb. And so he voiced his opinion on the matter.

"Not good enough. Give me a better reason I shouldn't rip you apart right now," Salem said, his voice deathly calm. The crimson glare said it all. "It's our fault it, is it? It's OUR fault?!" he continued, his voice escalating. He clutched his head with one hand. He could feel a tremendous pain within. Could he manage to hold it back? "YOU were the one just 'playing around', apparently. Toying with people's lives? Is that how you get your damn kicks?!" The boy became deathly silent again, his whole body trembling. He bent his head down, but when he looked back up at the fairy, his eyes were glowing again, the pupils naught but slits.

Slash. Gnash. Bite. Claw. Destroy.

"I want to see you bleed," Salem growled. "I want to see you afraid...as afraid as you made NELLA!!" he shouted, his voice causing the very trees to shake. Blood. Guts. Gore. Splatter. Taste. He licked his lips hungrily, refraining from turning to face Nella. Even if he had lost control again, somewhere in his subconscious lie the will to hide what had become of him.

"You-!" the fairy glared at the boy but upon seeing his frightening visage, she swallowed the rest of her words and jerked backwards. Nella felt her mouth dry, staring at the back of her friend with something akin to lost in her eyes. She didn't know what to do. She couldn't remember ever seeing him like this before.

"S-S-Salem . . . ?" she called out hesitantly, reaching out a hand to touch his shoulder. She paused just centimeters away, her hand hovering. Nella felt her friend was too unstable at this point for her to try and calm him down but she had to do something. Biting her lip, she opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted.

The fairy had regained herself and instead of cowering, glared furiously at the boy. "Let's see you try!" she spat, her magic sparking around her being. With that said, the fairy zipped back into the woods, leaving Nella and Salem to follow.

Episode 1e: Obstruction

Tip: Best to stay close to her, don't worry about mana, take her down! If she Hides in one of the Trees, you'll have to destroy the tree before you can hit her! Though, you might not want to destroy too many. . . .
